WW1 8 inch howitzer and tug by King Derelict - Roden 1/72 - FINISHED

Recommended Posts

I found a jr of Tamiya khaki and that looks a lot more like I think it should be. I brushed it on leaving the greener Mig paint in the folds and quite like the look. I did find that the puttees and 1902 webbing and pouches should be khaki too, I might lighten them a bit as I redo to allow for fading and washing.

Details and washes to follow.

Fun time. I mixed up some craft acrylic with white glue and some ceramic dust from my Aedes Ars castle kit and daubed it onto the wheels of the artillery train and the tracks of the Whippet. I plan to use some more of this to blend the models onto the base.

I added some mud into the chutes below the upper track section

I'm still playing with the tarps for the Whippet. I want to get them on before adding the cans at the back. They are going to make the tank a bit delicate.

I finished the tarped loads and the cans and attached them to the Whippet. I like the cluttered look. I think that is going to be all I add. The picture showed a couple of bags hanging off the back but I don't like my attempts at that. So now everything gets a coat of matt clear and can be added to the base.

Thank you so much OC.

I think I'm very close to being able to add the vehicles. Still a little way off with the figures.

Exactly.  I had a friend who said two things every artist needs.... a critic and gun.  When the critic says it's finished, he uses the gun on the artist.

Happy New Year to Everyone. i hope it brings a lot of good things

I added a canister under the tarp on the Whippet alongside the tin helmet. I made some tie downs out of scrap PE for the ropes securing the tarps and decided that was enough fiddling about. Everything got a dose of clear matt coat and once they were dry I added the vehicles to their final positions on the base.

I made up some mud with a mixture of white glue, brown craft acrylic, ceramic dust and a little water. This was used to blend the vehicles onto the base. So far so good.

There is no excuse I; now need to get serious with the figures.

I touched up a few places on the base and painted the black edges. I dunno why I always end up leaving that until the end; it would be much smarter done at the start. An order to TAP Plastic now for the case parts.

I continued with the figures. With some varied shades of khaki and some dark washes I am fairly happy with the majority of the figures but I am struggling a bit with the faces. The detail is poor to start with and on one I did a poor job of scraping the flash off. I'm trying to build up shades of skin tones but there really isn't a lot of detail to catch the washes.

The three marching figures are not too bad and the seated figure is OK but the rest are disappointing. The officer has almost no facial features

If nothing else this has given me a new appreciation of the figure painting excellence of Jack @Jack12477 and OC @Old Collingwood.

I'm still a bit surprised at the lack of options for 1/72 scale WW1 figures. Given the level of devastation it always seemed to be an underrepresented war

You have  done  very well  with  those figures  Alan,   1/72  is  just  so  small  to get  any detail  out  of the  figures,   28mm  is  the limit  to me   -  you have done  a  fine job.

I agree with OC, Alan. The molds for those 1:72 figures don't give much detail on the faces. The figures look good.  1:35 scale is smallest I will attempt with figures.

Thank you very much OC. I just read an interesting article about the quality of 1/72 figures which said Hat figures dominated the scale and were generally poor quality in terms of detail. The Emhar offerings were considered better but marginalized by Hat. I imagine they would look good en masse for wargaming.

Thank you very much Jack. You are right. There isn't enough detail to work with. The figures will be deep in the display so I'll add the matte coat and continue.

I have a couple of Verlinden 120mm figures on the shelf which I'm keen to attempt especially after watching the technique video you posted recently. Many Thanks for that

Verlinden is the Master, one of my favorites. His books were very instructional. Two of my armor dioramas contain his kit molds. I have 2 more of his kits to work into a diorama sometime

Doing a bit of catching up, you're doing wonders with the dio, the figures look great to me.

I did a whole box of the Airfix 1:72 Waterloo highlanders 30 odd years ago,  I recall I just did a flesh colour on the face,no extra detail, but then they were placed in square when based up, so difficult to see much detail anyway.

Can't wait to see the troops on the base!!

Non ship:  SBD-3 Dauntless 1:48 Hasegawa -FINISHED

The 120 mm kits I have look very good. Are they still in production? Sprue Brothers seem to be the only people stocking them and their choices seem to be diminishing

Thank you very much Edward. I remember the Airfix Highlanders. I remember my attempts at the tartan were not very convincing.

I did a dry run with the figures on the base nd I think its working out so I'll fix them tomorrow.

I believe Francois Verlinden retired, or passed away, some time ago and his factory in Belgium (????) closed and no one picked up his molds, or the molds were destroyed (???). I found 2 of his original kits in my local hobby store when they closed and my son located 2 more online someplace. Some of his books may still be available but I think his kits are slowly being sold out.  Shame because he and Shep Paine were two of the best figure and diorama Masters around.  I still have one of Shep's soft cover books on dioramas.

Just read through your log Alan, and what a great diorama you have going here.  Your muddy landscaping looks fantastic, as does the rolling hardware.  Especially like the Whippet and tow vehicle.  Excellent job putting wear on them.

Shep Paine passed from a stroke in 2015, Francois Verlinden retired in 2016 after moving to the US in 2015 and closing down his business, unfortunately all his molds were destroyed....

I used to have an extensive collection of VP, but I sold them all off when they reach premium pricing... Wish I still had them now....

Their books are still widely available especially on Amazon Prime....
