  1. Moving on; first planking done more or less, filling and shaping in progress.
  2. Dave, the beauty of wood is it's natural variation. Painting would be a taking away the character you have achieved with the planking. IMHO.
  3. This is really going to be an exciting build to watch. I'm pulling up a chair as well...
  4. If you wish to replicate realism - fine. If you wish to build a kit out of the box - fine. If you wish to modify a kit - fine. If you wish to make up an imaginary vessel - fine. If you wish to enter a competition - fine. If you wish to build from scratch - fine. If you wish to build a historical model - fine. Basically I for one build for myself to the best of my ability and do not try for museum or jewel quality. Don't be afraid to follow any path you decide on. It's a hobby with many aspects that are different for each person and that is just fine. Now back to a fresh cup of coffee.
  5. Elijah, your are doing a very nice job. As others have said take you time, this is not a race, and enjoy your accomplishments.
  6. Hi, congratulations on the completion of your first build. The first takes the longest as you have to build your skills and get used to the order of construction. Yes, start another and see how much better the build goes. For the most part instructions are generally vague. The instructions from US companies are usually better. For instance you can go on line to model Expo and check out the models and at the end of the detail description the are tabs for documentation. they sometimes have the instructions posted, so check it out. Can you post pictures of your Flying Fish? Mark
  7. Pat, go to ModelFlags.com you'll be able to get all the info you need and you can order cloth flags printed on both sides to the correct scale of your model. I have no affiliation to them other than being a customer. Mark
  8. Beautiful job. Did you make the brass bulwark or are they some kind of upgrade. Mark
  9. Hi Peter, welcome to the Cutty Club...I'm going to sit in and watch your build with interest. I'm in the first stages of my CS build a few planks at a time.
  10. Hello HOF and S. Coleman, Thanks for all the advice and the warning about that block. I'll mark it on the plans so not to forget. I have some small upgrades at hand for the CS, turned brass stanchions rather then the stamped brass ones supplied, etc. I'll be using the Campbell plans for reference as well as Longridge but aside from small upgrades I won't be bashing the kit any further. The fit of the bulkheads was pretty good some adjustment was needed but nothing out of the ordinary. About the vise, I have not seen any warping to date and don't expect to as I've used it on most of my builds without incident. I plank one strike at a time to each side and plank the deck. I do the deck planking sooner then the instruction say (after the second planking) to add strength to the kit overall. I will come back and finish the outer edges after the second planking which gives the bulwarks some added thickness and then remove the tops of the bulkheads. I will be removing the model from the vise to continue the planking. Thanks for sitting in and thanks for the good words. Mark
  11. Hi Clare, The Hacchoro, to my surprise, showed up early. Ordered on 12/11 was told that it may be mid-January delivery, it was delivered 12/26. It just sailed through customs. I've gone through the kit, very nice system of coordinating plans and parts, everything looks to be in fine order. Really nice to have this one on the shelf. Mark
