3D drawings 18pdr at 1/64 scale
mtaylor replied to Barbossa's topic in CAD and 3D Modelling/Drafting Plans with Software
Christian, That might be a problem but how critical it is would be up to you. The French guns were different in dimensions and not by much. There wouldn't have been a ring on the cascabel ball either. The biggest issue I can see would be are the locations of the reinforcing rings and the length of the chase. -
Proud owner of a Dremmel drill stand
mtaylor replied to DaveBaxt's topic in Modeling tools and Workshop Equipment
Is your Dremel stand metal or plastic? Check for wobble by mounting the Dremel and see if it moves with a bit pressure. Some of these are not the sturdiest. -
There's quite a few different models of those out there. Some oscillate side to side and other in and out. It has it's uses for small parts not large one. Also, best bet it is to check out various models and prices. Prices and quality range wildly.

Quality building jig
mtaylor replied to PAnderson's topic in Building, Framing, Planking and plating a ships hull and deck
I had the Billings Jig many moons ago. I only used it for one build and there were some drawbacks. The biggest one is the long slotted piece for the keel and both end pieces. They weren't adjustable. One had to slip in pieces of wood in the slots to secure the parts. As I recall, it was basswood and was a bit on the fragile side. I currently use jigs of my own making when I need them. Then, if something isn't right, I can only blame myself and also save a pile of money. -
From where I sit, a question... is the wood from the kit good? If so, just cut outside the line a bit (not on the line) and then sand, file to shape. If the wood is damaged, copy it using a copy machine or one of the printers that has a scan/copy function. You may have to fiddle a bit with the setting to get the exact size you need. Once printed, these can be put onto a new slab of wood using rubber cement.

There is a caveat to these lists.... the wood market has changed radically. Many sites no longer handle certain woods. If you find one overseas, getting it imported your country many not be possible. For example, I can locate milled boxwood in Europe but can't import it to the States. On the hand, I can buy billets of unmilled wood here.

Go up to the top of any page. Hover you pointer over "More". A dropdown will come up and one of the choices is "Planking Tutorials". Check them out, one of them may be exactly what you're looking for.

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
