I can’t work on multiple projects in parallel or I end up with a huge number of unfinished projects. I will pause for a quick project to take a break when I have a large multi year project going and I need a small project that I can finish in a few days or a few hours. Or a few months in the case of the Prince de Neufchatel. As far as construction order goes, I try to look ahead so I don’t paint myself into a corner, so to speak.

The Fore Course is done: 6 more to go. 2 studding sails, 1 fore stay sail and 3 jib sails. Then it will be billow and install.

It is called fairing the frames. You sand a bevel on the frames so that that planking lies flat on them. There’s a great article on it here: http://modelshipworldforum.com/resources/Framing_and_Planking/plankingprojectbeginners.pdf

The carronades aren’t too bad to make. I made mine out of a dowel rod. I carved it with a #11 scalpel blade. Cut slowly and make small cuts. Watch your fingers (I learned the hard way). I made the barrel first, drilled it out, glued a seed bead on the back end for the cascabel and put an eyebolt on the breech. The hardest part was starting the first one.

Thank you very much for the comments and the likes! I’m pretty happy with the color of the sail material that I’m using. I like the darker look, it looks more real to me. As for making the seams, a sewing machine is on my wish list. I used upholstery thread for the seams this time. Next time, I will use upholstery thread for the rigging and regular thread for the seams. I finished the fore top studding sails:

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
