The lower part of the hull is mostly complete now:

IMG_3932.thumb.jpeg.0632dbcbc1afe031091c6ce7b29c4810.jpeg

The pintles and gudgeons on the rudder needs some minor paintwork:

IMG_3931.thumb.jpeg.1cef0c1081cc38c11f171c574bb5e7c6.jpeg

I need to paint the ones below the waterline that dingy white.

There are a couple places that need touched up in the same fashion, from where the green on the base came in contact with places it should not have, while the paint was still wet.

Then it will be time to complete the gundeck.

The gundeck is nearly ready to be sealed and then closed in:

I will add the final gunport sills after second planking the upper part of the model.

The majority of the gundeck is sealed in now:

I realized tonight, that you would have to boroscope the model to see all the detail work on the gundeck now, to say nothing of the orlop deck, lol.

This is the first time that I have ever made a fully enclosed deck before.

I photocopied the plan sheet for the brass photo etched sheets onto thin cardstock.

IMG_4089.thumb.jpeg.be4bfdfa1d51547e9ff80a3667108d0b.jpeg

I sealed both sides of the cardstock sheets at the parts I am going to use.

The pieces that would have been thin brass, I will most likely just cut out and adjust as needed, like the lanterns above.

The pieces that go to door frame mouldings, the quarter badges and other trim pieces, will be fully glued to wood and be carved as appropriate.

The cardstock should reinforce the wood pieces so they don’t split out as they are being carved.

Here is the main deck with the beams for the next decks in place, with the lanterns:

I’ll finish the transom piece with the stern windows and add that shortly.

The quarterdeck bulkhead pieces have been trimmed off:

IMG_4139.thumb.jpeg.a2e23ce01abb4376926fd53f9205c7cb.jpeg

Working on the stern windows:IMG_4136.thumb.jpeg.f63207c4a93271de9b05f422b31250b5.jpegIMG_4138.thumb.jpeg.521c2f726dad11ca8e23c7388be39164.jpeg

It is a two step process.

I copied the window pieces twice.

Once onto regular paper and once onto cardstock.

I am using the regular paper to make the lattice by cutting out all the holes with a scalpel.

I am making the window frames from the cardstock and then gluing them together.

The finished window looks a lot better in person than in the pictures.

There are three across the stern.

I have two to go.

I traced out the next sets of parts.

So, those will be copied in the near future and glued down to cardstock.

I got my Orel Vasa in the mail today.

That will be fun to modify and build up in 1/64 scale.

I have 4 Orel kits now.

I have a Seahorse De Zeven Provincien coming too.

That will be my first Seahorse model, and it will also be used more as templates than an actual kit.

They will all be a lot of fun to build up.

Working on the next round of fittings:

Looks like a mess, but it is more organized chaos, at the moment, lol.

I am painting the underside of the forecastle deck.

The knighthead will be installed prior to installing the forecastle deck.

Making progress:

I already made a lot of the deck fittings, so I’ve been adding the hardier ones as I go.

The forecastle deck is glued in place because I need to cut the bulkhead tabs off flush with the deck and plank over them like the quarterdeck.

I’m actually a little farther along with the model, but I haven’t paused to take pictures.

I’m currently working on cutting out the rest of the pieces that I traced out and prepping the grating pieces and trim pieces that I copied on the thin card.

Those are going to either get layered onto other card after I carve the details into them, or get glued down to wood and then carved.

Thank you again to this wonderful forum for that carving group project.  It was immensely valuable to me.

Sometime in between, I need to make 2 ladders and get the hatch pieces finalized, to include the aforementioned gratings.

Proof of concept/prototype for the first grating:

IMG_4594.thumb.jpeg.eb2525112cde4c699212d81f680f4c66.jpeg

It still needs cleaned up and painted, but that will do just fine.

This set of plans is very nice.

The trick for the plan sheets for the brass photo-etch is to just photocopy onto thin card and then cut them out.

I made the mistake with the gundeck and orlop deck gratings of cutting out the pieces on the plan and trying to glue them to card.

It didn’t work too well.

But, this is working just fine.

It is fundamentally the same thing I did with the windows I made earlier.

It’s a little tedious, but isn’t everything in this hobby, lol?

That’s part of why this hobby is so relaxing.

I have all the pieces for them printed out and glued to card, so I just need to print them out and paint them.

The plan set came with the decorative friezes already printed out that would have come with the kit.

I do not have the painting ability that some of you do, so I believe that I will use them because I believe that it will look better.

The initial decorations have been added:

I copied these pieces and glued them down to 1mm card to have a perfect fit for the 2mm trim pieces.

Making progress:

The issues with the glue spots will be solved when I seal the parts after making the door frames.

It should be noted that there will be much drybrushing involved in the final detailing of these pieces to create texture.

Here are the end pieces of the decks, some painting and detailing still pending, and all door/window frames, in cardstock, glued to 1/16 basswood, as well as the majority of the quarter badges and Elizabeth I’s monogram:

From the scroll work left over from when I did the learn to carve tutorial on this site, you may assume that I have had this piece of basswood for several years.

By the way, if you would like to learn to carve, the learn to carve tutorial group on this forum is a most excellent resource and way to learn to carve.

It is how I learned to carve.

For the doors, I am cutting out the slots on the cardstock and gluing to thin card from a box, cutting it out and gluing another slotted piece to the back of it.

The handles will be shaped annealed steel wire and the hinges will be cardstock that has already been copied directly from the plans.

The frames and badges will be antique gold by Delta Ceramcoat and the doors will be painted forest green like the ones below deck.
