There is nothing wrong with Belgium beer….

But you are Dutch, and that's why you have to serve Dutch !!!!!! 

Then about the vase….. it's better to put the spare wood somewhere where we can found it if needed.

And because there are big planks, a high vase is a good solution.

Also the fact, I don't have to buy flowers because the vases are in use…….      

 

You are right about the pictures….

Still have to go to Vlaardingen…...

The last thing….I think that we are all having the same problem…money…..

What about the ratlines….it's all experience...

After a few 1000 , you know how it works.

It's not that difficult.

Let me see if I can explain it for you .

 

You are using the clove hitch.

Also use a pair of tweezers.

Don't pull to hard so the shrouds are still in one line and not getting curved.

You have to practice to see how it goes.

Print the picture out and keep it next to the build.

Then it should work.

Not to steal your thread Sjors but I feel Adam's angst.

 

As is shown on my san fran build, I am far, way far, from an expert on ratlines... more like a duffer but I felt the same way when I looked down the long road of a few thousand knots and had no idea how to do it.

 

Sjors is right on the money... the physical part is not hard, it's repetitive and has a right and a wrong way but it gets easier after a few and brainless after a few hundred.

 

That said tho... tying the knot is easy once you figure it out... the hard part is trying to make it match the one below it without too much tension and match the height gap so your sailors don't hurt themselves.  And that too takes a while to wrap the head around but gets more understandable as you proceed.

 

Another cool thought is from Popeye the Sailor... he said imagine you're the guy on the boat needing these lines to climb on... how would they need to be? For whatever weird reason, imaging that helped me understand it just a bit better. Thanks Popeye!

It's oke Randy.

 

I forget to tell that I keep a distance between the ratlines of 5 mm.

And use a template behind the ratlines so they are straight and all the same distance.

Grant give me the idea to use different colours and do first each 5 th ratlines and then each 3 and then fill it up.

To be honest , It don't work for me.

I prefer to do each ratline after each other.

But maybe it works for you.

You have to try out what works the best for you.

Ratlines are a personal thing as there is several ways of completing them

You will find your own way after a while

It is a very touchy freely thing

I would definitely countenance the template to give you something to work to but then it is all down to look and feel

They are easy to remove if you make a mistake as long as you don't make use of glue that some people do

This is one thing I would steer clear of glue on

it's good of you to say Randy....but I'm sure this has crossed someone's mind at one time or another.  how would this work?  it's the functionality of the aspect your working on.   some folks even find a figure of the same scale to use as a gauge.  I think this is one of the main reasons why I enjoy Dr. Dafi's work so much.   his aim at creating the functionality and realism,  is very interesting.....really puts himself into his hobby.   very comendable

 

if anyone's looking for a good tutorial for creating ratlines..........one only needs to look no further that sjor's build    well done Sjors!

Ah, the old ratlines.  Days of mindless repetition.  That's why I like it ...... lost my mind years ago.

 

Sjors is certainly 'King Rat'.  Glad he mentioned the template.  Get some nice heavy card stock and get it behind the shrouds to give you a good background.  I don't actually use it as a spacing template.  For that I just use a stick cut to the proper width to serve as the spacer.  And although Mick cautions against using glue on the knots, I do use a pinprick of flat clear acrylic lacquer on the knots on the end shrouds.  It doesn't make the lines stiff but it does hold the knots fast.

 

You'll develop your own comfort zone.  Just don't make them too tight so that the shrouds pull together halfway up the mast.

I used a template and then changed to a spacer of sorts... even still it was tough. I'm proud of my ratlines but not delusional enough to think they are stellar... they are ratlines that represent a first try and from that a learning... the next ship(s), and there are plans for many, will benefit from this ship in many ways including rigging....

When I finish the whole part of the ratlines, I used diluted glue on the knots.

So I know for sure that they are stay in place.

Thanks for the pictues of the Ratline construction. I will be doing this in the near future and was wondering the same thing.....and yes it was FINE Belgian Ale.....quite outstanding.....I don't remember drinking Ale in Then Netherlands when I was there.....what would you reccomend??? Can it be bought here in the States? I figured a good Dutchman (perhaps it could be Piet) would know Ale's...and he like's Belgian......lol

Thank you for the clove hitch picture Sjors!   Scanned that over a few times and okay - the knot itself isn't so scary (did  a couple on a stick here).... so when the time comes.....   .. I will be using you and others as inspiration.  Fear knot    questions will be coming... (get it,  knot instead of not...  I crack myself up).

Hello Sjors, I just saw the weather and it showed a hurricane going into the UK, you'll probably get part of it too.....hope all is well for you and Anja, and be safe.  You will get to experience what we deal with in Texas and Piet experiences in Florida.  They aren't fun.  However we used to stock up on beer and go to the strongest house in the neighborhood and have a "Hurricane Party" until they would pass through.....helps one to weather the storm....Be safe....

Sorry for the late replay but I had a long day of work today....

A broken shift of 12 hours totally !

I'm happy that I was yesterday free of work.

I talk to my collega's and it was not fun to drive with a bus yesterday.

But everybody survive and all the busses are in one piece.

 

The San Ildefonso is back on the shelf because I need a serving machine.

Mobbsie has make one for me and I'll have to wait till he brings it to me ( in about 3 weeks )

So back to the Mirage .

I have done nothing so no update.

But when I can go on with her, it should be making the yards and place them.

This weekend no duty so maybe a little progress.....

But that's not a promise !!!!!!!!
