Hi Augie --- looks like you get quite a bit of flak from the "upper ranks" ... lol...yards look good. I'm working on my Connie, and got the yards for the Main Mast completed and ready to hang on the mast.  Probably going to go ahead and get the Mizzen yards ready before returning to the masts and running rigging.  Maybe I'll get a log up and going over the weekend.  Look forward to seeing your yards hanging on the masts.  Keep up the good work and keep your head low for the incoming.....

Augie,

On the thread issue... the white glue and water mix work. You might have to play with the percentages so maybe 60% glue/40% water?  There's a couple of other tricks.. water-based matte poly lacquer, hairspray.  They will all stiffen the thread.  If it's to get the "curve" right on the hanging part, brush it on in place and let it dry.  The curve should form when it's wet and stay there after it dries.

You are right about playing with percentages.  Popeye and Patrick set me straight on that (no pun intended) and I settled on 50% for those footropes.

I read somewhere here about the hairspray.  Sounds logical.  But it conjures up the image of me standing there with this fire extinguisher sized can of Alberto VO5 blasting away at Syren.  Not a pretty image with a cigarette hanging out of my face.

I believe that is caused by glue, not sure about the hairspray. Admiral did have memory loss but that was mostly selective "mostly".

I will never look at my pump hairspray bottle the same way again! :o Fiberglass hair...hmmmm...doesn't conjure up a great image. :D

As someone with experience I'll add a word of caution with hairspray...humidity will cause the stuff to degrade in a short time. I used it for craft purposes over the years, only to discover that some of the items I sprayed have holes in them and are tacky feeling!!! Especially natural materials like cotton etc.

As someone who has had their eye poked by "fiberglass" hair I would also like to say its dangerous.

Thanks for the tip on its longevity. I will put the bottle back :P

Hi Augie,

Thanks for the kind words. I'm working on finishing my yards, which should be done tomorrow, and then I'll be hanging them on the masts. I'll try to post a log soon, I really would like to document this part, but the "Admiral" had some plans, so it took away from ship building...."Admiral" always gets first shot...Starting a log might take away from construction, so I'm torn about where to spend the time since I'm new to this. I did find my next build..I bought a MS CW Morgan for a decent price and will atempt my first wood ship. Always wanted to do this one, and I've been aboard her a couple of times too, as well as Connie. Spent a weekend a few years ago at the Mystic Inn, and was lucky enough to stay in the Mansion there. Bogie and McCall spent their honey moon there, and I got to go aboard the Morgan too. Good trip.

And again snow??????

Man, you've got a lot of them.

Today the temperature is rising till 20 degrees Celcius in the Netherlands this afternoon.

So no building but work in the garden…...

Yup, snow.  Sunday night through Wednesday!  No gardening here!!!!!  Instead, I'm waxing up the snow shovel --- I use the same beeswax I do for rigging.  Keeps the snow from sticking to the shovel.  I'm like Rameyke.......I want water in the high rivers.......good for the fish!!!!

I didn't know you could wax a snow shovel.  I may try that.  Yea I got all these pots on the patio with some tomatoes and green peppers.  Guess I'll have to bring them in before tonight.  I understand having snow in the higher elevations but I'm sick of the cold.  It needs to warm up already.

I think we've already gone over the options for groundhog... my next plan would be to simply whack him over the head with a shovel and bury him in his hole... seems like alot less effort... but equally as gratifying... ^_^

To further the nautical flair we aught to keel haul the ground hog and or hang him from the yard arm at very least a good lashing,

In North America (specifically Canada and USA) February 2nd is known as "Grounghog Day"

A groundhog, or woodchuck is a large-ish rodent, lives in a hole in the ground. Now according to some old-time folk lore about the weather, if the groundhog  emerges from his hole on the morning of Feb 2 and see's his shadow, it means there's still 6 more weeks of winter. If he fails to see his shadow it means there will be an early spring.

There are 3 particularly famous prognosticating groundhogs. Shubenacadie Sam (In Nova Scotia, Canada), Punxsutawney Phil, in Pennsylvania, and the infamous albino groundhog Wiarton Willie, in Ontario.

2 out of the 3 predicted and early spring... hence the general animosity towards groundhogs...

Although in the case of my grandfather, he's lost a couple of horses due to groundhog holes (this is going back to the 50s and 60s when he still used horses for farming).. so there's a kind of a "North Korea" situation between him and the miserable rodents.
