  1. I didn't say I was going to listen to the Admiral ---- but I am tempted Yes Sjors, the figurehead will be painted. The current gray color might look ok if I slapped him on the bow of an Aegis cruiser.....not so good on 1700's frigate
  2. I promised you a side by side photo of the after market items I ordered from Chuck. Well, they're HERE! I think they are terrific but you can judge for yourselves. First, the cannons. There are 2 sizes: I'm sure you can appreciate the difference between the brass guns (and trunions) and the cast brittania metal. They look so good I'm already getting comments from the Admiral that I should forget the 20 coats of paint (thanks BEN) and leave them as is !!!! Then we have the figurehead: Again, just much finer all around. The bottom line ---- well worth the investment. I'm a happy puppy :)
  3. Ship looks great. Good time to take a break and keep her in your mind's eye. Bon Voyage ----- and BEST OF LUCK with the interview.
  4. Fastest cutter of her day?????? I keep thinking back to the post you made way back that had either a drawing or painting of her sail plan. I'm surprised that they could keep her IN the water given a fresh breeze. I thought that post was still here but I'm incorrect. Doesn't matter --- now we have the real model to visualize her beauty and power. Always a true delight.
  5. Holy smokes....you're in warp drive! Just one thing on that archive pen. I don't know what kind of finish you're planning but test it on a sample 'caulked' plank to make sure nothing strange happens. I think my memory is telling me I've screwed something like this up. Yup --- old plans, templates and spare wood.......the modeler's treasure chest :D
  6. You sailors behave over there. On second thought, I know that won't be possible. Have a great time together
  7. You might also try 'overbending' it very slightly and carefully. Then when it springs back it hopefully settles in the 'straight' configuration.
  8. Good catch. You may need to repeat the process if the parts try to return to the original shape.
  9. STEP AWAY FROM THE BUILD ---- with your hands in the air. Normally, at times when you feel like this, it's necessary to take a break. But you just had a break. The problem is you're probably not ready to settle back into the building routine. My guess is that you have a million things on your mind and your normal 'escape' to the shop isn't working. It's acting like the one millionth and ONE thing. Give it a break for now and get those other things reduced to routine rather than crisis status. You will then look forward to returning to her. I've been in the same place.......I'm sure many of us have. Take a deep breath, relax and then whip that other 'stuff' into submission. Your gal, and your friends here on MSW will be patient.
  10. Good advice there from Dirk. You're on the learning curve.......in fact we ALL always are. Remember where you started and, when you're finished you will be much surprised at how good she'll look. Yes, there will be the inevitable 'woulda, shoulda, coulda's' ----- but that's called 'experience'. I don't believe anyone here on MSW can step up and say "I have built the all-time perfect model, without exception". If they could, they would probably no longer be building. Enjoy the journey. It's more important than the destination.
  11. Welcome aboard, Rich. Very nice looking Pilot boat. You'll have quite a project with Constitution! Looks like a nice kit. As you mentioned, stay a few steps mentally ahead of her. As for tools, you eventually accumulate what you need. Great to have you on MSW. There is plenty of expertise on here so don't be afraid to ask questions. The great folks on here got me through my first POB ship (Syren). We learn from one another. Have a great voyage!
  12. Yes, acetone will clean out the tips but it does take a while.
  13. Thanks Mobbsie. I try to keep us on course. But the journey wouldn't be so much fun without the diversions. Oh, that 1/16th" rabbet strip on a 1:64 means an adjustment of 4" full scale.. I'm fine with that but Patrick better keep it in mind for his Constitution. I'd hate to have him clip his mainmast going under a bridge . More glue, Igor. There's a LOT of bulkheads here!
  14. And ------ you're off! I'm glad it's you Bob. You can handle any small bumps in the road.
  15. I mirror everything Wayne said. Plus --- glad to hear the deck has evened out to your satisfaction.
  16. Sacre bleu! Your wife chose 'Café des Legumes' !!!! Glad you survived. If you can't find a decent meal in Firenze, I give up. Sounds like you're enjoying the trip. Stay safe and well. We all miss you
  17. Claire is correct. The aft stack leans forward in the first picture, leans backward in the second photo and is straight in the 3rd.
  18. John- yes, 'poof', a ship ! This part is easy---it's like framing an airplane. The real work is down the road, as you well know. Jax -- thanks for the opinion on the temporary safety timbers. Knowing me, they will probably be worth the time.
