Hi everyone Well, Shadow's journey has been going slowly lately due to our house being painted. However, I've managed to work on her a little; so much so, that I've fashioned her three radar domes and antenna mast which are located on the top of the Sun Deck. At the rear of the main deck, I've added the twin staircases which lead from the deck above to the rear diving platform at the transom. Still bucket loads of work, painting, puttying, etc, etc, etc (you know the drill )... BTW, everything's still loosely placed in their respective locations; that's why they look a tad wonky! All the best! Cheers Patrick

Hi Nils I can definitely see what you mean about the roughness of the cut that the auger leaves. I guess that wouldn't be a problem as it won't be seen once the funnels are installed? Thanks Patrick

Hey Denis I'm most upset that I've missed the beginning of this build! Nonetheless, problem solved - I just pushed my way in and am dangling from the roof beams. I can still see, albeit a bit far away, though. I'm looking forward to seeing you pull this one together! Cheers Patrick

Hi Ken Ok. The brass work I can accept as skilfully and masterfully crafted. But...that domed glass (epoxy) on the compass is like the icing on the cake. I'm learning heaps, Ken; learning heaps... ... !!!! Cheers Patrick

Hi Charlie Well done. Interestingly, the carronnade on the deck, when compared to the silver crew member, gives a good indication of just how big they were. It's certainly larger than I thought. Nice job so far, overall. Cheers Patrick

Thanks Laurence! There's still plenty more to add, but it should look pretty spiffy when she's ready for launching

Hi Frank Happy New Year to you, too! Thanks for your compliments about Shadow. Hopefully 2017 will bring us all lots of time to devote to family, friends and of course, our boats! All the best Cheers Patrick

Ah, Brian, sorry, I totally missed that. You gotta give us a heads up when you start your yacht, though. I'll be first in line! Cheers Patrick

Hi Gary Thanks for looking in and for your comments. Greatly appreciated. Yep-you're right. At this scale, the thickness of materials is an issue, so I'm using a combination of wood, styrene and card in order to make the accommodation as realistic as possible. All the best! Cheers Patrick

Hi Carl - Ahh, yeah. '3D Jigsaw' is something I hadn't thought of, but now that you mention it, that's a very apt analogy. I like it! Thanks Hi Brian - Thanks for your compliments about Shadow. You're right, though. She's a bit of a challenge. But that's the best part of it, I guess. Hi Bob - very appreciative of your comments, especially about Majellan. One day, I must get around to actually posting the completed photos of Majellan in the Gallery section. One day, one day... Hi Greg Many thanks. I agree with you. It's a nice feeling to get back to the workbench. I was beginning to get a little twitchy not being able to work on the boat. Happy days now ! Have a great 2017 everyone. Cheers Patrick

HI Rob Damn! That stand is magnificent! Talk about the 'perfect match' - i.e., natural and rough hewn timber skilfully married to a beautifully crafted piece of maritime history. Lovely work. Cheers Patrick

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
