HMS Sirius 1797 by paulsutcliffe - 1:48 - POF from NMM plans

Recommended Posts

Gone the other way now and beautiful sunny days which means the gardens have to be looked after and I cant get into the garage, however I have managed to lay some planks, I opened the garage this morning to hopefully get some work done but have spent the whole day mowing trimming etc so nothing done to the sirius again

Regards

Paul

I have also spent the last couple of days polishing this side and the wale, trying to get a nice sheen

Six nine pound cannons on the way as well plus three carronades, it was at this point I realised I hadn't cut the last port at the stern, I left the deck planks short here due to advice from she who must be obeyed to leave more deck open so you can see further down into the depths of the ship

I have measured for the last port and think I am going to be lucky and it should just fit on the end of the planking .

The First picture shows the sheen appearing on the beautiful mahogany framing after polishing

I have also carried on playing/making moulds for the differenttcannon after success with the cheerful carronades, this is my first resin 18lb, excuse the poor pictures, I had just blackened the copper eyebolts and rings with liver of sulfur so still damp in places

A little more progress

Berthing up all completed First two 12lb cannons and carriages with breeching rope made, eyes in the bulwark are solid silver

20190811_182009.thumb.jpg.f9fd2b8eba9cfb195ab7926f861f4b05.jpg

I also just noticed the saw marks on the capstan beam in this picture so will have to sort that out now, the carriages have all their bits apart from trunnion caps which im still not sure how to make at this size and quoins

First quarterdeck carronade in the way

20190811_190641.thumb.jpg.0310ea46a2bbc0bc4e6417d4e20e0eb3.jpg

I've added all the parts as per the AOTS Diana for the carronade but there is no rigging details in the book, breeching rope was presumably smaller than a 12lber

Solid silver eyes?  Why on earth would you do that?

Hi Dowmer, I used the silver because it is as hard as brass and hopefully will tarnish to a nice dark colour eventually, I hope, also adds a bit of interest 😁

Two carronades completed, I made some slightly thinner rope for the breeching

Not sure how to display run in with breeching rope frapped up over the barrel as per the one on the right or run out on the left20190816_174827.thumb.jpg.6bc55a9e2e87b3412e4dd6cc195c105e.jpg

I removed the mizzen channels for polishing and also decided i was going to make my own deadeyes and will eventually remove them all from the Port side and replace

20190922_160445.thumb.jpg.81c671d25ff292faa1e5a4d42c9b4992.jpg

As i dont have a lathe still, i used a drill to turn some aged holly and then an old broken drill shaped with a diamond disc to shape the edge of the deadeyes then parted off each one

A bit of cleaning and polishing needed and maybe dyed black or brown, not sure yet
