The starboard side carvings are carved, except for the banner which wraps around the bow.

Once the glue dries on the piece I broke, I will seal the top piece and paint it.

Here’s the top front piece, including the crown and the floral bouquet looking piece on the bottom.

I’m going to try and make the crown as part of that front piece.

If it doesn’t work, then I’ll make it separately.

As campy as it sounds, I think I’m going to make the banner out of a piece of card and paint it blue with the saying on it.

While trying to get the rest of the saying for the banner, I discovered that I painted the port side incorrectly.  The sash should have been red.  So, I repainted it.

I’ve got the front piece in work and am getting ready to rough out the two pieces of floral design.

I realized that those would probably be easier if made in two pieces.

That is looking good Phil. You certainly have a knack for that tiny carving detail sir.

Thank you.  I’m trying.  This has been a learning experience.

I’m having a lot of fun learning, though.

Maybe by the time I get through the Triton’s carvings, I will be good.

I’m getting better and more confident with my carving skills.

Starboard side and the center shield piece.

I did my best on the center shield piece, but the scale is tiny, so I apologize.

The center piece is primed.

The first floral piece is carved and sealed.

I’m not even going to try to carve the flowers.

I’m going to speckle them in with paint in much the same way as I would make camouflage.

The center piece is on.

As with the rest of this project, it’s not perfect, but it’ll do.

I need to make a spacer piece for behind the center piece.

I am going to let everything dry and do more tomorrow.

I think it's very daring of you to get up so 'close and personal' Phil. At this tiny scale, nothing looks perfect does it! But I'm sure a metre or so back she looks magnificent 😎. A very ambitious project and great to follow.

The figurehead is almost complete.

I just need to paint the crown, make a piece of banner and a spacer piece, and do some touch ups.

The heavy carving is done.

I am very pleased with how it has come out so far.

Thank you all for the comments and the likes!

I added some small details to the crown and painted it.

I attached it, and a few other minor details.

I did some touch ups.

I made a spacer piece and attached it.

With the exception of a few very minor spots resulting from attaching the crown to the rest of the figurehead, I believe that the figurehead is complete.

This is the second figurehead that I have made.

I am happy with how it came out, especially considering the complexity of it.

It wasn’t anywhere nearly as bad as I thought it would be, once I broke it down into pieces.

For the new carvers and the people who would like to learn, I strongly recommend the Intro to Carving Group Project.  That’s how I learned the basics.

It doesn’t matter how your test carvings come out, that’s how you learn.  Over half of mine went in the trash.

The hardest part is just deciding to try.

All I used on this is a standard scalpel with a No. 11 blade.

Thank you very much!

I made the bitts at the top of the upper head rails.

I have a pattern made for the head rails and am currently waiting on the piece of card that I laminated them to, to dry.

I used an Army Painter brand Soft Tone on the figurehead.  It looks better now.

Once I get the hull completely built, I will shadow and highlight everything.

I’m currently working on the beakhead bulkhead.  I’m roughing out the officer’s heads.  Once those are in place, I’ll make the rest of the bulkhead in one piece and make the trim on the upper part of the bulkhead after I install the upper head rails.

Quick note to remember for anyone using the AOTS books as plans for their model.  The detail pages may not exactly be the scale that they say they are, so double check enlargement or reduction percentages on your model.

Just for the record, despite this minor flaw, the AOTS books are awesome.  I own most of them.

It was a steep learning curve, but a fun one.

I’m trying to get good, so I can do the carvings on Triton and Winchelsea justice.

I’ve got a set of AAMM plans of La Reale that the Admiral bought me for my birthday this past year too.  I would like to build that after I finish Winchelsea.

I made the first part of the beakhead bulkhead.  It’s just sitting there.

My beakhead bulkhead is being carved.  In hindsight, I should have made this in multiple pieces.  Oh well.  Live and learn.  If it doesn’t turn out well, I’ll make another.

The head rails only lack paint now, otherwise they are done.  I made the mouldings.  The beakhead bulkhead is just test fitted in place.

Next step: paint!

Here is where I am starting off for the day.

The center piece is partially base coated.

The top rail needs touched up.

I also had a fortuitous event this morning.  I discovered that I had a good sail plan for the Victory which is the last thing that I lacked.

I found it on page 190 of Bjorn Landstrom’s The Ship.

I had planned on pausing Victory to build the Edmund Fitzgerald but I believe that I am going to press on with Victory.  I am two and a half years into this build and I think it is time to finish it.
