Great kit and parts source
mtaylor replied to JohnU's topic in REVIEWS: Model Shipwrighting Tools, Parts and fittings
Sorry for your loss, Rick. Losing friends is tough and sometimes grief does make us lash out at others. Give it some time to heal and remember the good times with them. -

Good choice, Nenad. Days like that seem to be rare but worth the effort go out and enjoy them.- 4,152 replies

Great kit and parts source
mtaylor replied to JohnU's topic in REVIEWS: Model Shipwrighting Tools, Parts and fittings
We have one hobby shop here where I am other than Hobby Lobby. It's been around a long time and expanded a bit for bicycles. Mostly, it's aircraft, RC cars/trucks and trains. They do have a small selection of plastic ships, cars, planes, etc. an surprisingly they do carry wooden ships.. mostly AL in stock and not many. On the bright side, they'll order any kit you want. I do support them for things like ply, tools, etc. when I can. -
1:8 1965 Shelby Cobra 427 S/C - Agora Models
mtaylor replied to James H's topic in Non-ship/categorised builds
Just curious, James on the shoulder harness. I take it the instructions don't show the shoulder harness connected to the lap belts? If I remember right, they were on all the cars of the period. It's still a beautiful build. -

Welcome to MSW, Johan. For a first model, pick on without sails. You might start by reading this topic... -
Byrnes Table Saw Tips (requested)
mtaylor replied to Matrim's topic in Modeling tools and Workshop Equipment
What Bob said would work well. I use a piece of double sided tape that's bigger than the insert so it's uniform all around. -

Welcome to MSW, David. If you'll go here this sub forum https://modelshipworld.com/forum/133-kit-build-logs-for-subjects-built-from-1501-1750/ and use the search function, you'll get hits on the logs. You will probably need to do two searches, one for Wasa and the other for Vasa. Those logs will give you a good idea of what's involved as well as the strengths and weaknesses of the kits. In the past, the Billings kit was considered the most accurate but I've heard that kit mentioned above is excellent as the Billings kit instructions were, shall we say, a bit sparse. And from what I've heard, the quality of the Billings fittings aren't the best anymore. As for tools.... for a kit, basic hand tools. Here's like to the data base where they are discussed: https://thenrg.org/resource/articles

Have you tried the drop of thin CA on the line to get it through the hole? I find that works very well.

Another route would be black paper such as construction paper. Not really archival but it does work. Use a good glue like PVA. To prevent fading of the paper, paint the band black.

Dave, Write up a post with the issues, your hardware, and software. Then post it here.... https://modelshipworld.com/forum/47-how-to-use-the-msw-forum/ It might get some IT eyeballs on the problem. I'm old IT but more hardware than software.... so I'm not able to help.

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
