hi all

decided to bite the bullet and have a go at hms triton cross section as a first attempt at true plank on frame, rather than go all out on a full hull.

downloaded the keel and keelson drawing ........and wood has been cut...sawdust has been produced!!

permission to come aboard and embark on the next stage!

i have chosen to do the majority of the construction in pyrennian boxwood, deck planking in holly and external planking in pear (wales)  and boxwood. i may throw in a couple of other species apple and sycamore for other fittings.

Hello Mick,

I am glad to see that you are willing to come aboard and take a crack at the HMS Triton. I too wanted to try my hands at a POF model and the Triton seemed to fill the criterias I was looking for. She will be a fun build and I look forward to seeing you progress along.

Cheers, Ray

Thanks Pete.

First job is to band saw and then process some box to the frame thickness. But that will have to wait until next week. Back on shift Saturday...boo hoo!

hi all

just a quick update on progress so far.

false  keel attached with paper tarring.

components are over length at the moment.

first couple of pics show keel assembly.

ive included some pics of tools used.primarily a crown miniature cutting gauge used to deliniate the upper and lower edges of the rebate.the blade is then turned to use as a scraper, after centering the point on the rebate , and the rebate is then cut.the blade is not quite the right shape so finished the cut with a 2nd cut triangular file.

boxwood stash i shall be using for this build. i have also just aquired a nice supply of english holly. i brought it from a chap who was using it to restore a riva aqaumarina. it was a very modest price but VERY rough sawn. a local timber shop planned it all down to 8mm thickness. i shall use some of this as decking on the cross section model. also slowly but surely collecting a supply of pear wood.

Hi Pete

Something of a magpie when it comes to wood especially model making timbers.pear wood is a right price in england esp if its processed to a specific thickness.cheaper if you buy rough sawn boards but then you have to process it to thickness. The one thing I do need and will have to buy is a drum thicknesses.I'm looking at something called a hog from a Californian co. Cheaper than a Byrne's and $65 to import.this may be the way to go.

Hi Mick- great start! I'm assuming the third thru sixth photo are the tool you used to scrape out your rabbet? Looks very crisp! Good luck with the rest of the build... I'll be watching! -Chad

Hi chad

Thanks but I had a change of plan. Trying to thickness this pyrenean boxwood by hand has proved very unsatisfactory. I have therefore restarted the build in pearwood.will post some photos later.

Hi Pete

Used the same technique as I did for the boxwood keel. I have a miniature version of a carpenters cutting gauge.use this to delineate the upper and lower edges of the rebate.these lines then act as a groove for the point of a 1\2inch butt chisel and I carefully remove the waste in a roughly triangular section. I then turn the cutting iron to act as a scrapper or scratch stock. The profile of the blade is not quite correct but it will establish a uniform depth, via the drawings. The groove is then finished of with a triangular file.seems to have worked both times!!!

Ah... the sawdust is flying.  :)   Rough is ok.  Just make sure that your cuts are outside the lines to allow some meat for fairing.

Are you planning on using a jig to set the frames? It is not a requirement but a lot of people have found them useful in the past.

Hi joss

Yes I will be making a jig,but wanted to get the frames done first.I think itwill be a requirement in order to ensure squareness to the keel and to achieve symmetry about the vertical axis.

Hi Daniel

Thanks for the advice. I think there should be enough meat for the fairing.we shall see . if not looks like I will be makingsome new frames!! This is a learning curve so well see how we go!
