everyone is fearful of the day when the build proceeds upward {and outward}.    on ships of this nature......especially!  if the work is complete on the outside of the hull,  perhaps a cradle fastened to a large pine board,  with a protective railing built around the bow,  would ease your fears.  then you could work from aft to bow,  without too many mishaps.   of course,  sleeves would still need to be buttoned

 

I'm not being funny.........if I were doing one of these ships,  this is probably what I would do.......it would most likely happen to ME!

101 pages of posts!!  My I have been away a long time.  But you also build like a madman.   I'm glad to see that you placed the ring around the top of the rudder.  I was worried about the sea water getting in to hull when the ship gets pooped at sea!   Nice detail!

 

Look forward to checking out your progress over the past 6 months when I get home from my continued travels next week.

Nenad;  this is why I have not installed the whisker booms on the catheads yet.  The cats as they stand, are pretty strong.  I also will not install the boomkins until rigging is well under way...  Bulwarks were bad enough to deal with when I was planking:  ( 1.  Plank a bit.  2.  fix cracked bulwarks.  3. repeat...)

Marc, it is good to see you again. I know how you feel, I was in same situation last two month. Ok, not exactly, 2 of 5 working days, and only 200 km distance .

 

Dangerous of sea water stays - there are eight windows on Her, but - without glass. I have done my best, but windows are too small for me to make some glass imitation

Ok, I could not work last week. Today Hothead was finally packed in temporary accommodation in Novi Sad, and a new life for Him started. After we return home, Princess was not here (some of her Hip-Hop seminars and battle, whatever it is) ... House is empty ... and we have to adapt to this new situation ... even with two skype contacts this afternoon ...  Lunch, napping, drink a coffee with Admiral, and finally went down to shipyard and Her ... She welcomed me pretty grim, but She was silent

 

I decide to start with windows on bow space,

 

Transferred position from C-plans, drill little holes, wide them to scale, and then question arise - them look like little flattened rings, and have to be a little "older" than a hull surface - and - how to hell to make them ?

 

Think Nenad, think ... after a while and some time spent sniffing between materials in garage, I found little rounded wooden strip 4mm in diameter

 

I drilled central longitudinal hole, and thinned it by hand  to about 3 mm diameter

 

 

Then carefully cut rings 1-1,5 mm wide, and glued them to position

 

After glue hardened, with Einhell I shaped holes ... I must admit that putting some "glass" into openings on such a scale is a too big bite for me

 

After sanding and finish with 400 sandpaper, first layer of black acrylic

 

 

and ta-da-da ...

To see what I have done and to compare with photos, I opened one of Matt`s photos I uploaded to G-drive

 

 

Position - OK

 

Dimension - relatively - Ok. Can be a little smaller, but, this is also over my possibilities ( or I am lazy to try)

 

Color - failure

 

And I give it first color repair

 

 

 

Ok, need a bit more of yellow ( gold?) to add

 

But, I become little nervous, and decided that this is all for today

Very nice portholes!  Very  creative solution to the problem.

I wouldn't worry too much about the color.  The first time I visited the Cutty they were painted black.

I can't tell from the old photos if they were polished brass back during her wool years.  I guess that they are back to polishing the brass from your photos.

Considering that I ALWAYS rather discover hot water than walk on elephant path, even I am beginer, that is exactly reason I more like scratch than kit building

Great job on the port holes. I have a problem, the plans and kit I have do not show any port holes should I put the in? Great fun following all the posts I feel I am getting to know you folks

All kit plans have their unique simplification, so somewhere stanchions on deck are missing, somewhere stanchions are wooden, etc etc

On the other side, in different parts of Her long history, CS had different look. You can find Her with portholes all along the hull from bow to stern, and with only four per side as today She look

So, answer to your question depends only of your ambition, and decision to follow plans of kit in all points, or you want something more. Personaly, I decided to flow Campbell plans and photos I can find and still do not know where I ll be on the end. There are differences, and when I bump in nowhere, decision is made by actual inspiration of that moment

Of course, you can chose accurate historic look, but - in which period ? Tea trade, wool trade, Ferreira look, school ship look, before or after fire ... at one moment you must cut this endless rope of questions and make a decision

And that individual decisions give personal touch and unique look of any particularly ship model

While contemplating glass in the portholes I thought of model railroad water. We accept a shiny surface as water because it is the right color and shiny, not because we touch it and it is wet. So, what you might need is a black shiny surface. if the "glass" is painted black and then covered with something clear and shiny you would probably have a window. I am thinking of a clear gloss liquid like varnish or clear gloss paint, or does the admiral have clear gloss finger polish? I have yet to do my portholes... all need to do is remember this when I get to that point.

so true about instructions Nenad.......they are simplified.   some detail has been omitted......it's up to the modeler,  if they want to put it on their build.   makes for a more interesting model,  in my opinion 

 

for the portholes and windows.......have you looked in the sewing section of craft stores.....or even hardware stores?   I have these eyelets for shoes,  belts {and other things}.  they come in all sizes,  but I only have two sizes that would work well with it.    a few weeks ago,  I was down in the cellar,  looking through the cabinets the landlord stores his supplies.  I found a nice sconce light to replace the one in our laundry room...........and I ran across a box full of eyelets........all different sizes!    they would do well for hawse holes,  port holes, sheave holes.......god knows what else!

 

what you did to make them is pretty cool.......it worked quite well,  and really adds to the hull's beauty.   for the glass,  I use Testor's 'window maker and cement'  for plastic canopys.   it dries clear,  and is almost 100% see through.  at that size,  you could also use white glue.......it will dry to a smoky window finish.  not see through,  but it will give you the look.

Slow forward to mooring pipes - outside look. After half a hour sniffing through home, garage and shipyard, and after some experiments, I was not much smarter...what to use ... elypse shape is significant ... the smartest approach I can get is to reply technique I used for portholes ( windows)

And here is first one, three more to go

BTW ... glasses for windows ... is there any sense when inside diameter is aobut 1,5-2 mm ?

Nenad;  you've seem to really master the porthole/mooring hole scratch build... I took the easy way out with my "non-elliptical"  mooring pipes.

 

Now I am doing the "hmmm" thing again...

Attorney strike still lasts, so I am at home, with plenty of time. Weather turn to rain with low temperature ("Winter is coming"), first activation of home heating system done, thinking about Hothead and his first move in-move aut ( flat changing) ...

BTW , can anybody tell me what is their purpose on sail ship?

Opening question - what material to use ? Them are iron made. I decided to use wood because I do not have (?) tools for precise metal/alum cutting



Rails had to be thinned a bit, and first billboard sit well on its position



Preliminary painting and a little touch of very thinned black with little drop of gold to get a little "metallic" shine
