Counting the four forward guns on the forecastle deck, there are 26 perimeter deck guns. Then there are 10 more guns to be mounted on the bulkheads of the Qtr deck, half deck, and forecastle. I'm thinking these would be smaller cannon and carriages.

Went netsurfing and was amazed to find so many variations. I kinda landed on this one to use as my model for creating these smaller units....

I agree about the wheels Nenad. I'm thinking more about the carriage configuration.... Using solid wheels.

Perhaps this would be a better choice...l

Is he term "truck" actually referring to tha carriage wheels?

Wasa has those "land-type" carriages, Dave.  I'm not sure if the wheels are solid or spoked as the models all seem use a solid disk... At the scale of the kits, it could be easier.  The carriages are closer to what you show in post 338.

Thanks Mark. I'm thinking these carriages will allow a little more space for rigging. That's a lot of artillery to try to fit into the deck areas.

Carriage progress.... adding the wheels (trucks?)

Since beginning the new special build of Chuck's cutter "Cheerful", my progress on the SOS will be cut back to about three hours each morning. The three evening hours will be devoted to the new project.

I will begin a new build log for that project.

Here's where I am on cannon carriages as of this morning....

Much to do to each unit yet, but must first get them "ready to roll"....

I managed to take a shot at creating a smaller cannon carriage to be mounted on deck at the bulkhead ports....

I will not show you the three other attempts I didn't care for.

Another issue, as a consequence of using very poor plan sheets, and bashing the flat surfaced bulkheads shown in the plans in order to create the radius shapes seen on most other models.....

The forward gun ports of the waist deck are so close to the forecastle bulkhead, the cannon carriage completely blocks the doorways on each side.

post-11777-0-41214200-1442329992_thumb.jpg

I considered my options at this point, and concluded this is something I will have to live with considering the only way to correct the issue would be to rip out and re-space every one of the ten gun ports on that deck. NOT GOING TO HAPPEN!

My bad....

I reckon Nenad could be onto something here. Or you could have those two ports closed and have the guns in those positions lashed off to the sides.

I'm also thinking of making a big sign to hang on the inside of the two blocked doors.... "NO EXIT"

Problem solved.

That could just work, Dave. Although, I'd suggest also removing the door-knobs.

  • 3 weeks later...

Putting the Cutter Cheerful aside yesterday, turned to the SOS to work on finishing the deck gratings and companion ways.

First, after handling the Cheerful for the last month, I was immediately struck by the sheer difference in size and weight. By comparison, this thing is beginning to be quite heavy.

So I managed to build out the gratings, replacing the oversized 3cm gratings with 2cm gratings.

These beautiful one/piece plastic gratings come in 1-1/2" x 4" panels and very easy to cut to size.

Forecastle companion way.... Note, the color of the deck planks in the previous photos appear more of an orange tent due to the early morning light on my patio. This shot of the forecastle is much closer to the true color of all decks.

Note that I have also finished tree nailing all deck plankings.

G'day Dave

Did you say plastic gratings? I've never have guessed.  They look so woodish. Can't wait for your next post.

I really hate to see this project gathering dust while I concentrate 100% of my shop time to the Cheerful build.

Hi Dave

I agree with you, but the Cheerful cause is worthwhile and like you, I'm also keen to see the Doc's reaction when you present it to him.

Then, it'll be back to the SOS build, for sure.

Cheers

Patrick

  • 4 weeks later...

Back to work after three months of complete focus on the Cutter "Pillsbury", along with the little decoy ship.

Spent the morning putting away all the rigging tools material (rope, blocks, dead eyes, etc.).... clearing my work area and bringing the SOS back to the table.

First impression..... "Man, this is a big model!"

Second impression.... "Where do I begin?"

At this point, I'm a little intimidated by the realization that there is so much more to do with this build yet.

Slowwwwwww down boy.  Lonnnnnnng way to go.

SLOW START.....

After cleariing up the shop and bringing the SOS back to the table, I am beginning with dusting off some of the casting molds I created for some of the carvings used on the port side.  The big round one on the right was poured to create a thin sheet of plastic I will be using to create many of the fancy scrull work carvings.

post-11777-0-27772800-1449498091_thumb.jpg

Realizing I will be needing quite a few new fancy scroll carvings, I went to the internet and found a virtual gold mine of clip art.

Why try to freehand the scroll carvings with this material available.... right?

There are many more.... amazing!

First new carvings....

The fancy scroll wreath around the "CR" is my first carving in over three months.  Used one of the clip art pics posted above for the wreath.

Photo's show before and after painting.... (my photography skills still pretty poor).
