  1. There are many books on ship modelling that can help. If (as I suspect) you are new to all this, you may want to start with something simpler. To get some idea of planking methods, look at 'pinned' articles on the subject right here on this site, at the top of this list 'Building, framing, planking, etc.'.
  2. Until recently my garage was European sized, Carl. There is one other possible way out: Houdini fashion. It helped that I have some Hungarian genes and am reasonably slim. But we've now moved and it is much easier! That hull is looking very nice, Michael. It's going to be very elegant.
  3. The 'small stuff' always takes the longest to make.... Nicely done, Keith.
  4. One can never, ever have too many clamps.
  5. Such unusual and effective techniques, Gary. The results look very convincing.
  6. Surgical cleanliness is need to keep airbrushes in good working order. The advice above is excellent.
  7. Silly question: is that tool mounted correctly relative to the direction the stock is turning? Is it rubbing rather than cutting?
  8. If you can obtain holly and Castello, they are superior to your other options for model open boat work.
  9. Walnut, as you already know, has a pretty coarse grain structure. Lovely as this is for furniture, I would not recommend its use for small open boats. Cherry or maple would be more suitable.
  10. Ah, the memories! Overwound elastic band-driven propellors in Keil Kraft balsa model aircraft. One reason I switched to boats and ships early in life!
  11. That's the good thing about poor castings - no waste! Back into the melting pot they go. That is a graphic demonstration of the use of talc, BTW. I think that the stiffer Hydrostone mix would probably be OK. I usually dry my casts in a warming oven. That drives off the moisture more quickly than simple air-drying. Make sure that it is only just warm, not hot!
  12. I suspect that an expert builder like Michael will use fillers, Dan.
  13. If tapping on a lathe, surely turning by hand and not under power!
  14. Actually, miniature left-hand taps and dies are available - if you are prepared to pay the price!
  15. I think that you have done a fine job there, Kortes!
  16. Love the 'same angle' photos of the ship and comparison to the model, Dan.
  17. Interesting and tricky technique! Thank you for sharing this, Kortes.
  18. Great come-back, Carl! Thank you. But, we digress....
