I've had to put my current paper model project on hold for a while, but I'm hoping to start making some progress again soon. In the meantime, I can enjoy watching yours!

Making progress on the bulkheads and the doors:

I’m sort of working on the doors assembly line fashion.

 

I am cutting out the fronts, including the slots in the doors, layering them onto a piece of a box and then cutting out the backs and then layering that onto the door panels after I cut them out.

 

After I get all of them cut out like that, I’ll paint them all forest green.

 

Next, I will make handles and hinges, which are already transferred to cardstock.

 

I’ll make the rivets by indenting them with a pick.

 

Then I’ll paint them black and install them.

 

All doors will be shown open, since I already took the time to make an interior.

 

I’ll finish carving all the door frames after that.

My carving refresher is going fair to middling:

Making progress on the carvings.

I remembered about gluing them down to a board and did so.

 

One of the crowns is nearly done.

 

One crown is about 50% if I can salvage it.

 

The one knot looking thing is cut out and awaiting getting the bas relief cut in it.

 

Most of these carvings will be bas relief, which is not exclusively difficult.

 

I only have three fully 3D carvings to do on this model, one figurehead and two heads that go on bitts.

 

I am a few years out of practice on this sort of work, but that is okay.

 

It is all coming back to me now.

 

After I finish this model, I need to decide between an ironclad (or pre-dreadnought) or a 17th-century Dutch 80-gunner with lots of carvings.

 

Or maybe I’ll just go for broke and build La Soleil Royale or the Sovereign of the Seas.

 

Both of those have lots of carvings that look like fun, and I’ve seen some REALLY nice builds of both vessels, on this forum, that make me really want one.

 

In the case of Sovereign of the Seas, I have the McKay book and the Amati plans, with 3 different sets of carvings between them.

 

Maybe, I’ll just build it all three ways.

 

Plus, I may or may not have bought the game “Greedfall” for the PS4 because of its rendition of the Sovereign of the Seas.

Either way, once I run out of basswood sheets I need to replace them with some pear, boxwood or other tight grained wood to make the carvings on the next model.

 

Also, my Victory needs finishing.  It only has the upper deck detailing, upper head detailing, masting, rigging and sails to go.

Sounds like a lot.  It really isn’t.  I could finish it up in a few months if I really wanted to.

 

Then, I would at least have a completed first rate ship-of-the-line in my collection.

I like the optimism and I envy the sort of time one might have on their hands to be able to finish up the hull, details, and entire rig of a ship of the line in a few months. I’ve been having some Zelda issues lately which have severely hampered my progress, in the spare time I do have, rigging my Badger.

  The Borderlands games for me.

 

The latter day ships of the lines had most of their major fittings below deck.

 

The annoying parts for me are the hammock cranes.

 

Those are one of my least favorite parts to install and set up the netting for (and are actually one of the reasons I don’t typically build build late 18th Century or early 19th Century ships).

 

I need to finish those up on the quarterdeck and work my way forward.

 

I have most of the upper deck structures done, I just have to finalize all the details.

 

It’s just a matter of sitting down and doing it.

 

The masting and rigging are the easy parts for me.

 

Setting up shrouds are difficult for me, but once that is done, it’s just rope work.

 

I bought a full set of rigging fittings for the Victory last year, I just need to use them.

The Admiral bought a small dollhouse kit and asked me to build it for her.

 

She is a doll collector.

 

So, the Revenge will be on a back burner for a bit until I finish building her dollhouse for her.

The Admiral’s small dollhouse is about 90% complete.  

Turns out I’m a lot better at building model ships than building dollhouses.

Truth be told, I’m not too great at wood models.

 

I’m much better with card.

 

I’ll be back to working on the Revenge shortly.

Game back on for the Revenge!

 

I’d show pictures of the dollhouse but let’s just be honest, I’m much better with card, and my gluing is terrible.  

 

That’s one reason why I paint everything and don’t typically try card kits of things like tanks and planes.

 

Now, using the card kit pieces like I’m using the plan sheets for this model, with everything getting replaced and painted, that I can do.

 

Here’s where I’m at with the carvings:

Progress is slow but steady!

 

In other news, I bought the Victory Models HMS Vanguard plan set from Cornwall Model Boats today.

 

Another future project to add to my stash.

16 down, 13 to go:

I have one more crown and one more flower/knot looking piece.

 

All the door frames for the interior bulkheads are done.

 

I have one more stern window frame, 2 quarter gallery doors, 6 fleure de lis and Elizabeth’s monogram remaining.

 

Then I’ll finish up the doors and proceed with the end of deck bulkheads, with the bulk of my carvings completed.

 

I am going to display the model with the doors open because I made the interior.

 

I usually display stuff buttoned up, as in actual usage.

I’ve been having a lot of fun with this build!

Working my way through the last of the quarter badges and door/window frames.

Elizabeth’s monogram is cut out and glued to the carving board for finishing.
 

The crowns and flower/knot carvings are done.  The bulkhead door frames are test fitted to doors.

I learned to carve from the Learn To Carve group project on this forum.

 

For these, I photocopied the parts pieces from the plans onto cardstock.

 

I glued those onto a 1/16” basswood sheet and carved that.

  The resources on this site are absolutely amazing!

 

That group project got me started on carving.

The carvings for this model are all very similar in technique to the ones from that project.

 

I actually referenced back to it when I started carving these.

 

Speaking of which, here is a little more progress:

All door frames are made now.

 

I made one Fleur de Lis.

 

I have one more window frame to go and 5 Fleur de Lis’s to go.
