I just found your build log.  I like how you make every part work as it should.  Then you teach us how we can do the same thing.  Keep up the fine job.

Bob

Hi Bob

Thank you!

That`s why I am in forums, to learn from others, and to show how I do the different jobs. It`s all a play of give and take........

I always try to do the single parts as close to the original as possible, but there will be some of them a bit different to original. This comes, when it is easier to mount them to the ship.

Todays work was to finish the mounting parts  for the wheelhouse davits, only 8 parts, but a bit complicated. I had to take care, that the mounts are not soldered to the davits, especially the lower mounts must move free.

Lower mounts done, the davits can move free, sorry, made no photos from the working stages :( .

Thank you all for watching and your so many likes!

Hi Paul

Thank you!

There is still more of that brass parts to come, the most difficult things are not even started. I will have to make some winches for the wheelhouse boats, and the davits for the longboats are even more work to do. Next steps will be the mounting parts to the small boats davits, then I will try to do the davits for the longboats.

Hi Mark

That is on my intention, I like to show how I work, maybe it can help others.

Today was a not so much metalworking day, just the upper holders to the Wheelhouse davits soldered. I used baking paper between the holders and the davits, to keep them adjustable.

Most of the day were spent with the drawings for the second version of the levers to the wheelhous boats. They are a bit more difficult than the first ones, but the function is much better to see. I used the plan nr. 231 from the Atlas du Genie Maritime, and made my drawings in OpenOffice. This took me some hours, the drawings will be glued to 0,5mm brass, middle parts of the levers will be made from 1 x 2 mm brass bar.

The original plan

Hi again, repeatedly :)

This weekend was a bit busy not only for model building, but also with home renovation. New kitchen furniture arrived, lots of work for the next days.........

But I managed to do something for the SMS Danzig too :P ! First I had to regroup the new parts at the drawing, not to waste too much brass sheet.

post-24068-0-37692900-1458501543_thumb.jpg

The printed sheets were glued to the brass plate, 0,5 mm used as the most parts are. I used superglue for that, it`s the best way to do it.

post-24068-0-66292500-1458501697_thumb.jpg

As first parts I made the mounting plates, they were cut out with a little oversize

post-24068-0-76477900-1458501767_thumb.jpg

I always use a wooden collet to hold that small parts, working is much easier that way.

post-24068-0-95336100-1458501856_thumb.jpg

First I filed the outer contour of the parts, different files were used for filing.

post-24068-0-49463200-1458501998_thumb.jpg

Next I made the inner hape

post-24068-0-98101700-1458502101_thumb.jpg

All four plates done, the holes were made the way I showed former

post-24068-0-81657100-1458502186_thumb.jpg

Even the first four eyelets are ready, they are made from spare etched parts.

Hi Bob

Thank you :)

There are so much more solutions to find, this model will be a very long term project. At the time I`m thinking about the next soldering forms, this new levers are a bit more complex than the older ones. In coming summer I will build the hull, with a full removeable deck, and maybe working sails and rigging, problems (and solutions?) will come up.............

I always look for the simplest way to make things, imitation or improvement free for everyone!

Thank you all for watching, comments and your so many likes!

Today I could manage, to solder the eyelets to the mounting plates, these parts are really small.

The eyelets

Finished mounting plates, some smaller differents are still to see, this is only the outside of the eyelets, the holes are all in correct position. This is important, the levers will not work correct, when the holes are in different position.

First of all, thank you for your so many likes :)

Some may wonder, how to make such a soldering form, here comes the explanation. This form is meant to solder the large parts from the photo, shown at the foreground.

post-24068-0-01761900-1458847698_thumb.jpg

The printed paper sheet glued to a piece of 2mm plywood, I use common glue stick for such things.

post-24068-0-94784000-1458847823_thumb.jpg

Inner part of the form with one of the outside parts behind it

post-24068-0-43848200-1458847888_thumb.jpg

First outer part cut and grinded to correct shape

post-24068-0-87620900-1458848057_thumb.jpg

Center part of the soldering form with first cutout. This cutouts are important to "copy" them to the outer parts of the form!

post-24068-0-37834200-1458848143_thumb.jpg

All 3 parts of the form, pinned together. The pinholes are needed, the brass parts will be held here in position, even the different axles will be placed here in the levers.

post-24068-0-01998600-1458848283_thumb.jpg

The form with all cutouts made, see the narrow spots on the outer form parts.

post-24068-0-04997800-1458848378_thumb.jpg

The finished form, closed with M3 bolts, ready for soldering.

post-24068-0-31070200-1458848468_thumb.jpg

Next will be the soldering of the levers, hope for your interest.........

Gerhard

HI!!

Just to keep you all informed, this build has no stop, but there is a lot of sawing work to do, and a lot of filing after too. All the levers have to be made at the moment, I cut the with a jewelers saw from 1 mm brass, and will have to file them to correct shape. So there are no photos at the time, but will come when I have done the work.

The last days were filled up with work for my home renovation, so there were not too much time for model making. But the first one of the new levers is done, it took hours of preparation, and only a few miniutes to solder. The photos show, how the parts are set into the form, and the soldered lever. Each of this levers is made from 1mm Brass sheet, and consists of 9 single parts.

Hi Jim

YES; it is a lot of "blacksmithing" work for the davits going on. Every one of them needs some hours of preparing work, and about 5 minutes of soldering. To show, how many small parts are needed for one lever, see the first photo. The second pic shows the first pair of levers in their mountog plates, just pinned with needles for a test. Everything is fine, the levers move free!

Hello Gerhard,

I wish I had caught this build earlier but I know I'm going to love following it! A very interesting vessel with a lot of machinery - spectacular! Beautiful metal work and I loved your pivot carriages. I can't wait to see it all go together.

Hi Glenn

Thank you! I too want to see it all thogether, but still some way to go there. The now made levers will get some "extensions", then are some rollers to be mounted, and axels and eyelets are to fix to complete the whole levers. When it comes to machinery, the SMS DANZIG was powered by two oscillating 2-cylinder steam engines, this will be the same in the model, see the first post in my thread.

Today I made the third lever, so there are no pics, they all look equal. Soory for being so boring B)

Gerhard,

The engine is wonderful! I can't wait to see them in the model. Beautiful work!

Glenn

Hi Glenn

Will take some time, til it comes to the engines. But I`m curios too, how they work in the ship, the revs are calulated to a max of around 60per minute, so the engines can drive the wheels at original speed. Before I build this engines, I will try to build a smaller one of the same system, which I constructed myself, but only about 50mm high and 70 mm wide.

Just catching up with all your wonderful metalwork, Gerhard. Ausgezeichnet!

Hi druxey

DANKE!!!  (Thank you!!!)

I`m always trying to do my best, when something goes wrong, I search for the mistakes, and build a new one. But that was not necessary with this levers, took just a lot of time. Including all the drawings and preparation time I spent about 2 weeks with that.

Hi to all interested :piratebo5:

Today I could finish with the first set of levers, all 4 are soldered, a little grinding work is still to do.

post-24068-0-68894500-1459797389_thumb.jpg

Next will be the set of 4 straight levers, and combine them all to working parts.

Hi again, and thank you all for your  likes :) !!

Today was not so much time for the ship, so I made only the first of the straight levers, and the soldering form of course. The method is the same as before, and I could manage to set the first set of levers together for a first fitting test. Everything looks fine, when all levers are done I can make some changes at the soldering forms to complete the whole sets.

Hello and first of all, many thanks again for your likes, and watching in

The last days were filled up with a lot of work for my home renovation, but I also found time to complete the new davits. I had to solder the last levers in the form, then some smaller parts were mounted, the levers mounted to sets, and some eyelets soldered to both sides of  the davits.

Small parts to be soldered to the levers, use baking paper to solder. This will keep the rollers running.

Hi Nenad

It`s just a matter of practice. I`ve needed lots of trials to get to this point. I never quit, when things dont go the way I want them. If some solution wont come fast, I do some other things, and somewhen I get it. I came to that baking paper trick, by baking "Apfelstrudel". So I thought, when this does not stick to the paper, I will try it for soldering. And it works! :D

Gerhard

After the davits are mostly done, I was searching for new things to do, before I can start with the ships hull. Remember, I cannot build large things at the time, until my home renova<tion is completed

So I decided, to build as a next part the pump, which had been on deck, as I have read the diary from Eduard Arendt correct. See the last part of this page, sorry, it`s only in german language.

post-24068-0-93816600-1460217592_thumb.jpg

I choose the pump in the red marked sector, the drawing is (as mostly) taken from the Atlas du Genie Maritime!

I`ll be back..............

with more abut that soon!

The baking paper trick is a new one to me - that is a brilliant solution!

Servus :)  druxey

That trick is so often needed, even when I`m making the pump. For all "working" soldered parts you need something to avoid contact between fixed and moving pieces. Baking paper is good for that, it is really thin, but strong enough not to be soldered trough. But; there is one more trick on that: NEVER drill holes for the axels, just stick them through the paper. Every drilled hole wil be too large, and the solder will come to the places you dont want it to be.

Gerhard

Hello once more

Thank you all for the (so many) likes!

The first steps to the decks pump are made, the center of the handles, the pistons, and the cylinders with their case are cut from different brass material.

A little progress was made at the pump, the hardest part is still to come. I want to have the ability to have a "working" pump, driven by a small motor, so I cannot solder all parts.

Pistons with basic rods

post-24068-0-90212000-1460448284_thumb.jpg

"A-Beam" before soldering. It is enough to hold the parts with pins, no extra form needed.

post-24068-0-88523300-1460448378_thumb.jpg

Both Beams soldered, they wil carry the pump lever, and one side wall also fixed.

Back again with the next part of the pump.

The full lever unit with levers, rods and pistons. The thread at the right side is for moving the pump.

The nearly completed pump

post-24068-0-19401900-1460490233_thumb.jpg

The pump with stands, everything can move free. It will be no problem, to move the levers with a small geared motor. Two figures will be added, with their hands at the levers, even this figures must be converted from "solid" to "moving" ones.
