Vlad, great job on your quarter gallery! It's really nice to watch it come together piece by piece. The stain you used has an excellent tone. What tint is it?

Thanks a lot Ron, appreciated.

Im glad you like the color and curious about it. Its asphaltum, https://thefinishingstore.com/blogs/news/asphaltum-a-forgotten-finishing-gem

i know many dont like it as its possibly never dries completely, but I use it extensively for detailing work. It covers all warm excellent shades of wood and its transparent. Glazing with it is pretty much used in woodworking still as much as in painting. I use simple artistic color like https://www.royaltalens.com/en/catalog/rembrandt-oil-colour/oil-colour-paint-asphaltum-414-40ml-tube/

You can pretty much mimic Chucks laser black lines in molding to the point you wont recognize which is which if you scrape it to same size scraper. I always wipe off content with cloth so it leaves nonblotching surface. Boxwood is literally painless...I would not use it on blotchy woods like boxwood but its possible. and take my condolences that you had to replank. :) hope it pays off.

Good moring folks.

I halted  any progressing on chapter 3, and focused on curing the blotches on hull....they stepped away plain ugly.  I spent a week on it... I possibly made few mistakes after 220 sanding mostly not sanding hull perfectly with few places leaving glue so varnish didnt apply evenly and not having proper brush and working with clothes from the start I happen to blotch specially bow part....Lime or basswood does not particularly like staining - and I am not fan of any commercial available stain product also not the shades or outcomes it produces. I was quite satisfied but bow is a critical part that I was not able to run off of blotches. And I cannot live with that awfulness on hull. Unfortunately I dont know product that would even out blotches if someone has experiences I would be happy if you can share those...the point of multiplying darker and darker coats will result in just darkening blotches and at the end mess will multiply. So i had to sand off....completely. :) here is the outcome Im defintiely more happy  / . It  alsways goes like this. Eye forgives a lot. Than take camera and pic and look. if it looks OK just be sure its not OK and try harder and third time you take pics ....it will be OK. There is no blotch I can see by eyes, but camera can see it. I consider coloring wood one of a hardest part of woodcraft, but i always listen to urge to experiment. according to slogan - best learn mistake = own one. I m sure  you would agree that was necessary to correct those. These are pics before and after correction. v.

Vlad, you are a craftsman! I think your Winnie can go out dancing now and to a queen's reception very soon! Seriously, she's looking beautiful.

What scrapers did you use for your moldings?

Ron

Ron you are an angel but I hold my breath as I dont think much of my skill or my winnie there is plenty of mistakes but anyway. we are picky about it. i feel still pain for few mistakes i could avoid but at the end i tell myseldf im proud i planked properly despite of mistakes...  ;( but i grow on her as at this moments it would be about thousands upon thousands time i took her in hands ! and we all know it means a lot for us.

oh by the way hat happened recently. i tried to polish and polish planking at the stern forgetting its already so thin - guess what happened? yea i sanded off small hole ! into planking hru 2 planks. just near molding covering imperfections.... . you can imagine pain i was going thru :((((

no magic here Ron - . i used standard artesania latina scrapers...i got new one...tthose are little off beams measurments so i just sanded off from them to make scrapers smaller....

i already started working on stern part and formed different columns so you will see hopefully soon. ;)

thanks. v.

there is an update on sternpost part. here is how it turned out with whitish windows...

i guess i little drowned side windows so i could have posture upper molding a bit higher, but it could have been far worse anyway :) ..so long part 3 for me. as i dont have figures im done :)

I painted black scarf around boat glossy, as greenwich protoype :) better or worse for you ? :)

first pic is carulean still not quite dry. but its easy on eyes i guess enough. i had to repaint darker one.

no matter how long i tried my very best on sternpost. i cant better :) picked very simple column pattern , sorry for that . didnt i promise in november  i m goona catch up with you folks...?. :D

now long break ...but i will enjoy your progress... thank you all.

Folks, small update from what I could do without parts 4&5, I decided to work gunports. I made such thing first time, it was very enjoyable. what do you say ?I have to finish another half.  I tried to make them with apropriate size but  im a bit sad that hinges are little wider and therefore  more prominent as they should be, but they match perfectly round openings so they open nice tightly. Im thinking to make another side smaller, wel.. also made checkered board ahead getting inspiration from Matthias Beckmann, i like it without painting- its thin baswood. only black is painted.  meanwhile one weekend / made of  inlayed woods/strips... tiles are little smaller than scale i will see if i keep them. Those hinges look very good.  Well done.  If that was the first time you made them it is an outstanding job....

Thanks Chuck,  well strips I had were little thicker so I thinned them and I think it was important otherwise they would be too thick for windows, but they are a bit rougher on surface. but better than thick. I must say all process is way tougher and complex to fit fine than it seems..

Few little updates on winnie.   My first proper grating. A lot to be desired but learning the craft.i put more glue than should  so i had to remove it afterward. Point is to sand stick just so they fit snuggly. I hope next 3 remaining will be better.  I was so happy after sanding.one square fell of I have to insert some square.  ...i really like those small masts platforms. Few sanding and from simple piece of wood there is nice joinery. And yes great cabin there is....all in her carulean ...well ...sort of. Point is. I prefer Chucks natural color of wood ...reason of painting. ? Simply to mask some bad sanding of transome. So there is nothing to be proud of . But. Even learing to paint is part of craft. :) and finally...

I must say the chaptwr 4 is pretty difficult but so interesting. :) learning to work with small instruments and not to spit glue over as after cannot be painted.. Planking will wait few months and then chapter 5 and leisurily enjoying Chucks progress for autumn shopping.

Folks, its been some time I checked few progresses on yours , happy to see some updates...... I have few small updates though. First, finally my batch of PEAR wood for decking is about to arrive this week so I am pretty excited. after i recovered from captains cabin overkill, I moved to the rudder and bow and stained gratings which I like.

I think planking deck will take a long while i dont want to rush it, so I wont post anytime soon, and finally I have to order those carved stuff, i should have  a long ago as pointing figurehead now will be surprise but thats me...obvious. one thing. I am glad I didnt go for Chuck proper way to put paper on those cheeks...I realized I would have messed up gluing tiny papers on round wood. It is difficult part for me... Instead, I labored., FIrst I painted those with pastel blue, but was not satisfied, with color shade  and it was not permanent. I mixed oil colors where is it a breeze to catch any shade of blue in a spot...and voila I am quite happy. I still have to work on  clean outcome of work and should have painted blue before gluing both sides but...I managed to clean it with turpentine thankfully... I must say there is visible joint of those two timbers without covering it with paper.,distracting at first glance as it draws sight to it but I think with ornamentals it will be different......but there is one on old prototype as well. depends on how you look at it. I managed to make one realy fine but other is not that perfect which is killing me but at the end i cant have it perfect. one important thing. angling is really important with these ,,....and i didnt dare to drill holes. I will leave it black. and there will never be an anchor going thru :) . happy with black paint telling what it is..started working on rudder lately.....here it goes...

Guys, why noone warned me that this will be toughest ? . I mean toughest.

Im glad that i skipped this in hull...i ruined few planks before made it watchable for myself. But it was barely watchable  closeup. I ruined cuple and made only 2 planks for entire day !!!!  Third went better with some workaround. I feel  Its constant battle with myself and winnie. I dont wanna loose it. Its really beautiful when done well but  Who invented that  ? Well my first of these...thankfully done! Yay. Now Only thinning planks. I think im done.:) i hope worst is over. Line is straight so contiuing should be without pain. I made center plank thin as didnt have different measured of planks... .

i guess id need an advice / help guys.

as you can see from the pics Floor looks horrible untreated. there are spots after sawblade and  planks are not uniformly thick.

what do you suggest i should do? sand it of some sort i guess. i normally sand it 100 to 200 gritt and thats it. after i apply hardwax oil. thats all.

what comes to my mind i did once was scraping surface after sanding with razor blade which worked on walnut quite well maybe i will try that as well...not sure.

By the way i think it eas last time i worked with pear wood. its so breakable and tough across the grain ( obviously) but nothing for cutting planks by hand. ill stay with poor lime, baswood whatever despite of fuzziness.

but lobe love the tone of oiled pear wood so once im done i need to treat it somehow...

Rustys pear planks are gorgeous. do you any proved suggestion please?

thank you All.

Vlad, you cut those planks by hand? I'm so far away from where you are so I don't have any idea how to treat the deck. Perhaps making a small trial deck

with a few planks glued to some stiff card. I like the idea of scraping as it doesn't lift up the fuzz. I love the look of your Winnie and really enjoy following along!

Ron, thanks for reply. Those are bought planks. i dont have saw to cut those. 1 mm thick so I can take off of them with calm mind but well. good idea to put aside few planks and try first... as you can spot I already tried to sand off of that center part but its quite firm wood to sand. on the positive side, it doesnt fuzzy at all so it should be beautifully clean ans smooth when done right. i think sanding with 200 grit should do. im a bit hesitant scrape it as some wood is along some across grain. only if very lightly. i am about to get new sanding paper tmw but still have lots to plank. Thanks for stopping by, i tried something disturbing at first   going with pear deck but for me it doesnt  distract colorwise. will see. :)

Vlad,

Your deck is off to a good start!

Try sanding the planks to the width with a long flat sanding board or stick rather than cutting or sanding by hand, you’ll get much cleaner seams. And test fit several times before you finally glue down, that way you can make several adjustments. Then once all the planks are glued down give them a nice sand with a small sanding block to take them all down to an even height.
