Actually nowadays they are painted matt black by colreg regulation.

The reason is that it shouldn't reflect the colour of the light at all, simply because the light would then be visible from unwanted angles (in case of sidelight that would be from angles too much astern).

That said, I believe that only came into use in 1970 or later, so for Lula I guess it's really up to you.

In any case this thread is great to follow, so much detail on such a small model. She really looks the part!

     Thank you, Roel.

The 1972 Convention was designed to update and replace the Collision Regulations of 1960 which were adopted at the same time as the 1960 SOLAS Convention.

Annex I - Positioning and technical details of lights and shapes

    5. Screens for sidelights

The sidelights of vessels of 20 m or more in length shall be fitted with inboard screens painted matt black, and meeting the requirements of section 9 of this annex. On vessels of less than 20 m in length the sidelights, if necessary to meet the requirements of section 9 of this annex, shall be fitted with inboard matt black screens. With a combined lantern, using a single vertical filament and a very narrow division between the green and red sections, external screens need not be fitted.

This use of white light boards, however, does make some sense and so I shall follow your logic with the light boards on TWILIGHT when I get to mounting them. Thanks again for the thorough research on all aspects of your model(s).

Craig, you better nix the thought of white light boards. Sorry to have lead you and anyone else astray.

Thanks for those quotes. Mark.  Traditionally, of course, the light boxes were painted red and green, and now they are usually painted black.

John, thank you for questioning the light boards color. I also went with white light boards because of Lula's owners decision, with the exception of the black trim, to paint everything that didn't move white.

Well, one learns something everyday...I have sailed with many black and natural finished light boards, but not white. Perhaps they were finished thus to avoid excessive glare from light scatter when on deck.  (I note that it doesn't seem to help in fog or rain.) This use of white light boards, however, does make some sense and so I shall follow your logic with the light boards on TWILIGHT when I get to mounting them. Thanks again for the thorough research on all aspects of your model(s).

Thank you, Craig. I try to be accurate when building but sometimes I fail and that bothers me. Hopefully I'll continue to learn and each new project will be more accurate than the last.

Wait a minute!  I thought a ship in bottle with penguins was next on your list!?!?  And I know just the guy that can carve you some awesome penguins.  Check out what @gsdpic did.  See post #18.

And your Lula is really coming together nicely.  Wonderful work, Keith!

Thank you, Glen. I'll leave SIB work to your capable hands and as far as penguins go........I'm back on the patch. :)

Nice Keith- i take a couple of days away for the steam gala at Keighley and she has sprang forwards leaps and bounds

Thank you, Keith. I've managed to get some extra work time in on Lula lately.

Looking good, Keith. Are you going to leave those sidelight boxes white?

Thank you, John. Yes, I'm leaving the light boards white because white paint reflects better according to Google AI.

"Red light will appear brighter when reflected off white paint because white paint reflects all colors of light, including red, while red paint only reflects red light"

"Red paint contains pigments that selectively reflect red light and absorb other colors. When red light shines on red paint, the red paint reflects the red light back, but the amount of reflected light is less than that of white paint, as it doesn't reflect all wavelengths of light"

"Green light will appear brighter when reflected off white paint because white paint reflects all wavelengths of light, including green, while green paint only reflects green light and absorbs others"

"Since white paint reflects all colors, including green, it will appear brighter when illuminated with green light compared to green paint, which only reflects green light"

I've seen light boards left natural when hung in the shrouds, painted red and green, painted black, dark gray, and silver. But because of the above I went with white.

You sound like certain members of my family if you replace "boiler deck" with "floor"...

    Everything looks great!

Thank you, Eric. Too funny regarding space, "things" can go from horizontal to vertical if one doesn't keep them in check. Ask me how I know. :)

Every summer our RC boat club puts up a table pondside at a local fair and runs boats around. People come over to see the models all lined up on a long table and are really interested. Well, I guess only those interested would come over HaHa. Last year I took my Roman galley (didn't have it one the water, too windy) nonetheless people were fascinated to see the oars rowing. It was great talking to them and showing how they worked.

Ian, that sounds like so much fun. Unfortunately I'm not close to a modeling club and with the exception of my wife and sisters no one in my immediate circle gives two hoots. Thank God for MSW as it's my only resource for sharing and learning and that's perfectly fine.

Lula is looking good, especially with the pile driver along.

Weren't you thinking of a diorama?

    Thanks for posting.

Thank you, mcb. I'd love to build a diorama with Lula and the pile driver in the mix but once Lula is finished I have to get back on the Tennessee and finish her. She's the one that brought me to the dance and she deserves to be finished. Once the Tennessee is done then I'd love to start on a diorama.

Thank you for the comments, likes and support.

The boiler deck is finished and glued down. I added the light boards and flashing for the boiler stack. I went back and forth between painting the trim black or white. I finally decided on white because if the need arose to touchup any paint around the stairways black would have been a nightmare.

I have the stairways temporarily in place to shown the relationship to the boiler deck and also the amount of space allowed by placing the dinghy on the main deck. I was going to stow the dinghy on the boiler deck but it would be such a hassle to get it lowered to the main deck.  There's a little space on the boiler deck for something, maybe a paint locker directly in front of the pilothouse below window level? It could also house coal oil and lantern wicks, etc.

I still haven't gotten to weathering the main deck. Wood keeps jumping in front of me saying, cut me!

Lula is really staring to get busy. The pilothouse and railings is just about the end of the line.

Yes, Keith. I was back at the museum on Monday, but I got hardly any work done. Too many visitors wanted to talk about the 'Duchess' and model making in general! 🙂

1 hour ago, Jim Lad said:

PS: That's not a complaint. The whole point of working on the model in the museum gallery is so that people can talk to me about it.

That's got to be great being able to talk to folks who are truly interested in the model and modeling in general. I bet you are the star attraction.

Might as well call it the boiler deck, following standard practice for steamboats, despite the nonsensicalness of calling the deck above the boiler, the boiler deck. Not sure if that nomenclature carried over into pseudo-marine harbor vessels like you're modeling here, but since your prototype is a riverboat, you can justify it.

    Otherwise looks great to me!

Thank you, Eric. Boiler deck it is!

  8.  Thank you to everyone for your support, it is very much appreciated.

     Test fitting the deck frame

Test fitting the deck. Because this is all so tight I need to have the frame painted and glued in before adding the deck and of course the deck will need to be painted before gluing to the frame. BC1F764E-1EA8-4567-99B4-1778C3097D78.thumb.jpeg.2536dd89d5c805bc7c9b62c35a1e055f.jpeg

Port side view of the frame.

Access to the deck will be off of the stairs, I will also have grab bars at the front edges of the pilothouse where a person could grab and swing around the pilothouse edge and land on the forward deck. I have no clue what to call the forward deck, storage deck, upper deck, forward deck??

This photo indicates that maybe there's too much of a rise (out of level) in the decks forward edge. I need to check that because once this all goes in it's there till the CA turns loose far into the future.......hopefully. :)

It kinda makes me sad that little Lula has lost her car ferry appearance but then I wasn't building a car ferry.

Thank you for being part of the journey.
