  1. this week didn't pan out the way I wanted it to. way too much in and out. I did get around to painting the gallows winch frame. there were some holes along the sides of the motor box.....unused since I change the configuration. I cut a couple rectangle pieces of brass sheet {they are small}, dimpled them with a rounded dental bit {to simulate the bolts}, and glued them over the holes. it was painted to match the boom winch, a dark gray. I still need to touch up the boom winch....maybe add a few more small parts, but I thought to put it in place on the deck to see how it would look. there is plenty of room........I put a control box at the rear of the motor box......I can see that I'll need to add some buttons, perhaps a lever or two. The gallows winch will be belt driven. I've set the pulleys for the reels.....the crank pulley, you've already seen. the block pulleys have been painted as well....I made seven of them to insure that I have enough. I may need to make a pair of double pulleys......I'm thinking that they may need to be made vertical, rather than horizontal. I'll have to see. I started to make the conveyors for the receiving bins.........you saw the beginnings of it earlier. sides were made for the template........an outer frame piece was added to the sides, and smaller dowels were added down the center. the smaller dowels will support the belt as it wraps around the end dowels of the template.......it's level with the end dowels. it was at this time I decided to do a dry fit, and I found that I forgot to make the adjusted ones {which are shorter} and it is too long. I'll finish it anyway............it will be my proto type the belt is the sail cloth painted flat black here I go again........I gotta head out I will be back
  2. if those silly thing are visible Pat........I sure as hell can't see them I wouldn't count yourself short either.......that is one magnificent ship you've built. I'm still work'in my way towards finishing ships like the Endeavour.........I've got two {actually three} active in my project roster. I'm planning one of them to be next, but I still have two more fishing vessels I can do, should I chicken out. I will try and snap a picture of the helm room, of the Nordkap....they can be seen through the windows pretty well. too bad the build log was lost in the initial site crash......I'd still love to build another one.....to be laser cut would be a real treat!
  3. glad to see you back Andy! that's quite a list of changes you plan to make.....you'll be guaranteed to build a vessel worthy of you talents. look'in forward in seeing more progress on this fine build. I don't blame you for taking the time out............it's will reinforce your creative juices ! just don't get 'em on the ship
  4. thanks to everyone for your kind comments and who hit the like button I got pulled away yesterday to do a few things to our car...inspect and see what I'd need for some upcoming exhaust work, plug and repair a tire, and took off one of the rear tires, dismounting and mounting another tire on it. I did it by hand, something I used to do when I was young and living at home on the farm. of course, it was easier then......we had the tool for it....a bead breaker. I did do a little though.........I should have pictures up for it soon I forgot to acknowledge a post you made earlier John........I do apologize. it pleases me to have such accomplished modelers, like yourself, looking in on my build.......there's some hope for me yet thanks Pat........that must have been a funny sight to see. I did a comical thing to the Nordkap......there is a picture of Popeye and Olive dancing and a picture of Poopdeck Pappy hanging in the helm room. I did it as a joke for Tom, when I was sending build logs to Billing USA. it still can be seen on the Billing USA website......a condensed build log done by Tom. Roger @ Ages of Sail was kind enough to keep the site up and running. I have been adding extra detail and bashing ever since that very first model...looking back on it, I smile seeing how primitive I was. I'm constantly learning from folks here on the site........though I hope to aspire to the level of those I'm learning from, I just as happy doing what I'm doing and maintaining that 'this can't be it' attitude hello Piet.........thanks for the good word! glad to hear you got through the hurricane alright.......it could have been a heck of a lot worse. I'm hoping you can find the time to get back into some modeling again.........I miss seeing your work are you sure you want to do that Patrick?.........your Shadow..........might become the 'dark Shadow' thanks for the good word my friend.......it's all relative to scale......or is it?!?!? the models you build take lots of planning and fitting........the level of detail you add is amazing. we are learning from each other, I think...........and quite pleased to do so
  5. good to see your back........any amount of progress is a welcome sight well done on the fore deck.......did you cut all of the other structure pieces too?
  6. super looking ship torbogdan...the added detail will make it more interesting
  7. she's a beautiful ship Pat. you've added so much into her.........it's a safe bet, you're within sight of the finish line
  8. I had better get crack'in on the gallows winch. I finished drilling the holes for the reels and put the file to the other metal winch frame. these parts were given a coat of paint. {the engine and tranny are for another project......just pick'in at it for the moment } for the other idea I have, I made a template and cut four strips of rough sail cloth....the notorious stuff that was included in the Gothenborg kit.....1 inch and 1/2 inch respectively. the mock up will look like this......the two frames sits sideways with the motor in the middle. there was a small drum sticking out the front, but in removing it, it got damaged........so I ended up tossing it out. further thought indicated that it needed a base to sit on, so I made up a quick wooden frame for the assembly to sit on. I probably should have repainted the assembly, but decided to fit the reels in, to get a better sense of what to add to it. I decided that belt driven would be the way to go. I made this drive pulley for the motor. I had made these for the boom winch.........the drum caps for the lower pulleys were cemented in place. more progress soon
  9. hello Nils...........some really neat ideas, but I'm not sure how much detail I'm willing to get into. I had it in my mind to finish some of these projects I have open, foregoing some of the ideas I already had for them. this one doesn't seem to want to cooperate though.......ideas are still finding their way into the mix I do agree that it would be a nice touch.......I'll refer it to the deck prop department thanks for the suggestion and the good word
  10. I found this site while building the Titanic http://titanic-model.com/paint/ there are articles that discuss the white star buff
  11. your not wasting any time Bob............the paint on the Pequot barely had time to dry I hope there's a seat available........love to see what you do to these two little gems
  12. I like your boats too Mike.........I've done a few things with the kit supplied boats...even the plastic ones who says you can't make gold out of lead?!?! the fire bucket and rack sounds like a good idea
  13. ......ohhhhh......what the heck was that?!?!? the earth moved!?!?!? nawwwww, it was just Jerry! so good to see your getting back! take it easy though.....do just that......come back slow welcome back!
  14. another work week out of the way........I was checking to make sure I did the logs on these past few updates. finding that I did, and am all caught up, I transferred them to my file in the memory stick, and I thought you might like to see the difference in the design of the fish box. the box itself looked kinda choked......the receiving bins would not have been able to do their job. with the modification, the bins are opened more and conceivably, can accept a net full of fish. the second idea that I have will further automate the box, in how the catch is moved from the receiving bins, to the sort area.....and then, into the hold. that will be a little bonus, I'll throw in for fun
  15. I have one of those helping hands too...........that's a really good idea! good you will be able to save the ladder it might have been tough to try and make another matching one
  16. awesome looking ship tozbekler.....really like all the scratch built and P.E. stuff..............very well done!
  17. pretty neat........different phases of operation a great definition of the level of detail, with as the degree of detail. very good work Nenad!
  18. I do the same............I use them over and over. I have two sizes....7 mm, which I use a pin pusher to insert them, and 10 mm, which has a better defined head to them. I don't use them for planking {there isn't a pin pusher for them}, but they can be used for rivet detail, levers for fishing boats winches and dash boards.......and yes......the all helpful locator pin. I also stick one in the bottom of the mast, for when your setting the rake....put mast in hole, set the vertical and rake, and press in place. the pin will mark the placement hole......not too hard to find afterwards.
