  1. Hi Adam. Just found your build. This ship looks very interesting. It's cool you are going to rename it after your wife. I've got a pre-owned & very poorly started Mayflower that I am bashing & will rename it after my wife (if I can ever get back to it). Look forward to following along!
  2. Hi Piet. Just catching up with your build here. Looking very good! Great detail. Making blankets on the bunk beds is a nice touch & those cleats are some great metal work!
  3. You have to be careful. Most of the time CA glue is disaster for cloth. It makes it too hard & brittle & cracks apart but if you use it carefully like with the holes it is very helpful. The reason for using gel is so it wont soak up into the cloth any farther than the rim of the hole. Then you don't have any of the normal problems with it.
  4. Those foredooms are great. I used one when I was a bench jeweler. Used to take my model ship parts to work to dill/grind/sand them then take them home to add to the build. The only mistake I ever made was not to buy one for myself back then. What was I thinking?!?!
  5. Thank you all for the kind words of encouragement Things are moving along a little better now. Made the holes in the sails for the mast rings. Rolled the tip of a steel pick in gel CA. When you punch the hole the glue seals the edge of the hole similar to how heat would seal nylon. Makes clean neat holes. Started attaching sails to spars anywhere I could because it is more difficult for me to add them after the spars are added to the masts. Adapted some parrel sets I found from 3 line to 2 line parrels. Began adding gaffs with sails to the masts, attaching mast rings & working on the rigging in these areas.
  6. Got the ratlines done. This ship was a smaller vessel so there were fewer ratlines. Found I had a broken yard truss so I glued another piece of wood on & reshaped it. A little paint touch up & it's good as new.
  7. I've heard others say it worked for them but mine didn't at all. I wonder if my solution is too old. It does still work on steel.
  8. I like paper too. I have no tools or material for metal working & using card stock has always worked well for me. I wish I had thought of using steel instead of brass. I found out the hard way that the gun bluing does not work well with brass.
  9. I use a bulletin board pin to make the center mark. Indent it in just enough to get a small twist drill started.
  10. Ugghh!!!!!!!!! I have pulled my hair out trying to salvage tangled messes like that. It usually ends up in the trash after I decide its not worth the stress.
  11. .Just came across your build. The cross planking is something new to me too. Looking very good!
  12. Still experimenting with the shaping of the sails. Finished the ratlines on the Foremast. Got pattern set for the Mainmast.
  13. Began tying the ratlines today. Most people say this step is a test of patience. I have the patience. My problem is with lyme disease the way you have to sit, lean & reach to do this is very painful. It reduced me to tears & back to my sick chair well cushioned with pillows 3 times today so this is as far as I got.
  14. In the past I always made my sails look as if they were catching a full wind. Thinking I'll do them a little less than that this time. Been looking at pictures of sails under lighter winds & how they are shaped. Using watered down white glue to shape the sail. Not sure if I'm satisfied with this first attempt or not....
  15. This was my first ship build when I was a teenager after years of building model cars. I'm pulling up a chair for this one. It brings back old memories to see it again!
  16. FINALLY got all the sail stitching, reef bands & points & bolt ropes done. Now I can start putting them on the yards & get to the next step that will take me forever- the ratlines.
  17. Absolutely incredible! I keep looking back at it & asking is this really built from card? You are very talented! Good luck on the new job!
  18. Decided to add one last detail. Wanted whoever ends up owning this to know what it is so I hand painted it on a strip of wood to go on the stand. It just about drove me crazy as I kept messing up & had to go back over it many times. Finally ended up looking like I wanted it to.
