I love cats but one thing I've learned since taking up ship modeling is, don't pet the cat while rigging!

Those quarter gallery lights can be a real challenge. The geometry is quite strange to wrap one's head around. However, you seem to be getting the better of them! Nice looking moggies, too.

I thought moggies was a British name for cats - obviously I was wrong.

I looked up the definition:- a cat, typically one that does not have a pedigree or is otherwise unremarkable.

This doesn't seem to be quite the sort of cat Paul has.

Ha thanks Keith, but definitely not moggies Druxey, according to Keith's definition

Thanks all for the likes and comments, I just wish it was a bit warmer in the garage so I could get more done, I have also decided I will make a companion rather than a grating on the quarterdeck after seeing the pictures of the Bristol on Chris wattons vanguard models log. I think it will be more appropriate, what do you think??

Changed my mind again, in the Diana book ther are photos of the models in the nmm, three have skylight companions but one appears to have a grating, my plan shows a grating so I have decided to go with that

Quarterdeck plan stating companion

20191224_123711.thumb.jpg.450a4c79c5c016303fc4c047e481f8e5.jpg

And the gun deck plan showing the grating as a companion???

20191224_123729.thumb.jpg.14497974ea5a79cc608234e199eaad4f.jpg

So my effort with ebony coamings and gratings, slightly smaller than all other gratings on the ship, for privacy????

Paul, how's the garage, warmer? It's been almost spring like here with temps in the 50's, the trees are budding. Beautiful work on the Sirius.

  • 3 months later...

So after a 3 month break to finish the clerk of the cheques yacht the Sirius is back on the table, I decided that I didn't like some of the work I had previously done especially the ending of the quarterdeck so I cleared the deck ready for action

20200414_112533.thumb.jpg.f8e36bdc146558649b2994804de94bcd.jpg

I removed the planks at the back end of the deck and carried them back to the transon, losing the cut away from the bosses instructions

20200418_120050.thumb.jpg.b40dd68c33c8f827f4745036c37550f9.jpg

added all the bolts to the waterway, carronade mounts and gratings which I hadn't done before for some reason, then moving onto finishing the quarted decks guns properly with cap squares etc

20200418_120112.thumb.jpg.a8d70157067f1015d4b209a01d5ba986.jpg

the helm completely snapped in half, I have no idea how this happened and didn't know how I was going to fix it, in the end I had use long tweezer type things and feed it out the helm port, including the steering ropes, bow im going to repair/replace and thread back through im not sure, might have to jury rig something

That snapped tiller is an unusual accident. At very least, you will need to drill and peg first before attempting reinstallation. Good luck with this.

Sorry Keith no more frighteners, so all six guns for the quarterdeck completed, not attached yet as some cleaning and polishing of all the deck beams needs to be done and the sill on the aft most port needs fixing, cap squares not easy to make and hats off to all the guys ie BE doing it at 1/64 and smaller

20200424_151906.thumb.jpg.bb8fc0bd171de22e1cb11bc77e437eca.jpg20200424_151855.thumb.jpg.6ff064130e0142da35e314e145daf178.jpg20200424_151901.thumb.jpg.50f0ba6bee2c90a6362d26edbd301f98.jpg

So four guns to finish for the foredeck and sort out the tiller mess, as you can see above I have all the ropes that were attached to the old one pulled through, how im going to reattach im not sure, I can feed a new helm through but how do I attach the ropes and a new gooseneck will be interesting

One cannon and one carronade to go for the foredeck and the guns will be finished at last, then turning the boat around and bringing the port side up to the same level as starboard, timberheads, deadeyes etc

Last gun rigged and ready to be fitted, spent the rest of the day making the quarterdeck barricade, the top newel posts type thingies took some making as to small for my makeshift lathe, each one was shaped and finished by hand with a scalpel, broke a few while drilling also and ended up making 17 in the end to get these 8 that were identical and reasonable shape
