Good for you! The wife has been suffering from cabin fever the last few days but she is getting ready for some sun also..... (except the pollen is driving her nuts)

We normaly see rain here  so its nice for the sun to dry us off,   I too suffer from Hay fever  and am on meds for it  all year round.

Good evening all,    I managed to get a bit done this afternoon  -  I cleaned up the front cowl  seams  and added just the smallest amount of putty.

Looking good, OC.   I take it the hatch over the engine isn't removable?

Hi Mark,   no  it had to be glued down to seal it where it meets the fuselage, it was built as a two piece unit  - it fitted quite well  but gluing it down was better.

That had to be scary flight.  Especially coming to and finding the plane "gliding" at 40,000 feet.

Hi all,   I did a bit more on the spit today  - next was to build the first of the two wings rads, these are five section units  - they were assembled then the rad filters inside were painted flat alum, with the indside bodywork cockpit green, there is then a rear adjustable vent cover that was fitted with an actuation lever in the open position, this area was also painted.

After I used my pencil for some shading and white for highlighting.

Just dry fitted will keep them off and fit after spraying the bottom.

OC,

She's coming along marvelously! I love all the spitfire marks, the MK1 best of all. Have you seen the Guy Marshall special about the reconstruction of a BoB MK1, it's really a great piece of work. It' on you tube, its a Channel 4 Full episodes video. Sorry I could get the link to work right, there shouldn't be any problem finding it. Sorry too, if you've already watched it.

Ditto,  Thanks Lou.

OC, It is a video worth watching. The amount of work and precision that went into the project is amazing.  The Spits where advanced creatures and cutting edge technology at the time. It is a video ( in 4 parts worth watching).

No progress  today,   our power went  just after midnight this morning  I was up trying to fix it  through the night  as it affects everything our gas bolier  needs electric to work - that  wouldn't come on,  our internet runs off the electric  (doesn't take batteries)  and of course no lights   so all I could do when not trying to fix the problem  was  to edit pics on my laptop  trying not to run out of battery.

Anyway it was still off  12 hours later  our landlors got hold off an emergency electrician  whom came out  (imagine the difficulty social distancing in a small house  - poor bloke sufferes from ashma)   he checked it  and the fault was with the lighting circuity  so he isolated it  and got the rest - sockets,  heater, internet  to work.

Dont mention the fridgefreezer   - you can imagine  12 hours off.

Wasn't very enjoyable  I had to catch up with some sleep  this eve  - hence  why nothing has been done on the Spit, it will  though  tomorrow.

Yep its anoying  we cant use  upstairs or downstairs  main lights, we have to  use lamps  and  temp  battery  operated lights  like on the stairs  bathroom etc.    the electrician didn't want to wait around  we could tell he was  very anxious about being at our house  incase  he/we  caught something   goodness knows how long we have to put up with it for  - it isnt a problem during the day.

To be honest  I think  that had some Canadian pilots   over here  flying  (my dad  use to tell me about some)  and Free French  - Dutch, the aircraft were squadron  owned but the above pilots could fly them.

I always assumed 402sqn   based at West Malling  was RAF, thats what I have been searching for  West Malling Spit IX  squadrons,   I know the squardon had many different a/c types  over the years  and  times at Malling  including  the Spit IX.

It is a bit confusing  trying to track down reliable facts of  Spitfire IX  aircraft  that would have been at RAF West Malling  from early 44 - 45,   this was the time frame  (I think)  my dad was stationed there, he certainly worked on othe marks of spit  (I chose the IX  as I brought the kit.    I have done the normal Wiki  searches  and googled his base  to find all the Spitfires that would have been there  during those years, but there is a lot of less than reliable info  out there.

I am sure I will  find markings for one my dad would have worked on  -  "keep digging OC"

It is a bit confusing  trying to track down reliable facts of  Spitfire IX  aircraft  that would have been at RAF West Malling  from early 44 - 45,

Yeah they were moving a lot of aircraft and units around once they got to Europe after the invasion.... this is the info I have....

Hurricane Mk.I (April 1941 – May 1941) RAF Digby
Hurricane Mk.IIa (May 1941 – April 1942) RAF Digby
Hurricane Mk.IIb (June 1941 – April 1942) RAF Digby
Spitfire Mk.Vb (April 1942 – May 1942) RAF Colerne
Spitfire Mk.IXc (May 1942 – April 1943) RAF Colerne, RAF Kenley & RAF Redhill
Spitfire Mk.Vc (April 1943 – June 1944) RAF Digby, RAF Horne & RAF Merston
Spitfire Mk.IXc (July 1944 – August 1944) RAF Digby, RAF Horne & RAF Merston
Spitfire Mk.XIVe (August 1944 – June 1945) RAF Hawkinge, Forward deployed in Belgium & at Grave in the Netherlands
Spitfire XVI (June 1945 – July 1945) Wunstorff Germany, disbanded at RAF Fassberg Germany.

During the time period in question it is noted that they flew from many fields in the Digby, Horne and Merston areas as the bomber defence situation required rapid area deployments in the Kent county area. In the early time flying Spit V's and in the later time, (before deploying to Europe) Spit IX's....

It would have to be in that period of time....

Here is a sortable list of old RAF Stations Wikipedia, I hope it helps
