  1. If what Lou suggests doesn't work, try some rubbing compound. The fine the grade the better. I've used that in the past and it leaves a very smooth finish. Just don't over do it or you'll rub through the paint.
  2. I'm sad for us who have used your wood, but happy that you've set the priorities. As other's have said, "family first".
  3. One of the problems with scanners is that they do not produce exact copies even at 100% to prevent the counterfeiting of money. You can do what Tony suggests but also if you first scan a ruler at the size needed, you can then check and see what needs to be tweeked as far as size using photoshop or similar. The other way is to find an architectural copy shop that does copies for architects. They will automatically produce an exact copy scaled down. I use both methods depending on the size of the original. Nope.. not legal to share plans.
  4. Eyebolts are pretty easy to make if you don't want to buy them. Some thin copper or brass wire (appropriate to the existing ones) and small drill bit the size of the hole on the existing ones. Pull a length of wire over the bit and twist. It'll take a bit of practice to sort out how much tension to use when twisting but it isn't all that hard. A lot of scratch builders make their own. Do you have a photo of the pawls?
  5. Welcome to MSW, Redline. If you go here, you'll find 3 logs: https://modelshipworld.com/topic/17023-quick-find-indexes-to-build-logs-for-kits/ Which are: https://modelshipworld.com/topic/15685-viking-by-dave-cormier-artesania-latina-scale-175-the-easiest-wooden-model-boat-i-could-find-first-build-ref-19001-n/ https://modelshipworld.com/topic/20480-viking-longboat-by-dvlp47-artesania-latina/ https://modelshipworld.com/topic/10066-viking-by-hojofan-artesania-latina-10th-century-replica-gokstad/
  6. Pat, the archaeological report says "This block was found concreted to the downslope arm of the ship's forward port bower anchor." That's it, I'm afraid. Doesn't tell all that much, does it? Interesting. Possibly then it was for working the anchor?
  7. I agree with what Jaager says. Buy it when you need or if you "know" you'll be needing it. As far as bending planks, one can go a garage sale and pick old curling irons (in various sizes) for very little money.
  8. Chris, You might as Maristella's owner here as he could probably give you more than enough info:
  9. I'd have to go along with what Steve said. You might check the index here and see if there's any other builds. Check under "Small Craft" :
  10. Wonderful references, Lou. It would be easy to do a model of that. Just put some dirt in a box, cover it with fake grass and put a tombstone with "RIP my Dino 246" on it.
  11. Somethings missing here. I can't quite put my finger on it (mentally speaking). Is it possible that the lower block is missing and that they were used similar to dead eyes where you'd need two? Then a set of the holes could for knots.... Or maybe this block is upside down? Anyway, that's my guess....
  12. Why? Probably profit. AL moved from (I think it was) Italy to Vietnam due to costs. The some of the designers didn't move and founded OcCre. Their kit came out long before the monograph. They have a long history of not upgrading kits. Their Constellation is a good example of this. BTW. I have the monograph for L'Hermione and there's some errors in the plans (the framing). I'm not sure if they have corrected them yet. At this point, it's probably a ship I'll never get around to building.
  13. UPS does "partner" with various snail mail (regular postal service) for so-called "last mile" delivery. In other words, if you don't see UPS truck in your neighborhood regularly then chances are, UPS will hand it over the local postal people.
  14. The Japanese had a guided bomb towards the end of WWII and was used in several of the suicide attacks. Dropped by a Betty as I recall. The thing was actually radio controlled. Since this is a "fantasy" build, why not have actual drones using both technologies. Ok..... I'll get my coat and leave quietly now.
  15. Pivots and carronades don't count normally, only cannons were counted. Normally, the bigger the gun, the lower in the hull they were placed due to balance, etc. The catch here is it's an AL kit, so even the cannon sizes are suspect.
