So I made it home yesterday afternoon. This morning, while chatting with the manager at the hobby shop, it would seem that the guy behind Sylvan Scale Models would like to see some of my progress! I guess I'm the first person he's heard of to attempt what I'm doing... Cool!

As an aside, the Toronto Railway Prototype Modellers annual

Meet will be at Humber college on March 15. I'll have my ship down there (provided I'm not back at work, of course). Let me know if you need more information.

Alright, time for some progress....

Been playing with that nice metal walkway again. I've now got both walkways along the boom installed. All handrails will be applied just before painting as they are fragile and tend to get in the way.

As I am once again waiting on parts, I've also started work on the extra hatches. The first and third are the add-ons, the second and fourth are original. I do intend to leave quite a few open to view the cargo inside, but the first 3 and all the added ones will be closed. The kit provides more than enough covers in both positions, so I'm not worried about running out of hatches.... yet...

Hi Andy,

Walkways look great mate, big improvement with that new mesh. Good idea to leave the railings off although how many straight rails have you seen, most get bashed at some stage.

Looking at the hatches I was wondering how they open up, most of the hatches I am used to were hydraulically operated fore & aft and sat on top of each other, are yours the same or do they open thwart ships?

Keep up this high standard of workmanship mate, she looking real gooooooood.

The hatches on the Stadacona are (were) manual telescoping covers. A step up from wooden board/wedge/tarp covers. The top most covers sit closest to midship, with the succeeding covers progressing outboard. When I get to glueing on the open covers, it will all make sense.

booms/walways look brilliant

Well, I was out of town last week, so there was no progress in the yard to really report. Until this morning. The hull has now reached its full length, and the last remaining deck section has been dry fit. Currently both ends now overhang my desk.... Another day or so and it will be time to break out the green filler putty and go to town....

I'll have some photos at a later date, just thought I would give everyone a heads up ;)

Alright, photos as promised.

The stern anchor pocket is little more than a light baffle on the model. Given the confines of the area, and the limits of actual visibility, not much more is needed. The pillar in the middle is to correct a downwards bow in the deck at that point, and will remain in place.

As I said earlier, all the hull sections are now in place, as well as now the last remaining deck section. There is a considerable ammount of filling and sanding needed in order to clean everything up. Having the hull finished means I can also get to work installing some of the deck fittings, bollards and fairleads and the like. Since they will all start out being painted the same colour as the deck, I'm not worried about work arounds at this time.

Anyway, one more overview shot, from the stern this time.

Yes... she's big.... 4' 8" long...

Wow! She really is big! Looking great Andy!

Looking at the phrase in your signature, I'm now expecting to see some duct tape somewhere on the build.  ;) (Maybe a plaid flannel shirt and some suspenders are in order too?)  :P

She is looking very sharp Andy, that is a lot of styrene looks to be about 5 foot or more in length.

ft, 8inch

Andy, that ship is incredibly large. I'm sure you mentioned it and I'm just blind, but what is her overall length?

Actually, it is in Andy's post, just above the first pic. 4 ft, 8 inch

(or did Andy edit it in afterwards, just to suggest you're blind? ;) )

Thanks everyone, glad you managed to sort of the length thing ;)

I expect her to grow by only another couple of inches when I get around to adding the spear pole and flag staff.

Robbyn, if is spend money on a new desk, I'll have less for tools, parts, and other kits :P

Michael, she's not all styrene. The hull is made from polyurethane resin castings.

It's going to take me a few more days of sanding and filling before I start adding more details, but soon enough I'll get there.
