  1. First, thanks for taking a peek at my first build log. I have decided to put my MS Kate Cory on hold. I originally bought the Kate Cory kit in December of 1992. Since this kit is over 20 years old it doesn't really compare to the modern laser cut kits with great instruction manuals. It also helps that there are so many builders of the modern kits to get help from. I have just gotten started on it but I can see it will be a real pleasure to build. The parts are amazing compared to the crude wooden blocks and pieces for the old kit. I chose the Bounty Launch as a first planked project because of all the wonderful build here on MSW. Please feel free to nudge me in the right direction if I get off track. Only one picture so far. I only removed a few parts from the sheets and started to clean up the char marks on the edges. It is not heavily burned like some pictures I have seen. Looking forward to a fun build, Al D.
  2. Congratulations on all fronts. Have fun with the build. Al D.
  3. Ken, I see your point about figures. They would have to be perfect to work well. You don't want to spoil your beautiful work with a zombie invasion.
  4. No pressure. Just enjoy the build. I have a couple of these in my drawer to learn the process. I want to translate the skill into building whaleboats for my Kate Cory and future C.W. Morgan projects.
  5. Looking good so far. I can't wait to see this take shape.
  6. Thanks Ed, I will do that. I assume it's ok to save a PDF of these files to my hard drive as well as print them to add to the book? It's great to have the author here to ask questions of. I really appreciate that. Thanks again, Al D.
  7. Hi Ed, Based on this thread I just ordered both books from Sea Watch Books. Will I get all the latest changes in these books? Should I go back and get all the additions posted in this thread? Thanks for what promises to be great reading and a future project. Al D.
  8. Ken, You can get resin or plastic military figures in 1:48. They are pretty easy to modify with hand tools and modelers putty. You can also probably find some Napolianic era figures that may work well.
  9. Ken, Your AVS looks great. I love the sails. You can see why these were such fast ships. Since you have sails do you plan to have a crew standing watch? 3 or 4 would be all you need to show scale and some life aboard. Al D.
  10. Ryland, Thanks for the tip on the #11 saw blade. I just ordered a couple along with a few other small items. Looks like a super useful tool.
  11. Bob, It was around 19 on the way to work this morning. No moisture though. It's bone dry.
  12. Bob, Your Constitution looks great. I can't wait to see more progress. I am new to wood ship modeling and have a question. What do you use to glue parts to a painted surface? Is there any special prep or certain glue to use? Thanks, Al D.
  13. First wooden build? WOW Very impressive work my friend. How do you take on such a project as a first? I wouldn't have the nerve. I guess you just do it.
  14. Your off to a nice start but I would't count on a page of instructions a day though. As you get into it you will slow right down as the building gets more complex. Look and see how long some of the build logs run for with expierenced builders. Good luck and have fun.
  15. Fantastic attention to detail and workmanship. Thanks for taking the time to post a build log.
  16. Your whaleboat looks fantastic. The colors are perfect and in you last set of pictures it looks like it is sitting dockside waiting to be loaded onto the ship. I have this kit in the closet but have been afraid to start it without enough experience under my belt. I look forward to seeing the equipment being built. Your project is an inspiration.
  17. Sport, Your build looks great. Thanks for sharing it with us. These build logs are great learning tools.
  18. Your off to a great start. This kit will be my retirement present to myself in a couple of years. Thanks for posting the build log for all of us to learn from.
  19. Mike, Your ship looks great. I had to make templates from the plans too for my Kate Cory but the hull came out pretty nice. Those pilot schooners have great lines. I see you are from MA. Go Bruins.
  20. Dan, Thanks for taking the time to put all this information and photos in your build log. I have one of these little boats in my stash but don't feel I'm ready to build it just yet. Yours is looking darn nice and you are gaining some good expierience in the proccess. Al
  21. Richard, Your workmanship and attention to detail is amazing. Thanks for the great build log. Al
