Nenad:  I used a ponce wheel for my riveting;  However, I saw a technique (I can't remember where) where the modeler cut a block of wood the size of a plate, and drilled holes for pins to make a "stamp" to stamp out identical rivet patterns for each plate.

Nice looking tests so far!

Hi Nenad, you are too much man !!!!  Bravo on the innovative idea for your rivet making device.  No watch gears, no clock gears but cigarette lighter gear.  Who would would have come up with that idea?????  Nenad of course.  Ingenious!  Now show us the results with that great machine.

Piet, I like to play ...  ;)

And obviously I try to find a way to delay start of coopering in endless experiments ...

Just kidding...

Just don't want to get in situation to remove all this little parts because something I didn't think/rethink enough

BTW, considering in mind that I make this tool in hurry and impatience ( as almost all I have done  :( ) wheel is swaying left and right, and I must make another one  :P

That is what you get when you are under the influence of modeling.  My advice is to take a break and have a glass of wine then take a nap.  Then you will be ready for another round. ;)

Nenad, I can just picture you taking a break, smoking a cigarette and looking at your lighter, thinking to yourself, Hey that might be just what I need! (And I see from your other post that is just what happened.)

I love your build so far and your sense of humor. Nicely done.

This evening I went downstairs earlier ( at the risk of nagging why I didn't water flowers) because I want to have a time to do something before Game of Thrones.

One more idea bumped to my head about riveting tool, and I want to try it. This time, lined needles without heads, glued with superglue in wooden holder

post-4738-0-42207800-1402335879_thumb.jpg

post-4738-0-76336500-1402335895_thumb.jpg

And here are tests with yesterday made rivet tool, today made tool, and made with hand pricking with one needle as on first tests I made

post-4738-0-77308200-1402335933_thumb.jpg

post-4738-0-57213300-1402335860_thumb.jpg

Conclusion - with rounded tool, line is much visible than a rivets. With needle tool - nedlees are not in line, so I can make better line with one needle and my sense

And decision was made - to start (finaly)

And I started, and this are first appointed "cooper" strips 4x10 mm, riveted manually each one. I chose that dimension of slices to assume riveting, and to be small enough as much similar to the scale it can be

post-4738-0-65333800-1402335919_thumb.jpg

Not bad.

There is macro photo, of details.

But, in this scale, when I am watching whole model from usual distance, rivets are not visible individually. But - riveting , in my opinion, will give some kind of soul to whole project of "coopering" Her hull. A little bit of changing of light reflection, or ... I do not know what exactly or I have no words to describe... but I am definitively sure that riveting must be done on her dress

Her Majesty is quiet for now, taking her breath waiting to see how all of this will look like ...

Nenad, usually I have a very hard time with repetition,  so I'm surprised at myself for completing the copper.  (All I have left is the rudder).  My advice is to plate the keel, then plate evenly on each side.  I always balance my sides, hull planking, deck planking, or coopering.  Port side one row, then stb side one row..  I used calipers to check that my progress was even on both sides from the center of the keel.

Beer, and good soft music is great for this process after work, (and dinner, when everyones' going to sleep).  Build a good waterline jig (I didn't :( ) and always check and double check.

By the way, Too much beer + Fatigue = Removing Tiles the next day!  Stop work when you get a little buzz or when you feel your second wind.  If you feel the need to keep going, walk away and do some research to wind down.  And as always:  Hmmmmmm....

Great work, my friend;  Your work keeps my build alive..

Thx Bob

There is no danger with beer, and any other alcohol ... natural brake ... when I feel that is starts to catch me, there is no way to keep on drinking ... consequences of earlier sport life with zero alcohol ... I suppose

There were some sketch on that theme ... in situations when my natural "alcohol sense" failed

Many years ago, I was with client in hiss office (great football club) and we were celebrating successfully finished property job ... they all liked Whiskey , I ... if I have to, I can drink it with much ice and a bit of alcohol ... they opened some extra whiskey (10 years old or something similar) ... I drunk my glass full of ice and with little Whiskey, and nothing happened. I feel nothing. Head clear and bright. After a while, I went forward to another job, leave stadium, and in the middle of parking place on which all main offices look to, on wide opened space, my legs just canceled obedience, and I stopped ... Head was clear competely , but my legs ... not forward, not backward, not up, not down, absolutely nothing. So, I was standing there about 5 minutes ( very very long time in that position on that place) stoned. And stoned. And still stoned. Another car passed, "big faces" who knows me asked me if I need some help ... What a shame ...   somehow I get my *** to car, and sited there another 20 minutes to collect myself, and to be safe in traffic ...

They joke me even today about my drink resistance ...

BTW

Maybe I ll tomorrow find watch gear ... There is still live old watch factory which does not make watches, but make some other precise mechanical instruments, and I call them today, and they have little gears, and tomorrow I ll visit them ... wish me luck

I do not understand first two pictures of bow coopering. Are coopering plates following planks or waterline ?

It seems as two options ?

On the other side, on photos, plates are following waterline, in your model - plates are following planks line ?

In stern, also situation is different considering Campbell and Lubbock ( "Basil Lubbock - China clippers" 1914) , also pictures

Hmmm again

Just like you said, Nils.

Encouragement from you, as much experienced master builder, and also from Roland Vlahović modeling champion from Croatia (see his work on https://www.facebook.com/roland.vlahovic?fref=nf , or just on Google pictures look for Roland Vlahović) are so significant to me to do things on right way, even with presence of consequences left after earlier mess I did.

Nice and proper details which will follow next stages of my building can mask (?) - (I hope so) this and lead to the really nice model for my living room. Today I intend to do many tests with "poncewheels", so pictures will follow

After sleepless night ( drive Princese 25 km to Her party about 22,00, and picked her up about 03,00 - She was dancing whole night with 15 cm heel on sandals, and stayed without legs) and after hard day on job, I have some sleep, and work, and went down to make some tests

Earlier today, I remembered that there was old watch factory INSA in town, run on Internet and find it still exist, but no watches to make today. Today they make different precise measuring instruments in which little gears are used, so I went there , and ... I got three little gears to try .... ( payed nothing ). Another interesting faces when I was describing what I need and why ... but they were very kind

Notices about tests:

1. I didn't cut slices to much precise for test purpose, also didn't give my best to align them

2. Material is self adhesive plastic foil with "metal color layer"

3. I have not made jig jet, so tried "from hand", so some lines are curved

4. I am not sure what will be visible on pictures, so I attach scanned version with explanations, also particular photos

5. sorry for my bad handwriting, I use for writing only PC almost 25 years

6. dimension of slices are 4x10 mm

Nenad,

To answer one of your unanswered questions... the coppering should follow the water line and the plank runs can go below the waterline as well as above it.

Nenad; Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner;  Mark answered the question.  My copper follows the waterline irregardless of the planking beneath.  And I agree with test #9.  Also, the first copper picture refers to ships like the US Constitution and HMS Victory, not the sleek lines of a clipper  like the Cutty in picture 2.

Great job!
