Now that you mention it, yes, why are the bulkhead tops already cut off? Aren't you supposed to to do that until much later?

Nice! Another thread to follow! I'm building her myself right now. Have fun! And thanks for mentioning the Baltimore clipper. That looks like a fine model to build as well. I'll keep her in mind.

Great! This one is also waiting for me on the shelf! I visited the ship last year in France ( as well as the Hermione). And as soon as I have finished the Lady Nelson I will take on this one. So it's nice to have at least 2 other examples to learn from. Have fun and enjoy!

Thanks for sharing, Simon! And keep up the good work. I'm following your build, cause I've just started building her myself, after (almost) completing the Swift 1805. She seems so small after my first build.

Hi Dave. How is it going with the Lady? It's going to be my next build and your log will help me a lot. So, please, sail on! Cheers! Dutchman @Jaxboat; do you mean "super-detailing the cutter Sherbourne, by Gearge Bandurack"? It's a cutter very similar to the Lady Nelson. I bought it directly from the author and got it signed as well. Wonderful book!

Admirable! But, are you going to build a case for every model you're going to make? I might consider doing it for my ultimate goal; the HMS Surptise (from Jotika/Caldercraft if/when they release it. Or else from AL). But the others are going to collect dust, I'm afraid.

Oh, lucky you! Wish I had a teacher somewhere near, who could show me some tricks. Oh well. I Guess I have to make do with the tips on the back of the cereals box.

Well, I have to admit, that was during summer holiday. Now that I'm back to work, building speed has dropped considerably. I just meant to say, keep going and it will work out fine. (I prefer single malt whisky myself, but that doesn't have the jack tar's ring to it)

Take it easy. I mean literally easy! One step at a time. If I've learned one thing, it's patience. When planking the hull on the Swift (my first), I often did 2 planks a day (later on some more), sighed, gazed and wondered how the **** I was going to get it done! Then read articles and forum posts again and went on trying. When I had finally finished the first planking. I was proud I had done it after all. But one look at the model made me realize that, in water, it would sink within a second. Then I discoverd woodfiller and the sun started shining through the dark clouds. After filling and sanding I had a smooth, looking good hull for second planking. So life was worth living after all. Just endure, keep on sailing, learn and enjoy. (and don't drink to much rum!)

Yes! Don't give up on us/me now! I'm following your progress eagerly, cause this will be my next build (have to finish my Swift 1805 first) and I think I can learn a lot by following your log. So; sail on! (please) edit; photo's will really help us to see what the problem is. So give us a look, please. (If nothing else, we will at least be able to sympathise)

Great! Looking forward to see the outcome! I'm going to start on the rigging myself. Already seeing some illogical ways of attaching a halliards in the manual/riggingplan (through the mast!!!), so I'm looking for another way of doing that. Keep up the good work!

Really, Doc, you set a level quite unreachable for me! Still, I find you're work (and help occasionally) very admirable and inspiring! Love it! Cheers!, Bouke

Very nice book! Very useful and also a bit af a collectors item I'm going to use it building the Lady Nelson, which is a kind of similar cutter. I first have to finish the Swift 1805, though.

I was wondering though, when I looked at the earier pictures , I saw the first planking done only half a side (from the middle to the stern/stem). Why was that? Weren't the planks long enough? Or is there another reason? Why not use 1 plank over the whole side (as I did on the Swift)?

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
