Buzzards Bay 14 by pete48 - FINISHED - 3/4" = 1' scale - SMALL - L.F. Herreshoff design

Recommended Posts

Thank You, Nils, I have sailed the Herreshoff 12 1/2 , I imagine that the 14 would be amazing to sail. I bet she's fast, stable and points to weather very well.

Best Regards,

Pete

Pretty boat, pretty model; hard to believe they are only 14 foot long, a big little boat indeed. Do they ever carry spinnakers?

Thank You, Mark, The Boat is 14 feet long on the Waterline the actual length is 17 feet 9 inches, they do carry Spinnakers and there are active racing fleets

Thank You, Piet, I was not aware of that, In Sailboat racing the down wind leg usually means that you had just rounded the top mark set your spinnaker/ gennaker ( depending on class ) and are on your way to the finish line ( a line between the pin and the  committee boat ) I like talking about sailing ( only a few more months )

Today, I started by making the stem, I then ran the rub rails on the Hull, followed by the Toe rails.  I then turned my attention to making the Cockpit floor hatch covers. Next I made the door, it took 10 pieces of wood to make. ( I am not sure if I like it, I will have to ponder it ) I then stained the Hatches cherry red to match the rest of the Cockpit (* I will have to add another coat ) I then started sanding the rails to round them off. Next will be to finish sanding the rub and toe rails. ( The Cockpit Coamings have not been installed )Here are the results

I like what you have done with the floor and seats, I think that a more simple door to the forward compartment might match the rest better. A small grill or louvres perhaps, But that is my thinking and it is your boat you need to be happy with what you build.

Looking better and better Pete.  Yeah, when planning to land the airplane the downwind leg is parallel to the runway you want to land on, which is against the wind.  Then you turn onto base leg and then onto final, which puts you in line of the runway.

Now flying commercial airlines you follow the controller's commands.  Boy, do I love flying and miss it - - kinda, sorta B)

Thank's Piet, Very interesting, if you want to stop your Sailboat you put the Bow into the wind ( in Irons ) Did you fly as a commercial Pilot? All the flying I have done was as a passenger. I would rather be Sailing

Today, I started with  the shaping ( rounding off )  the toe and rub rails. I then sanded them up to 600 grit sandpaper. ( starting with 220 and working my way up to 600 ) I then applied the first coat of varnish to the rub and toe rails along with the rudder blade. I then applied a thin coat of varnish to the Hull to fill the in blend line. Next will be to lightly sand with 600 grit sand paper and add the next coat of varnish, and to start making the Spars ( Mast and Boom ) Here are the results

Hi Pete

I agree with everyone. She's looking great, but I reckon one thing's missing. Can you guess what it is?

The trailer! Somehow, I can't get the image of the boat on the trailer ready for transport to the water, out of my mind. I think you posted it in an earlier post. Hint. Hint?

What's life without another challenge?

Cheers

Today, I started by sanding the Rub and Toe Rails with 400 grit sandpaper. Then something Patrick said, got me to thinking, so I got out my very small metal working tools and made the bow chain plate Masthead and Gooseneck. I then attached the Bow Chain plate and applied the second coat of varnish. I then turned my attention to making the mast and boom, I then made the spreaders. I went with a slightly larger boom so that I could give it a more performance oriented shape ( similar to that found on a Americas cup Boat pre cat ) The Cockpit coamings and gooseneck have not been installed. Next will be to finish the Mast and boom and get it ready for varnish and a third coat on the Rails. Here are the results

Wow baby, wait a cotton pick'n minute here.  Thou sayest thou hast no metal working skills???  Those metal parts are outstanding!  I'm sure you'll be making all the fittings from brass, yes?

Coming together really nice Pete.

Question, what kind of wood are using for the mast and booms?

Will they be from a one piece dowel?

If so, not afraid of warping later on?

Cheers,

Piet, The Flying Dutchman.

Thanks, Piet, Its all smoke and mirrors, I cheated the metal parts are super glued together, as soon as I use the soldering gun its all over, I make a big melted blob of brass and solder. I did use brass. The Mast is made from 1/4" square stock out of Alder, the Boom is made from basswood. to lay out the mast, I first cut to length, in this case the mast is 24' ( scale ) I then mark the sail slot side of the mast ( this side has no taper ) I then mark and cut the taper on the front of the mast, in this case the taper is 1/8" to 0 from the mast head to the base ( top of the deck ) I then mark and cut the taper on both sides of the mast  wich is 1/16" to 0 from the mast head to the spreaders. Then its a matter of rounding off the edges and giving the leading edge a foil shape ( I leave the sail slot side of the mast alone as this has to remain straight ) I would like to get some Sitka spruce for the Haven mast, I get the Alder from Home Depot ( I try to find the tightest grain possible )

Thank You, Mark, I am pleased with how the colors turned out, I am going for that Classic look , like you see in Wooden Boat magazine

Best Regards,

Pete

Pete,I haven't seen any really tight grain Sitka for years, we used to be able to get it locally but that was 35 years ago. I do have some very tight grain white spruce, how long do you need?

i find there are several sites with nice sitka spruce. they cut stock to many dimensions so the first work is done for you without waste.  also it is straight and stays straight. I use if for all my spars. I think I do more because when you get to the wooden boat  shows and around the beautiful yachts have it.  So a few dollars extra for model side makes me feel better.. I can not image replacing a real mast..$$$$$

this build is really looking good.

When you Google "sitka spruce" you'll get many hits where to buy it.  When I was in the aircraft repairing business i bought aircraft grade sitka spruce from an aircraft parts supplier in the Midwest.  The name escapes me right now.
