Kimberly, If I recall from my plastic days, dull coat come in a small spray can also. You have to do A LOT more masking but a light mist coat should work if you try that. Sam

Sjors, that looks great, very clean. Its not fair that your gun ports come pre scored Nope! No Sir! You need to spend hours laying those puppies out. Days even. I dont know if I can believe that is a clock, clocks only go to 12 then start over. Who ever heard of a 24 hour clock........? Sam

Steve, I think you will find you'll like those chisels. Especially after a good honing, they dont hold a edge like a good set of two cherries, but for $8.00 a piece you cant complain. (At least I couldnt) It got kinda wet and muddy in your neighborhood today, I saw the news copters hovering in that direction, is all well in your world? You didnt have to jump on your build and sail it away on Noah's mud slide did you? Sam

Kimberley, Something else you might try. After masking take some clear (make sure it's compatible with your paint) the dullcoat mentioned earlier should work, and lightly brush some over over the areas you are going to paint white. Make sure you get some on the mask also. Let it dry and then do your white. This will seal the edge and should allow you to get a crisp line with out bless bleeding through under your masking. The scenic artists where I work do this regularly when bleed under will be disastrous. Try it on one of your old ships you mentioned. Also I find dentil tools indispensable for rubbing tape into tight corners. Good luck and more importantly have fun. Your build looks better then you give yourself credit for. Sam

Mark, At work we have a saying - "We do it nice 'cause we do it twice!" When it comes out better the second time it all worth it. Hhhmmmm maybe that should be my signature.... what rhymes with quintuple? Sam

Sjors, I too am a bit jealous, those look like some nice tools. And chisels! There is something about the schunk! sound of a nice sharp chisel cutting through wood that helps make this hobby what it is for me. Your work bench is just WAY too clean, I think your being too hard on the gnomes. Enjoy!! Sam

Steve, Hello from a fellow So. Cal builder! I just discovered your build last night. Your walnut looks planking great. I too have a love affair with older tools. The furniture shop I worked at in the 90's (right down the road from you in Irwindale) had some great stuff including a tenoner from the 20's and an old cast iron foot operated 10hp mortiser. I will be watching and following along. You and Bindy both stay away from the fires! I was in Tujunga during the Station fore of 2008 (9?) Fascinatingly Frightening! Sam

Mark, you ca buy them through the link (I have never bought from that company, just the first thing that came up on Google) I have always found them in the paint dept. but sometimes they can be hard to find. OSH may still carry them. The build is under way, Woo Hoo! grabs an adult beverage and sits back to watch. Sam

Mark, Have you seen "Tints-All" in your local Home Depot or Lowes? They are small tubes of UTC. The HD here in Los Angeles carries it as well as The Do It Center. Dont know if Do It is in OR though. I have used these for stains, tinting clears for toning and color correction as well as tinting small amounts of paint. Would be an easy way for you to try umber if you wanted. http://www.highlandwoodworking.com/tints-all-universal-tinting-colorant-1-1-2-oz-tube.aspx Sam

Vivian, You dont play around, that is some fast building, and nice work-womanship also! In addition to what Popeye said about clear lacquer you should also be able to rub a too shiny finish down with 0000 steel wool, that will knock the shine back. You can also create that "You gotta touch it" glow with a bit of wax afterwards. Sam

Muzzlehead, I seem to recall that 20' is about the longest plank for this period. At 1:51 scale thats 119.5mm. There is an article in the Database about Excel for modelers that will teach you haw to build a scaling spreadsheet. On MSW1.0 there was also something called the scalinator. It may still be here somewhere, it only worked on a Windows machine and since I am on a MAC I really never had a chance to play with it. Sam

Rich, thank you. I noodled around with how to drill the Bowsprit also. As a rule I dont let power tools anywhere near my build; I prefer to screw things up slowly. If I recall correctly it was a couple of drill bits as well as rattail files and sand paper. I believe I used a1/8' or so drill bit, the largest that would fit in my pin vice and drilled through at the correct angle then enlarged with 3/16-7/32"(?) I think I used 3-4 bits and stopped when I was 1/32-1/16 shy of what I wanted then used a rattail file and sandpaper around a dowel to finish. I still ended up slightly off center and not 100% round. One thing I wasnt sure about was how much clearance around the Bowsprit was correct. I guessed at least a couple of scale inches as i am sure a real part would move about when under sail. Hope this helps. Sam

Looks like they have completely redone the plans. I am off to work at the moment, if I get a few minutes before the better half and I go out for the annual "Look how much I love you cause I am taking you out on the night society says I should" date, I will look for some pictures that might help. Sam

Muzzlehead, I do not know what plans came with your kit, but in the newer kit there are two sets, #1 and #2. #2 is mostly rigging, #1 has the hull and deck information on it. At the bottom approximately in the right-middle is a section view of the upper hull, If you look carefully you will see that your first plank extends slightly above the deck; about 3mm. Then inboard of that is a second plank sitting directly on the waterway. That 6mm tall plank will end 3 mm above the first. You will alternately plank inboard then outboard till you reach the proper height. The last plank, inboard will be trimmed to the correct height, in your case it appears to be 3 mm. On the new kit the difference was 2mm. Let me know if this helps, if not I will tr to dig up some pictures of my build at that stage. I wont be till saturday at the earliest, i have a busy couple of days coming up. Sam

If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
