  1. If the smoke is from cigarettes, it should be soluble in water. Dampened cotton buds will work.
  2. My objection to French polish using shellac is its sensitivity to moisture. We've all seen rings left on beautiful table surfaces by condensation from a cold drink!
  3. Frank, I'm disappointed that you didn't imitate the prototype's 'splices' with black electrical tape! Seriously, that is beautiful work.
  4. That last one took a moment to sink in, so to speak, Peveka!
  5. Wot about Hallux Varum, then? What happened to her? Was she the captain's Achilles' heel?
  6. Nice, but isn't the captain a little down at heel?
  7. There are always parts on eBay, including chucks. Just search under 'Proxxon DB250'.
  8. Pumice on a paint or varnish finish 'breaks' the surface and dulls it to a satin sheen. Following this with rottenstone will give a somewhat higher sheen. If painting the wales of my models (rather than staining) I use both compounds. I take a piece of felt, wet it, then pick up the powder on it and rub the surface with a circular motion. A damp paper towel removes residual powder and burnishes the finish.
  9. Thank you, Dick. The last two images are very educational; much appreciated.
  10. Once hung, any small wobble along a paint edge will be hardly noticeable, especially if you artfully drape the flag! Your only difficulty now is to have a ship to place underneath the flag....
  11. At one time Longridge's Victory in the Science Museum was displayed in a dry dock setting.
  12. Coming along nicely, Dan. That's a lot of clutter on top! It must have been frustrating to deal with that one item crossing over the centerline. That's as neat a solution as any that you decided on.
  13. Surely a pair of pumps would be more practical? This silliness has to stop soon....
  14. Alignment looks great, even under magnification, Pat. Well done!
  15. Pre-planning is always worth the time spent on it. She is looking very nice indeed, Eric.
  16. Despite your not being happy with this model, it is very nice and cleanly done, Dan. Looking forward to your next model!
  17. What about simply referring to this as a Transitional rig?
  18. If you are relying on any glue holding wood in place without pre-bending it to shape first (except, perhaps CA), you will be disappointed. See the planking tutorials at the top of this section for more information.
  19. I agree with pear, although holly bends very well also.
  20. Whoops - a bark she is. A brig she was. Thank you for the correction. Frolick!
