The Kaiser Wilhelm is a really big ship, i would never intend to build that in 1:50 measure. My nonmarried wife would send me far far away with that. Highest length I can build is the DANZIG, she will have around 1,90 meters over all, including all masts. But if I had space eough, I could try..............just dreamin`

I`m just waiting to see more of your build, and will read this report from page 1 to the latest, I need more time!

Nils, please excuse me for hijacking your thread but I have some news regarding the Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse that I would like to share here. The wreck of the ship was rediscovered in 2013 off the Dakhla peninsular of Morocco by amateur divers. Video footage shows part of the Name "... Wilhelm der Grosse" clearly visible at the bow. At the end of April a congress will be held in Dakhla in which issues such as preserving the wreck and bringing public attention to its existence will be discussed. I have been invited to take part in the congress, you can find details about it here:

Perhaps some folks here might like to join in.

When I looked at that video taken by divers off the Dakhla peninsula I was amazed that the name lettering was still so well visable appr. 102 years under the ocean surface. Would highly appreciate any updates on this if you should be able to get some in due time....

I`m thinking about how to build those cargo winches with twin steam cylinders drive.  (two of six winches in total go onto the forecastle deck), looking for toothwheels to suit the scale....

Old watches, Video recorders and other things are very useful sources for small parts. I almost "collect" those things just to get everything out of them.

 

Had a good look at the photo you mentioned, this is a monster! But I like this big ships.

Update

 

I`m still waiting for mini toothwheels to arrive, in order to build the cargo winches in brass, as good as possible to scale.

In the meantime I`m checking with the lifeboats.  A raw  protptype was already made (as shown in an earlier pos of this thread). Probably I will make resin cast boats after that prototype in series production. For weather protection I made a "cavas" cover out of wood, that will be fitted on the sample boat when making the silicone mold. Around the sheerline there will b a strong fender rope

 

A few weeks ago I found a boat (in scale 1:144) from a british model web shop which is a good alternative for using, but that`s a rather expensive solution to go. Also compared with the scale figures that boat seems to be a wee bit to small, although my first made prototype is only 1mm longer and 0,5 mm wider, I think it looks more seaworthy....

I will let the impressions work on my mind to find the best solution

both figures are 1:144, the male of course is slightly taller, that`s natural...

This is the first built prototype to suit the figures in scale, it looks a more rough water resistant boat

 

 

 

the clinkering is a bit wider, but I wanted it to be seen afterwards, when the boats are in their davits

Hi Nils, The prototype looks good, the wider strakes do stand out more than on the pre-cast lifeboat. I am sure whatever you choose will be Amazing

Yes, your prototype does look good.  Narrower planks may be better for scale but they may just disappear when looking at it on the model.  Eye appeal seems a better choice in this case.  Sometimes scale get's in the way in our efforts to replicate the real thing too much.  I like the way you think.

yes, for the scale there has to be a sacrifice in detail and a compromise in optic now and then (if one is not a profi builder), I see this with the intended winch toothwheels, that I thought could be arranged functional, but have to give up this now for exactly that reason.....  The  two steam cylinders per winch cross-head driven cam rods are creating the same problems.... It worked out on the 1:96 "Heinrich Kayser steamship" winches, but that was fiddely enough.

Build log part 31

( starting /making the winches, scale 1:144)

 

the winches will basicly be made of brass, the body framework is from stock 12 x 12 x1 mm squaretube. I have given up the idea of using real mini-toothwheels, and will use discs resembling the different toothwheel diameters instead.

On the slow spool shaft there will be the winding-line  drum the brake drum and two spool cones outside the frame. The fast shaft will bear two spool cones as well.

The drive will be by two steam cylinders and crosshead, with crankshaft connection to the wheels outside on the "crankshaft"

Hello Nils,

 

I just watched all the 44 pages because I had forgotten your build een little. It's very impressive what you make, a real work of art. For the lifeboat I would go for your own prototype. Self-made is always better IMHO The canvas can be more realistic. I used thin led in the pas te make a canvas cover. The led wich is arround an expensive bottle of wine. You can also use aluminumefoil or even Milliput to shape a natural cover.

As always, amazing work on the winch. Hard to believe that you can get all that details in with your scale! Just super mate.

Regarding the life boats, I think the strakes are a bit too wide, if you make them, say 2mm, (it would be about 290mm in acual size) it could be a fair comprise for visial respect.
