Hi Sherry

I believe you are to apply another layer of basswood on the inside of the wales as shown in the 3rd photo. Yes this would be after you cut the tops off the frames. The 2nd layer should give the shell of the wale plenty of strength. I would apply the inner layer to the wale before the decking as this would be how it would/should be done in real life. Think of it this way, if you apply the decking first then apply the inner wale, you would be covering over the edges of the deck planking. This would give a nice clean look but in reality the planking would need to be left accessible in case it would need to be serviced and removed. Thus the planking should be free of the wale (inside).

I hope this helps...

Steve: Makes total sense...I pretty much already knew the proper the order, but just didn't think the structural stability would be there. I guess the inner planks on the wales will do the trick. My idea on the planking was maybe to plank out as close to the edge as possible - just because the access is better at this stage. Later, after the planks/strips on the inside, I would finish the deck planking. I'm not decided on this...just sort of 'thinking out loud." :)

Frank: Thank-you! I have a habit of searching around the house and workshop for things already on hand...such as the moulding...it just seemed like it would work. ;)

Hi Sherry

I think doing the decking now while it is exposed is the right way to go. I would finish it at this point for the same reason. The newer kit has you add the decking then inside wale planking so I think I would do the same...do the inside wale planking to stiffen the wales, then plank the decking completely starting centreline and working to the wales...have fun

What wood are you using for the decking?

Hey Sherry

STOP THE PRESS!!

I have been reviewing the plans and instructions for my kit and what I thought was an interior wale planking was actually a gunwale template. You see Mantua in my kit shows 2 layers of planking done on the exterior (fig.10) before you place this gunwale template (fig.11) to trace the actual top edge of the gunwale. After tracing the line of the gunwale on the inside you are to cut this profile (fig.12) and as much as it may seem dumb then the deck planking (fig.13). After the deck planking is finished, sanded etc, then you apply walnut inwale planking.

I think you could add the deck planking in the areas that will be covered by the deck plywood above before adding those decks. But take your time in planning that out the rest of the deck planking first. Should be fine...

Hello Sherry,

Looking good.

I'm sure that the extra layer on the inside of the wales will give it sufficient structural stability.

Good luck sawing of the bulkhead tops.

Take care,

Anja

Sherry,

Here it comes!

Anja has the same problem with her Half Moon.

She also had to break out the top of the bulkheads.

She already plank it so now she makes a waterway ( I think )

But you know how Moderators are…doing there own job  :D

You can plank over the holes.

Make sure that you not begin and end above a hole.

Then when you are finished, you don't see a thing about it!

You've got then a smooth deck planking.

Make this sense?????

Hey Sherry

Did you peek at Carlosys San Felipe postings today? He is just a bit ahead of your build and he is following Mantua's steps by planking the first planking then he did a partial 2nd planking up in the gunwale area to stiffen the planking before cutting the tops of the frames off. Then did the deck planking but didn't worry about having the after decks above the main deck. I want to start my San Felipe!!!!!!!!

Steve: I went back over the plans as well...I have to do some thinking as to whether I will do it just as the plans show or venture off on my own...we'll see. ;)  I did see Carlosys build. I actually saw it complete on another website...it is very informative.

Anja: Thank-you! I think you're right about the extra layer adding enough stability...and yes, I will need luck sawing the bulkhead tops!

Sarah: Thank-you! When you decide to venture off into scratch building I know you will enjoy it. :)  The "few" models you mentioned I have - this is actually my second.

Sjors: Yes, it does make sense...thank-you. I'll do my best not to have the planks end above a hole. :D You weren't late...right on time. :P

Jerry: Thank-you for stopping by and the generous comment! :)

Today I got a little distracted and decided the San Felipe needed a captain! I carved him from a tiny bit of basswood... and he is 1:96 scale to match the ship. He's standing on a practice run of planking.

First picture shows the unpainted and the second shows the painted.

For reference, I've placed him on a Canadian dime, which is our smallest coin in physical size - 11/16" or 17mm (approximately)

Nice Captain! I don't think you are going to have any problems carving the ornamentation.

Re: the decking, I think it should be easy enough to do the covered areas of decking first, trenails etc sand that, apply the next deck etc...then complete the rest of the decking later.

Now only 300+ sailors  to go!  ;)

Wonderful carving. He looks great!!   I agree with Steve, you shouldn't have a whole lot of problems with the ornamentation.

Hello Sherry,

Your captain is all dressed up and ready for his task. Beautifully done.

Never mind Sjors, he can be captain on both his ships.

Maybe you could name him after the real captain, William A. Hurd?

Ah well, just pick a nice name for him.

Thanks for sharing him with us.

Take care,

Anja

Michael: Thank-you! I'll be fashioning some other small carving tools later for the ship's ornamentation - the scalpel will still be used though, with caution! ;)

Sjors:  :D  :D  Anja says you have two ships of your own to be Captain on!

Anja: Thank-you! The carving work is not too hard...it's the eyes that don't work like they used to.loupe2.gif As for Sjors...I can always count him for a laugh And no, he can't be Captain on my ship. :D   I'll just call my little guy Captain Phil (Felipe).

Robert: Thank-you as well! Hopefully the carvings for the actual ship will go well.
