  1. A good rule of thumb in this hobby is to never be impatient. While one piece is drying start on another project. David B
  2. Nicely done Steve, your rudder looks great and your hinges look good as well. As for blackening the motto is clenliness is next to godliness. David B
  3. I might have to get a German to English dictionary. The first thing I did was cut out and fold the bottom hull. Once the spine was cut out I added a reinforcing strip to make it a little stiffer. The spine was then glued to the bottom hull. David B
  4. Nigel, It depends on the paint. I have used this method with pear, and apple as well as several hardwoods. Once the piece has been brought to the right thickness I would give it a coat of sealer. Once dry I would spray it on usinf either a rattle can or my airbrush. Since the paint would be half dry by contact I never had any problem with bleeding. But you are correct that experimenting is the best way to do it. David B
  5. What I did on my Latham for the lower deadeyes which are pretty much the same size was use 1/32X1/64 brass from K&S. After running the strip through some 400 grit wet and dry sandpaper to clean it and make it a little thinner I annealed it. As for the deadeyes I used a third hand in a vice to hold it then proceeded to wrap the brass around it. I then soldered together and flattened the ends. After a few tries a lot of bad word I was able to do a decent job. Since most of the actual bracket will be hidden I think this will work out for you. David B
  6. Like I said before Nigel. A great Idea. However at the smaller scales I have found that taking a piece of wood that is the same thickness as the width of the plank and giving it a light coat of paint will do nicely as well. Once the paint dries you just slice off the planks and apply them in the same matter. Since I am a firm beliver in scraping a slight irregularity in the plank hight does not bother me. David B
  7. When I was going for my cell extraction I remember meeting many poor souls and it made me want to weep. A couple at the hospital whose 8th old son was diagnosed with leukemia and had maybe 6 months left. A woman staying at the Hope Lodge who has been battling a form of cancer that literally dissolves the bones and tissue. My heart goes out to them and I wish I could help them. David B
  8. Well done Daniel. Makes me think about trying it. The only problem is I do not drink. Plus with the stuff I am taking right now it would probably send me to the moon. David B
  9. Tell me about it. But I have a choice pay the deductable or the full amount. The butchers bill for one month in the isolation ward is more than my yearly salary when I was working. That does not include the meds test, etc! I will make a plan to pay the deductable Keith, my sister has a friend with Lyme Disease and said he went to a specialist in South Dakota and it has been in remission ever since. Have either of you heard about this clinic or is my sister mistaken? David B
  10. Michael, a lift gate is used on trucks to remove heavy loads from the truck to the ground and visa versa. Basically it is a platform that uses hydraulics to raise and lower itself. Many cube vans use them. Saves the back from unwanted stress. David B
  11. Well after 3 kits I think I am up to the challenge. The Maine was commissioned in 1895. She was sent to Cuba during their revolt against Spain to protect US interests. Despite being out of date when built the Mainh was considered an advance in American naval design. In 1898 the Maine suffered an explosion which killed most of the crew. At the time the explosion was used as an excuse for the US to enter the conflict. Now it is believed that dust from the coal bunkers caused a flash explosion. The first thing I did was look over the plans and the instructions. David B
  12. My battery died before I could get a shot of the bow. It reminded me of a U.P.S trailer, every square inch was utilized. You could not get your finger in between any of it. David B
  13. Good luck. It seems you have a handle on a rather over priced kit. Keep up the good work. David B
  14. I was thinking maybe a round of golf, a snifter of fine cognac, and some good music. David B
  15. Not really some modelers will cut the hull down the centerline then shape each seperately before putting it back together. David B
  16. Well done. Kick back and take it easy for a couple of days. David B
