I think I would go with the "correct" length for the yard Boyd. Just in case you change your mind about going the rest of the way up with the rigging. In the end, it's your decision.

Your doing an awesome job on her Patrick. And all works of art start out rough. It's all part of the process.

I'd add that the Byrnes uses a precisely ground, solid aluminum cylinder for a drum, along with a perfectly aligned, 3/8" thick aluminum plate for a table.

Still in the last stages of the same thing myself. Trading in or just generally getting rid of all my large tools for bench-top ones that I can use in this apartment.

She's definitely an outstanding build Mike, and I hope they give it the appreciation, and you, the recognition this generous gesture deserves.

That's a neat way to improvise Jack. Using the Gesso in place of using primer. Reminds me to get over to my artist supply store (Blick's) for more supplies. Nice job on the carving by the way. Yes - get that bird some legs and eye-balls.

Interesting stuff Marc. Never would have guessed some bolt-ropes were served and others not, but it does make sense.

Sorry but I'd be a little leery about letting some guy that doesn't have all his digits, teach me about tools that can cut the ones I have off.

You can cut really nice veneers with a bandsaw Mike, and a Rikon 10-305 like mine, with a "Woodslicer" blade, will work just fine. They're $300, not on sale, and this time of year, if you shop around, could be considerably cheaper. As an extra, they also come with a 5-year warranty.
-
I see your dilemma Mike, as that Proxxon Bandsaw probably won't be big enough to squeeze 2" material through. There are some nice 10" Bandsaws out there, and right now, around Christmas, is a good time to shop around for them. A bandsaw will be handy for slicing sheets as well, with the right blade.

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
