With the lower Fore ratlines completed, I finished mounting the spritsail topmast flag, the lower line is secured at the trestletree and the top line with a knot simulating the toggle is led down to the top. Now I'll focus my attention on the main topsail and lower course yards. Thanks for looking.

    Brief review:

21 November 1805: Nelson falls in an encounter with the French, famously off Trafalgar

21 November 2018: Nelson falls again at an encounter with the French, this time at Rochefort, falling into the hands of an unknown man who pressed him to an unknown destination. Here is the last picture just before the loss.

But first things first. This was the last stand of the too small steering wheel planking http://www.shipmodels.info/mws_forum/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif

In the meantime, a larger piece of planking had already been built. Also more deck beams were already in place. But the beam to which the steering tackle is attached was pressed down a bit by the planks and the tackle became slack as a result. So once again entering deep into the guts ...

... and fixed the tackle so that I could be tightend after gluing the planking into place.

I even shortened a brush to be able to put the paint in the right place http://www.shipmodels.info/mws_forum/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif
The stub is there as the tackle doesn't run parallel due to the rudder drum.

And now it's time to be strong. It was the turn of Nelson and Hardy's new build. Nelson is a cross-dresser, as you can see. Surgically altered a bit, as they say.

The other guys have also arrived, the lieutenant with his speaking trumpet and the two helmsmen, dressed a little more formally than the rest of the crew. As we have very calm seas right now there are only 2 present.

And then they were already allowed onto their playfield.

And this time he came to stay, brave little Horatio!

BLACK VIKING reacted to Louie da fly in The San Marco mosaic ship c. 1150 by Louie da fly - 1:75
A-a-a-and - the hull is off the jig. I ended up having to pull the jig apart to get the ship out, but worth it. Then I had to do some correction. The pegs are gluing into the correct position some frames that were angled incorrectly (not perpendicular to the keel).

Then onto making stringers to make the structure more rigid, and deck beams. Here's my poor man's plank bender (a cheap soldering iron) to get them the right shape.

And here are the first bits of deck beam - or are they stringers? I've sort of lost track. (one of them is to be cut up to provide pieces of stringer for the bow or stern, which explains the complex curve).

Gluing complete - here she is without the pegs.

Adding stringers at the turn of the bilge. There'll be corresponding wales on the outside of the hull, and there'll be strengthening stringers and wales where the second and third futtocks join, and a wale in line with the clamp.

The mosaics seem to show a reasonable number of wales, as do the near-contemporary picture from the History of Genoa and the carvings on the Leaning Tower of Pisa.

    View from the bow.

I'd miscalculated the length of the clamps, so they didn't quite reach the breast hooks. Because they didn't meet the rigidity of the hull was lessened, so I glued bits of wood into the gaps to make each assembly effectively a single strong unit.

Smoothing off the pieces that fill the gaps.

Still some tidying up and smoothing off to do. They won't be visible under the deck, but I'll know if I don't do it right.

And the stringers lined up with the join in the futtocks. They will be curved to follow the line of the join.

    Like this . . .

    And that's it for today . . .

I finished rigging the Fore course portside bowline, sail clew, clew line, sheet block, tack , buntlines and about 1/3 of the ratlines, these I just eyeball the spacing, I do however slide some white paper behind the shrouds as I near the futtock shrouds to avoid securing the upper lines that run close to the inside of the shrouds. As always, I appreciate the complements and likes.

A quick footnote to Nisha's log.

I'm currently on holiday in Devon, UK, and had arranged to return Nisha to her real home....so to speak.

Whilst here, I've met with Mitch Tonks who is the CEO of the Rockfish chain of seafood restaurants. Our meet was in Brixham, so before lunch, I handed over Nisha to him and he was delighted with it. She's now on display in the restaurant, behind the bar area, for visitors to see. Mitch gave me a signed copy of his 6th cookbook and a rather nice pack of locally caught and tinned specialities.

    What a lovely bloke!

I wish everyone a nice weekend.
It's time I send Le Rochefort on summer break, now it's on to La Palme. In the last few days I have made some preparations and measurements, different heights have been marked. In the following step the cannon ports and the whales were marked, for the whales I use black hornbeam which I ordered from Vahur in Estonia (visit the hobbymill.eu website if interested). I soaked the first two boards of the whales and put them in position to dry with clamps. The window in the rear was opened and the cross members inserted as this has to be done before attaching the whales as the window is almost flush with them. I'll keep you posted and wish you a nice weekend.

No plans to re design Flirt, as I am happy with the kit. The only reason I felt I had to do Speedy is because the kit had changed a lot since 2019, so a complete re doing of the PE sheets was absolutely necessary. At the same time, I removed all 'legacy' parts and updated a load of others.  It now has laser cut pear grating, ladders and a binnacle as standard, rather than optional extras - plus of course the new laser cut and engraved outer and inner bulwarks, plus wale and spirketting.

I believe both Alert and Flirt are a perfect balance between more 'old school' and newer kits.

You do not have to copper Speedy, and can paint her exactly as Flirt if you so wish.

Something of a milestone here.  I haven't finished the project yet, but I have finished all of the work on the ship itself (except for adjusting the davits).  What remains is building the four small boats.  I started this ship in June, 2021 -- so at 2 years one month (and not yet quite finished) this is my longest build.

Pictures below show the stern and main mast lanterns.

I also got the ship off of the temporary cradle and onto brass mounting columns.  But it's a really HEAVY ship, and had too much lateral sway, so I added two small wood columns under the hull and now it's solid as a rock.  A couple of pictures below showing that.

    Regards,
    David

Thank you Ron, glad my build log is of some help to others like other build logs have been of great help to me.  Case in point flying the pennant flag.
I was wondering how to fit the pennant on the main mast and couldn't really find any details on the internet.  Then I remembered seeing something on Gil Middleton's great build log.  Gil had details how pig sticks were used and I used the same idea. The pig stick is hoisted above the mast head so that the flag is not fouled by the stays.  The hoisting halyards are secured to the top.

Also secured the kedge anchor on the starboard mizzen channel.

Some more finishing touches to go.

After 13 months I am getting to the mast stage on my Revenge and realised that I was short on several dowels.
I filled in their online parts form on 29th June and a poster tube with half a dozen dowels was delivered today at no cost to me.

OK, the updated Speedy is now live:

HMS Speedy – Version 2023 – VANGUARD MODELS

These will be ready to ship early next week, as I have the printed stuff arriving at the end of this week. The old manual is still avaialbel to download and the updated manual is now also available to download.

The ladders and gratings option have been deleted, as these are all included with the 2023 version.

Regarding Trial Cutter, it is very frustrating for me, as I am still waiting for a delivery date for the phot etched sheets. These are all I am waiting for, with everything else ready to go.
