Ship looks great. Question for you. When you painted galley did you have to remove any of the black paint or coating on yours and if so how did you do it. Mine is covered with a black coating and other paints do not show through. If i rub the black with my finger it smudges. Any advice will be appreciated

Are you talking about the brass pieces for the stern?

I tried to sand the top coating off.  It didn’t look right so I hit them with acetone to strip their coat of covering off (an old toothbrush works great for that).  Then I sealed it with Mod Podge to give the paint something to adhere to.  I let it dry for 24 hours and then painted.

I didn’t like the initial blue that I painted the stern windows so I painted them black and gloss coated to make them look like glass.

I’m working on the head timbers/frames.  Getting them into the right position is a bear.  I’m getting it, but it’s slow going.

I’m making them from 1/8” basswood.  I’ll make the rails from card in the same fashion as the cheeks.

I’ve made two more head timbers and installed them.

I also cut three out of four holes in the cheeks for the bow gammonings.

Quick disclaimer: the head timbers are a lot more perpendicular to the cut water than they appear in the photos.

Thank you for all the likes.

I have six of eight head timbers in place and all four holes for the bow gammoning cut.

I cut out number seven and discovered that I had beveled in the wrong direction, lol.

I glued another drawing to the wood and that’s where it’s sitting now.

I’ve been putting off working on the head because I didn’t want to build it incorrectly.

I’m working at slightly beyond the max of my skill level.

However, I learn by doing and the Victory has a twisted hull anyway, which can’t be fixed, so I’m not too worried if I make a mistake during the rest of construction so long as I learn from it.  I’m using the rest of this build as a learning tool.

I’m learning a lot which I will carry forward to my next builds (like making sure that your bulkheads are square and that your keel piece isn’t warped).

The port head timbers are in place.  There will be some adjustments to them (Including putty) during construction of the head rails, but they are in place.

Thank you, Mark!

I have finished the head timbers.

I have a head rail made and installed.  I have the opposite one made, but not installed.

The head rail that is installed is actually my second attempt.  The first attempt is the splintered piece of wood in the second picture.  The second attempt is 1.6mm card.

Once I get the head rails (with the heads of the main rails) done, I’m going to do a round of paint work.

I’m in the process of figuring out how exactly I’m going to make the main rails with all associated mouldings.

I found a problem with the wales provided with the kit that I installed as per the kit, before I started using the AOTS plans.

The wale has to come off ahead of the catheads to allow for the head.

I broke a head timber while removing it so I’m letting the head timber dry for a bit.

The pictures look ugly, but that’s how demolition is.

I circled the parts I’m having difficulty with.

@GrandpaPhil, ouch! I'd take some fine wood putty and shape that damage out, then sand her down and paint it. Green putty would work great also, just have to have a day for drying time. I feel your pain, mine breaks every-time I look at her wrong!!

The front part of the second wale is off.

I’ve broken several major parts and reglued them so I’m going to let the Victory dry over night.

Having said all that, I’m making good progress and having fun with it.

The Victory is coming along and I’m learning a lot.

I had to resize and modify the middle head rail on the starboard side due to my failure to account for the 3-Dimensional shape of the head rails.

I also made the port side knee for the cathead and installed it.  I need it to dry before I can resize the port middle head rail.

Slowly but surely.

Quick discovery (read lesson learned), next time I really need to make sure that I get everything square and even.

I have a 1/4” difference on the beakhead.

I will do better on Triton.

And now for something completely different!

A 54mm British Infantry Officer from the American War of Independence (AWI):

I think it’s a Call To Arms figure, but I’m not really sure.

I’m a little out of practice, but I think it came out okay.

It just needs some flock around the base after all paint dries.
