  1. Matt,

I'm finding the same discrepancies on my own Connie build. For me, they became more of a problem as I had always aimed to do a Captain's gallery and 1812 stern arrangement. My solution was to re-cut the parts, ignoring the bevelled section on the upper side of the two extreme outer frame pieces.

If you look at XKen's build log on pg3 (post #41), you will see that he had the same issue. His solution would probably be more suited to your build.

Keep up the great work ... you are steaming ahead !!

  2. MILITARY SCALE FIGURES

A number of modellers here on MSW show remarkable skills when it comes to sculpting small details to be added to their ships. The following list is by no means exhaustive, but just a few of the amazing sculptors I have seen are:
    - NM Brooks
    - Sawdust Dave
    - Piet

… or, indeed, anyone who has modelled the Wasa, Sovereign of the Seas or any other heavily-ornamented ship.

Not to take anything away from the fine work done by these gentlemen, but not everybody (me !!) possesses their level of sculpting talent.

For the rest of us, the following idea may prove useful. Seen here, RSchissler shows how he has taken a pack of plastic figurines and trimmed them to create his knechten figureheads. These figures can be purchased in a variety of scale sizes, so choosing a size to suit your own build is very easy.

With Randy’s permission, I have lifted these photos from his Golden Hind build log. His steps should be self-explanatory:

  3. Not sure if this is an idea you'd consider entertaining, Dick, but what about partly-furled ?? This was an option I chose when doing my Launch build. My reasoning being that it showed off the sails, but also displayed a sense of action onboard, whilst also highlighting the rigging. It would be entirely up to you as to how much of the sail is raised/furled.
