L.F. Herreshoff Buzzards Bay By Pete48 - Small 3/4" = 1' - 0" scale - Finished

Recommended Posts

HI Patrick, there is absolutely No trick, the Birch that covers the Bulkheads were stained before putting them in the boat. And they are just dry fit at this time, the Door trim was glued into position after the Stain was applied. You and everyone out there have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year

Best Regards,

Pete

Last Night, Before I got to carried away, I decided to seal up the inside of the Hull with Titebond 3 ( Brushed on ). When I awoke this morning I decided to paint the Bilge ( Grey ). I then ( while the paint was drying ) turned my attention to finishing up the framing for the Mast step. I then glued the Birch on to the forward Bulkhead. Next will be to finish the floor framing in the Cockpit. Here are the results

Thank you, Cap'n'Bob, I am very pleased with how she is turning out. I am currently working on the Floor framing ( it's a lot more involved that I had originally envisioned ) however, I think by adding these details will set this build apart from the previous 2 boats. Have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

This morning, I started by installing the Birch ply to the rear Deck Bulkhead, I then finished the Keel Bolt Block framing, I then started on the Cockpit Floor framing. it was challenging part of the build that I had wanted to do on previous versions of the Buzzards Bay. Next will be to finish the Floor framing. Here are the results

Thank's Bob, I was fortunate that today was a Snow Day from work, so I finished the Floor Framing and Decking. Next will be to start on the Seat framing. I am thinking about a removable grating for the bilge access. Here are the results

When I was still living in Chicago the local library had a book on Herreshoff and his boats, I looked for it when they had one of their sell offs but somebody got it before me.  I can't wait to see the finished product.

Hi Pete

I just found your build log and read it from front to back :dancetl6: and it looks great

I'm also a Herreshoff fan. Joel White's Haven 12 1/2 (1:1) is on my bucket list, Hope I get to build her.

The gaff rig is also one of my favourites. Years back I've build a 27' Black Swan also with a gaff rig, loved her and still miss her :(

I still have the plans though, maybe a model of her one day...

The funny thing is that I never considered the Buzzards Bay 14 as a model, but reading your log is giving me all kinds of ideas.

Keep up the good work, she is a beauty.

Cheers Deon

Thank you, Deon, I am planning to build the Joel White Haven 12 1/2 as my next build, in a 1" = 1' - 0" scale  I have started a mock up just to see how things will work out. since  I usually build models of Boats that I would like to own or go sailing on, and since I was a kid I wanted a Buzzards Bay 14. here's a pic of my Haven 12 1/2 mock up

Pete

I hope that everyone had a Merry Christmas, I was able to sneak in some building time last night and this morning, ( Before the New Years Eve Extravaganza ) I started by framing in the cockpit seat walls ( the proper seat height was also something that I wanted to get right on this build ) I then installed Birch plywood ( Stained Cherry red )  to the framing, I then framed in the Cockpit locker hatch openings ( at this point I decided to keep the Hatches in the shut position ) I then installed the pre-laid out and grooved birch ply for the seats. Next will be to Frame the Rear Deck, I hope that everyone has a Safe New Years eve and a Fantastic 2016. Here are the results

With all the Family functions now out of the way, I started by cutting out the hole in the Transom to allow the Tiller to pass thru. I then decided to add a piece of birch to the inside of the transom ( cockpit side ) and then gave the Transom more shape. I then built and installed the aft Deck. I then started on the Main deck framing. Next will be to finish the Main Deck framing and install the Deck. Here are the results

Beautiful woodwork on the decks and "family area", Pete. The contrasting woods work well together.
