Hello,

Matti, Ferit, and Zy thanks for your nice comments, always appreciated. Mark you are the lucky one, yes your kit included those complex looking braces. I really like the BB version of this ship. Good choice.

--------

An update; had the last of couple days off, and my sweetheart is out so I can very comfortably make noise with the dremel {and my music}(:-) I painted and installed the bow figures. I am very happy to be DONE with painting those tiny little creatures.

I wanted to also add the small pedestals, and small frames behind each figure as seen in the 1/10th, but there is no space, the pedestals would then hang down lower than that timber upon which those little feet are now perched. Looks better that way. Pics are self-explanatory.

A couple of thoughts;

They were lined up by height, with the tallest closest to the deck.

The blue figure at the tip has since been straightened out a bit. One might think that he was trying to dive off of the ship before it sank.

----------------------

Now onto those darned gratings. I did complete the most forward one. I'm comfortable with the results so far. I will post when completed.

Again I want to thank all of who have been so kind with your encouraging words, and thanks as well to those of you just looking in. Your time spent at my build is a personal kindness, thank you.

Regards,

Michael

Guys,

Hi. I need some help. As I have mentioned I am rebuilding the gratings on the weather deck. Note that on the enclosed pics of the 1/10th each grating spar seems to have some nails. I don't see any of that in the 1:1 pics, nor have I ever noticed this on any other really super detailed model of any ship.

So the question is, I'm thinking of adding the "look" of these nails on my new gratings, Mmmm would that be correct ??. Thanks in advance for any help with this question.

/Michael

Nigel, and Jan,

I was thinking about it a bit more, and the question, for me, then became; When these were needed to be removed would deck hands remove each slat individually, or pull up the entire frame at once?

It seems to me (without any reference) that it would be too labor and time intensive to remove each, slat by slat. So I'm assuming that the 1/10th is correct. The grating frames, in fact, had the cross members attached with nails. And could then be quickly put back into place.

Nigel your SOS will serve as a sage reference, though I know that they lived in different centuries (:-) I will also try to replicate only one "nail" per cross member. We shall see.

Thanks for your feedback gents. I'll post an update when this retro-build section when completed.

/Michael

The new made grating has no visiable nails as far as I can tell. If there are nails, they are so small, they dont show up on the pic and not as prominent as on the 1:10. I hold the new made details on the real ship higher then the 1:10. Its easy the best model made, but it has a few errors. I found a picture of one on the Kalmar Nyckel replica and it has no nails either. Landstöm has a drawing without them, but he could of course have left them out.

Would they be visiable in 1:75?

But I enjoy builds done with artistic freedom, its like a signature only very, very few would notice at all. If you like them, go for it.

/Matti

Edit: you could search for pics of the Batavia replica. I think they would have those details right, and to me it looks as they based a lot off their construction on Vasa. The pics Ive seen only show covered gratings though.

Hi Michael,

Firstly, what you will do, I am sure, will be attractive and nice...

Secondly, I like the view of nailed pieces ( one of my regrets about my build )...

Thirdly, Matti's suggestions deserve highly consideration ( as always )...

Fourthly, these are my humble thoughts and I am not a knowledgeable man about model ship building but only who follows the plans and his imaginations...

After your reference pictures of the post #217 and through many other pictures in the web, I realized that Corel's gratings - as in my Berlin - have different and wrong shapes. I think from now on, the space between two members and the thickness of each member should be almost the same... That should be like a chessboard I suppose...

But after Corel's gratings, the distance between two members almost doubles the thickness of a member. If you are thinking of nailing with two nails, you should consider this situation... You may change them with the gratings of another manufacturer... ( I was late now for my build but if I had been thinking as today I would change them... )

Cheers Ferit! Michael, I agree with your logic that they should need something to hold together if they where to be moved. Still I cant see any nails there. But my eyes could be tricking me on this one, as I never managed to see the nails holding the deck planking on the original either, and they should be there right? They must be rather small and blend with the planks. Ive been wondering about these invisiable nails for a while, as they are easy to spot on ships like Kalmar Nyckel. To me it looks like Vasa at the museum is not chaulked (maybe to preserve her?) and that could explain this? Or the low light is tricking the eye and the camera. If anyone knows it would be great!

Here are pics I took of the weatherdeck, I couldnt see any nails on my visits to the museum either:

Guys,

Thanks for your input.

Ferit, I have also noted that the gratings that are kit supplied, purchased un-assembled, or in plastic ALL seem to have the wrong timber proportions. To be supplied in the correct shape would probably make them too fragile.

Matti your pics. are great, it appears as though the re-built 1:1s don't have cross nails, so I got curious.

Jan, great pic. of the Batavia grating, that is one pic. I did not have of that ship. I will proceed with my idea to include cross member nails. I will try it on the most forward grating and see how it looks.

The Batavia is interesting in that it also sank on its maiden voyage in 1628, though under very different circumstances. Here is a nice model of this boat along with some historical info.

Hi Michael

I recommend Caldercrafts 1mm grating kits. These are what I am using in my build to replace the oversize kit ones. They equate to 75mm square holes on your build which is correct to the original. You may have to join them together though as they only come 33mm square.

Nigel,

Thank you very much for your suggestion, as well as your time in thinking of this for me.

As it turns out I have purchased some gratings from Amati. (Pre-assembled Size:50 x 50 x 2 mm; 2 x 2 x 3/32 inches ) I am currently assembling the grating frames as well as cutting to size the new gratings themselves.

I am using the 1/10th, as well as some of the other Vasa builders, and the 1:1 photos as references. The finished effort will certainly improve on what I had originally installed; those were totally inappropriate.

I marvel at your work, and so appreciate your continued kindness, as well as your constructive comments on my build. I would have responded sooner, but I have been away for a few days.

Regards,

Michael

Here is the latest retro-update. When I first started this Corel kit, I was very ignorant in general regarding 16th century nautical accuracy as I was putting this boat together. In fact I was uninformed in general.

I have, since joining MSW, had a steep learning curve. And I am now much more aware of what I am doing and how "things" should look.

In that regard, the weather deck gratings needed to be removed and replaced with examples that were appropriate for this ship. As well as properly built. So my rebuilding continues. I ordered some new gratings as I could not correctly fit those that were removed.

I further decided to follow the 1/10th example by simulating cross member nails in the gratings. After much detail work this is how it turned out. I'm much more satisfied with this latest fix. Though I do still see errors that I could have circumvented had I been  more knowledgeable, and better skilled (for example early in the build, I would have correctly tree-nailed the deck, and recessed the lower and upper cannon openings).

Moving on...I took Matti's suggestion and installed a cover over one of the grating frames (thanks nice idea)

I apologize for the, too many photos in this update. I may have lost my sense of proper perspective. I personally love to look at a lot of photos here at MSW, so I took some liberties with this post. It also occurred to me that many of you whom I follow are very informative with your notes. From which I have become a better modeler. So this post will include more written details.  Again thanks for looking in.post-735-0-02161500-1379182162_thumb.jpgoriginal grating installation

Thanks Matti, getting there. Now I will actually move forward.....

PS: I now have to give up on getting the photos in the right order. I numbered them, I added notes to each one, I loaded then IN order. And they still came up all weird half way through. I know that a moderator some time back gave me some hints. Didn't seem to help.

I wonder if the MSW mainframe is not so happy communicating with Macs (:-)

Michael,

Let's see if I can help with the picture issues....

First load the pictures using "Choose Files".

Then, put your curser where you want the picture.  (#1)

Then click "Add to post". (#2)

If you don't they can end up being rather random.  You can do this up to the maximum limit per post (which I think is 10). Or maybe it's per "upload"... I'm not 100% sure as it's been a long time since I uploaded a pile of pictures.
