thanks CDW........the rope would be used to help me climb out of the hole.........I already have a dog that goes bananas every time he sees a squirrel .....you should have seen him when he saw his first raccoon ❕ I have so many projects.........MAN.......I wish retirement would come soon........I'm busting at the seams! I have one project { a what if} that I've already traced out the hull parts, but haven't had the courage to cut them out! if I do.........I'm doomed! I really am crazy at heart, don'tcha know thanks Sam........I've made a little more progress. I've got the hull somewhat into shape.......still more to do. I think once I get the railings back on, I'll feel a little bit better about it. for now though, I'll use it as an experiment in PE I'll see what I've got........

there are some kits {ships} that you'll need to cut the bulwark posts off after planking. I read ahead in the instructions a bit so I get an idea of what will need to be done. for these models, I don't cement the planking to the posts, rather just glue the planking together and hope that the cement doesn't get on the posts. it makes the step a lot less stressful you must be referring to painting the inner bulwarks........sure do that and then plank the deck.......does the deck platform have a printed deck pattern? if so, varnishing over it would look nice, but some sealers will loosen the printed ink. planking over a printed platform merely gives the deck more detail.......it does look better {so far, we haven't seen much of the deck area}. it's good to map out where the structures are to go and plank around them, giving them a 'well' to sit in when cemented in place. this will hide those pesky gaps that sometimes occur when mating the structure to the deck surface. I like that color green! I have a can of it too you clearly have a good idea of where your going with paint......and that a good thing. coming up with a paint scheme for the project ahead of time is always a good thing.......you can't go wrong. where you might still see the filler can be ignored and painted over........after a good proper smoothing, of course your doing a super job so far Jo........kindle the humor........it's your best defense it's good to be able to laugh at mistakes.......bad temper doesn't get you anywhere.

yes....that does look a whole lot better what color do the pictures show the winch? hate to see it in black.....it will lose some detail. .....and even if it shows a little bit of roughness........well, you should see some of the winches in other boats. I tend to favor the off color greens and blues......I'm working on the Progress's winch at the moment. usually Billing's sells them entirely made of metal, but since then they have changes some of the parts over to wood. it's a bit delicate to work on, but I think I can pull off a nice one the metal yours is made of is terrible.......you can get something nice, or you can get one that came from the shredder {the lead stuff was the worst!} .

the winch looks a little rough........ Carl has some good links there, but take a browse in some of the ship sites....Billing's, Model Expo, or Ages of sail. they might have something that resembles the ones used......do you have any pictures of the winches to go by?

..and a happy Father's day to you! {belated}.....that looks like an older kit Billing's kit of the Wasa. having built one of these older kits {of the Nordkap}, and getting a second chance to built the Progress......I think you'll find a lot of enjoyment out of the experience. you'll also have better control over the inconsistencies with the kit, since a lot of the build will be scratch built what is the kit in the upper left........looks like a 1:150 kit.......another Alabama? nice work on the masts

nice looking bollards......how many do you have to make? your paint issue looks like over spray settling on fresh paint. I usually wipe 'em down lightly with a soft cloth, since there is another coat of paint to go over it {if there is another coat}. really nice progress

checking in on your progress Yves.........very impressive indeed! so glad to hear that you had a good outcome, looking for the parts you needed. I think that after this, Trumpeter should make them an accessory kit that can be purchased for this model. the deck is looking very good as well.......the PE and your efforts are really paying off! super job!

awesome video! interested in seeing what your going to do with the build -
check to see if the oval fits where it's supposed to go........that might give you something to work with.

if I recall, there is a coupler for the front........there is foil that is shaped across the front. the gentleman who was building it had misshapen-ed it a little, so I had to flatten it out again. there are also two blades on the sides that have arms on them. I had a bugger of a time finding good decals for it too. here are a couple pictures of what it looks like... neither one used the foil.........the first one appears "planked", and the second one looks like it was shaped with putty or filler and painted. I really like the color.......it a good railway color. I've seen lots of cars painted in this shade of red / brown. I was thinking of doing a log here on it, but the pictures are mostly blurry.....likely attributes to my early days of documentation {then I got a better camera}. I'm not sure who produced the one on the left, but the K-10 is an Ambroid kit. it's not finished yet.......still grab handles and rails to go on, as well as the plow wings.

hey there John........it's not too big just yet. basically, I'm assembling the frame of the winch so I can drill the holes for the shafts. also shown are the parts to make the gallows.....I have four to make. I'm going to copy the metal ones that I got with the first Nordkap. I also scoffed the degausing cables from the hood PE, to use as electrical conduit for lights. just a little bit of extra detail......the structure is far from being done. more soon.........:)

thanks for the kind comments.......good to know that I haven't scared anyone off before I go further, I just want to mention an observation I made, while working on the General. I had painted the parts of the drive train with battle ship gray, and I couldn't help but notice, that the photos reflected the gray with a bluish tint. the paint I was using has battleship gray in it. I'm thinking of scraping that paint and continuing with the B. gray. of course I'll test it first. gotta fix the waterline.......short of trying to strip the entire hull, I guess it would be the better of two evils. I began to see what of the Hood PE I can use.......railings and hatches seem the safest. I had removed some of the casements between the 11 and 5 inch AA guns on the first level. the open areas I will dub in sections of railings......I hope to do more as I work with the upper levels. first off though, I need to get the hull in order and do the railings there, so I'll know how much I have to work with. really wouldn't be beneficial to throw more money at this model. here is what I've done so far........it might be hard to see. I got the rest of the open areas done........I did notice one that I had messed up on. I have removed it and will be re[placing it. as I get more done......I will surely post it thanks again for hang'in there......the rabbit hole is very deep. you would thing that with all the rigging thread I have, I'd have enough rope

I got the underbrush for the snow plow diorama the train itself is not finished........when I got the poor thing, it looked like this I had to buy the trucks and couplers for it separately. the date is incorrect.......I've had this since 2010........started to work on it in January of 2011. it has been short sessions after that. the diorama came into the picture in 2015. it was by luck that I remembered that I even had the underbrush stuff. the one thing I came away with, working on this HO scale model, is I could see how interesting the early scratch built train must have been. these are some pretty cool kits.......don't let it fool you.......there's scratch building built in. I'll get back to it one day

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
