Anchor grapnel.......

This piece has some difficulty since we have to weld 8 pieces in a little space.  Producing heat that will pump out those pieces that are already welded.   So I decided to make a “mold” where all pieces can be “secured” ....... Two pieces of wood with 5 holes.... 1 for the central piece an 4 for the hooks.

Magnificent work, Hellmuht. Very impressive - the glass buoys, the net and the grapnel all amazingly well done. And the vessel herself - what a beautiful build!

Hi bob

I don’t know if you got my message.  Yes I would say that the armed longboat and the St Caterina are the “right” way to start.  The armed longboat has a lot of videos, tutorials in YouTube.  Most in Spanish but graphically well explained

regards

Hello Hellmuht,

Thanks for your reply. I just looked at my Messages Inbox and I didn't receive a message from you. I'm not sure why it isn't there.

I just read your entire build log again and you are a very skilled craftsman! The details you are adding to this boat are wonderful. I love the grapnel, buckets, and nets. The glass ball float is fantastic! I spent a 1 1/2 years aboard the US Coast Guard Cutter Storis in 1966-67. We patrolled the Being Sea and the Gulf of Alaska and we would often find these glass balls washed ashore on remote beaches. The replica you made is wonderful.

I have a very long way to go before I have the skills to undertake a scratch build like this. The beautiful job you are doing on this boat is inspirational for me though.

I decided at this time, it will be my first diorama. So I went to the internet and the monograph and I saw a couple a good ideas. I went to prepare de basa as a beach with sand, taking care of the leveling, not uniform surfaces and so....

now.... let’s start to see how is going to look forward.... but before we need to work in the beach capstan ....

Beach capstan.... from the monograph I took the plans. I realize the scale is not right. So for this 1:12 I decided to take the internal plan which is 1:24 ....

Very evocative    👍

I am just wandering, why you made the bowsprit sticking out beyond the base-board, where it is prone to damage, while there is a lot of empty space on the other side of the board ...

This build just keeps getting better and better, Hellmuht. I'm enjoying following your build very much.

Your build inspired me to buy a copy of the Ancre monograph for the St Caterina. I think it will be very interesting to see all the steps you have taken to build your model even though I'm not skilled enough to undertake such a project yet. I'm also interested in dioramas and I recently ordered a book on making them: Waterline Dioramas by Justin Camarata. I ordered the book from Sea Watch Books: https://www.seawatchbooks.com/ItemDisplay.php?sku=107002

Continued good luck with your build.

Sorry .....  I don’t get it.   Please explain me a little more

The baseboard seems to be long enough for the whole boat, but you placed it onto the baseboard so that the bowsprits sticks out beyond it. This seems to be a bit risky arrangement, the bowsprit can easily be damaged.

P.S. Is your mother-tongue German ? Your Name seems to indicate that ...

But you are completely right. I have been thinking about it

some days I think to take it out and put it aside...some others I think to take it out and leave it inside the boat....and some others I think to leve it as it is........😄😄

I was wondering, because of the somewhat unorthodox spelling of your first name. I is normally spelled Helmuth or Helmut ...

This is going to be my previous last post.......😒.  The model is “already finished”......You never finish a diorama.... you have to abandon it!!!!

The beach capstan usually were anchored to a stone wall.  This was necessary to provide resistance at the time they pull the boat to the beach.......

I used “nativity” technique to create it......
