Old Collingwood Posted November 2, 2013 Share #481 Posted November 2, 2013 Thank you for that hamilton, i have been saving some diagrams and pictures of greyhound and her sisters, and one or two first obvious things i can see, firstly i noticed that the bulwak on the real ship steps down further back towards the mizen mast close to bulkhead no 10, and the mention of there being 11 gun ports on the real ship, i think the missing number 11 port is in the rear captains cabin, just as in many fighting vessels. hamilton Posted November 2, 2013 Author Share #482 Posted November 2, 2013 Hi Collingwood: You're right - there are definitely challenges in trying to realise an authentic Greyhound (or Blandford) out of this kit. The bulwark step is one issue that I had to fudge and that will remain a bit of a sore point with me. As for the gunports - Corel has chosen to make the foremost "bridle" port into a gunport, which results in the "missing" gunport aft that you notice. There really is no room on this kit for adding that aftmost port. Old Collingwood Posted November 2, 2013 Share #483 Posted November 2, 2013 What i will do is try to space the 11th port quite close to the side cabin window assembly, as this looks like how they have been laid out, like in the victory where nelson had one in his quarters that was lashed against the side when not in use, and when in action his best and most trusted gunnery men would fire from it. It looks like there might just be enough room just after bulhead 12, possibly not quite centred between bulkheads as with the others, but a slight nudge towards bul 12 might not look to bad, even if not open or cut out it could be a dummy port just engraved with hinge assembly. Or a scanning of a hard copy plan sheet that you have? hamilton Hi hamilton, sorry for the delay internet probs, that plan i showed of the three ships "Blandford, Lynx & Scarborough" was from a google serch of HMS Blandford, i think possibly with a little bit of - modifying here modifying there, and possibly with abit of work around the rudder post/keel and rear quarters, the eleventh port might just fit in, even if quite close to the window, or perhaps moving each gun port a few mm closer to the b/heads and loosing the difference within the gun deck length, im happy to experiment with all this, as i dont mind doing abit of kit bashing/scratch building, if you saw my De-Ag Victory on here i was building the year before last, you would see my efforts with different ideas. I expect that I'll be slowing down considerably, between work, baby and upcoming holidays.....bits and pieces here and there I suspect....we'll see how things go. Still mired in tying ratlines, which I hope to finish this evening (if I can finish up some work this afternoon). Then finally it'll be back to some more interesting work on the build - namely, constructing, outfitting and rigging the yards....then on to the final stages - sweep ports, sweeps, anchors, finishing the lanterns and the figurehead. Probably won't finish until after Christmas at this point, but that just means more time with this build, which has been as fun as it's been frustrating. This phase of ship modelling always feels like a weird stall...the repetitiveness of it, the endless clove hitches...I'm thankful it's done - now I know that it will feel like things are picking up again. Of course I probably won't have much time to work on Blandford in the coming weeks, but it's good to know that the standing rigging is now complete! Here's a photo. I am awaiting the inspiration come back again... It's good to have a break now and then... Your rigging skill is really outstanding... hamilton Posted November 14, 2013 Author Share #510 Posted November 14, 2013 Hi Ferit: I agree about taking a break - I've been feeling less pressure to work on the Greyhound, especially as my schedule fills up with other things... As for the decorative elements, I think I'm going to leave them off...at least for now. The bulwarks are now masked behind the shrouds, so I can't get at them even if I wanted - the transom I might still try something with and I will probably end up finishing the kit supplied figurehead and using that....we'll see.
