double planking glue
dgbot replied to leroy's topic in Building, Framing, Planking and plating a ships hull and deck
The problem with gorilla glue is it foams up and makes a mess. Titebond or Elmers is better. Less messy and easier cleanup. David B -
Who is the maker of the kit this might help explain what is happening. David B

If you have an airbrush go ahead and use it. Once you tape and mask everything the actual painting will be done in less than 1/2 the time. David B

Nenad, in doing miniatures I have seen modelers use paper to simulate many things depending on the papers thickness. Including plating, and several metal parts. It seems like a good idea. It cannot hurt to experiment a little. David B

Thanks for the advice Chris. I looked into the laser set but it is unavailable. Thanks for looking in Dan. This model is a great learning experience. And as Chris has stated it has a few wrinkles that I have to watch out for. David B

The basic hull is starting to become more rigid so I cannot manhandle it. The biggest trouble I have now is making sure everything is cut properly. David B

The next piece I worked on was the Aufbauwand hinten. In place of photo etched parts extra panels were added to give a 3d effect. So the first thing I did was cutout these pieces and glued them to the main piece. Then came the fun part of gluing it to the deck. This took some time. Once more the old saying less is more came into play for the glue. Just a light touch gave me all the tack I needed. Plus no overage and weakening of the part. So far so good. David B

Keep it up Bob. I have read Chappelle's book many times. As far as I am concerned that is the place to go for schooners. David B

San Salvador by warship - CARD
dgbot replied to warship's topic in - Kit build logs for subjects built from 1501 - 1750
Tony, I downloaded this awhile back. Now I am able to see what it looks like. From what I have seen you are doing a bang up job. I have just started the Maine in card. The good thing is if you make a mistake you can redo it. Not to many times though unless you like to buy ink alot. Keep up the good work. David B -
I have used contact cement at work for along time. It can be messy if you are not careful. On large pieces we would thing it out so we could get even coverage. Once the surfaces were dry we would thin put the two pieces together and clamp it down to insure the cement was in contact. That is one of the things people forget. Either running a roller or burnishing to achieve full adhesion. Plus the stuff gets thick very fast. David B

Looking good Steve. As for the pitting. I was told that brass is an alloy. And depending on the supplier you might get different ratios. Once in a whille I have bought brass that will pit a little. You are doing a fine job. David B

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
