  1. These things are important no matter what size the boat. The center of gravity needs to be placed to float the boat on the waterline and has nothing to do with the center of effort. The center on effort need to be aligned with the center of below water area so you do not have to compensate with the rudder. These do not always line up nicely and is why you frequently see the bulb extending out in front of the dagger keel and sometimes trailing the keel. Bob
  2. Thanks, Nils, I'm having fun with it. Sorry Mark, The only drawings are of the original build before it was converted to a cable laying boat. Bob
  3. Your idea of an open water diorama would be great. With the skills you've shown us, I'm sure you can do it. Bob
  4. John, thanks for the encouraging words. Steamschooner, that’s what makes this hobby both fun and interesting. Popeye, I don’t know. Here’s another view. From the size of the men on deck It could be 18 – 24”. But then do the rub rails and bulwarks move out to match that distance? It’s hard to tell. Yes Patrick, I just hope the model is as good looking as the pictures. Tom, I agree. I’d be squinting too. As it is she measures about 20” long, a good size for me. OK. More research. Why do they have to alter boats? I forgot the boat I am building is the boat pictured in the first entry of this thread. That was before the hull was modified. I’m sure glad I didn’t already make that change. But I still think it was an interesting modification and wonder why. Bob
  5. Ah research. We do research before we start building and then do more research as we build. That’s when we discover things that make us change part of our build that we have already done. Hopefully we don’t have to start over. In this case all I have to do is remove the aluminum tape with the rivets. It turns out the rivets used on the Pequot, except for the rivets in the stem post, are flat head rivets and smooth on the outside. Also in post #99 you can see a plate added to the hull. It turns out the hull was enlarged in that area on both sides. I was not able to find a reason. Anyway now I have to add a box to both sides of the hull all because of research. On the other hand, if we did not do the research our models would not be correct. Other than that I put together the basics of the cabins and placed them in position. Bob
  6. A warming house on the deck of a boat. Is this what you call a Houseboat? Bob
  7. Denis, You wont fine Future in the stores. I think Pledge bought out Future years ago but modelers still refer to it as Future. The ten year old bottle of Pledge I have says, "Pledge with Future shine. Premium floor finish. Long lasting shine tough acrylic protection." The back label says it is a tough acrylic finish that contains no wax. I use it both as a sanding sealer and as a finish protector. Bob
  8. Michael, I don't carve for the same reason you gave, I like my thumbs. But the carving you did, using only a #11, shows what a skilled craftsman you are. Thanks for the info on bending the wood. Bob
  9. Michael, is the heat gun sufficient for all bending or will you still need the steam box? Bob
  10. Fantastic. She's almost ready to sail away and win the next race. Bob
  11. What a beauty. You should loads of fun sailing her. We used to put Vaseline around the combing to keep the water from going up under the cover. You may also need some way to hold the cover down. Bob
  12. What a lovely barge. Sorry I'm late but it looks like I got here just in time for the exciting part, the planking. Bob
  13. For some reason My windows media player will not play them. Bob
  14. What program do I need to see you're movies. I use windows 7. Bob
  15. Looking good, Igor. You didn't loose your touch in those three months. Welcome back. Bob
  16. I said it before and I'll say it again. "You know that what you are doing is impossible." But it looks fantastic. Bob
  17. Pete, do you have experience with Titebond 3 as the only sealant or are you also using epoxy? Bob
  18. Be carful with wet sanding. Too much water will re-soften Elmer's wood filler. Bob
