Beautiful work, Patrick. I have great respect for your skill and execution on this and your other similar models. Amazin,g tiny scale work. Congratulations! I'll be on board watching your next little 'Faberge' sail boat. Cheers, Elia

Patrick, Boy she sure looks great with those sails. She is such a little gem of a model. Beautiful. Cheers Elia

Dimitris, Very nice work on the stern rudder housing - your typical high build standards! I had wondered what the little white 'box' objects were and where they went... Are they storage lockers? I also wonder what those little 'deck extensions' are to which you've installed hand rails and stanchions (all brass). Very nice work there. Cheers, Elia

Gary, I've been following along, watching your build and have been somewhat perplexed by the directions for the seine boat. With the apparent amount of keel depth protruding beyond the formers I find it difficult to imagine wrapping a 'frame' strip all the way over the former, from one side to another without a kink in the 'frame' strip occuring. If the keel were sanded down to the level of the formers then I might see that working....but then the notch in the keel at each former would apparently be very thin. I went to look at the build log of a former DDM and MSW 1.0 member, Jim Lefever, over at shipmodeling.net, where he has both a build log of his Benjamin Latham and his seine boat (in which he apparently didn't follow the MS directions). Here is a link to his seine boat log. It might give you some ideas on how you approach its build. http://shipmodeling.net/photopost/showgallery.php?cat=984&ppuser=2811 Cheers, Elia

Dimitris, Very nice work on the stem and stern detailing. I haven't yet worked with photo etched brass so I don't know how it difficult it is to work; I suspect it can be challenging. You've done a very neat and clean job of it. Is your plan to leave those brass details 'bright' or paint them? Cheers, Elia

John, Beautiful work. That hull planking and tree nailing is very sharp. Interesting method in addressing the aftmost rail and transom (or at least where the transom would be!). Cheers, Elia

Hank, Outstanding. The level of detail and how you've integrated all of the tiny pieces (photo etch?) is eye catching. That antenna mast is something else. I live just west of Philadelphia, drive I-95 into the city, and see the New Jersery across the Delaware river (on the NJ side) often - and she has nothing over your ship. Very sharp! Cheers, Elia

Has anyone got or used headband magnifiers?
Elia replied to vossy's topic in Modeling tools and Workshop Equipment
I'm another user of Optivisor and highly recommend it. It provides me with clear, magnified vision of my model(s) which my 52 year old eyes can't any longer. I have two different magnification lense sets, and use each according to the task at hand. The glass lenses are quite clear and distortion free. I also have the optional LED light. I find it can slide around on the headband a bit, and the battery contacts within the battery carrier aren't robust, so at times electrical contact is broken and the LED fails to light. But it is useful (when working). Overall I highly recommend Optivisor. Cheers, Elia -
John, Beautiful planking. I love how the strakes flow to the counter and are perfectly symmetric, endinging in those 'V's. Super nice. Cheers, Elia

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
