Mike, just catching up on your build. I really like the realism-first approach built into your processes. Great stuff, will watch for the 'ta-da!' moment when you declare it finished.

Title = ' The ship-builders assistant : or, some essays towards compleating the art of marine architecture Sutherland, William, (1711)' This document is incomplete but does include a chapter entitled 'Of Beauty'. I was hooked immediately. There are guides to acceptable styles of imagery used on stairs, rails and figureheads. I did not realise there were industry standards for decorating newels on stairs! It is not a downloadable PDF but can be viewed page-by-page up to the point where (apparantly) the record is corrupted. The link below should take you to the opening of the 'Of Beauty' chapter but don't ignore the earlier pages. https://echo.mpiwg-berlin.mpg.de/ECHOdocuView?url=/permanent/library/AE4UUGBR/pageimg&viewMode=image&pn=93&mode=imagepath

Test first. From experience, some dry transfer products react with some spray coverings. It will be an easy test because, again from experience, the effect is immediate. So just rub down a letter on some scrap and spray it, you will know pretty much straight away if you have one of the uncommon mis-matches. I must emphasise, most products will not cause a problem but it is possible, so test.

Some Master's Theses on Figureheads, Naval Clothing and Hammocks
bruce d replied to trippwj's topic in Nautical/Naval History
Thank you, Wayne, three good finds. A quick skim through the thesis on hammocks unearthed something new on just about every page, will give it proper attention later.- 16 replies

Well done, Sjors. That is a good looking model. I believe I will go back to the beginning and read the whole log.

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
