San Felipe by newbuilder101 (Sherry) – Scale 1:96

Recommended Posts

Sherry absolutely beautiful work on fitting together those stem pieces, Shows what one can do with simple tools. The jewelers saw is one of my favorites and it is really just a smaller version of the coping saw.

The older scroll saw looks like a gem.

I'm not sure why scratch building is referred to as the dark side. However since you are here use the force.....

Sherry,

It doesn't look that dark to me ... you shed some light on this! Show 'em girl!

Anja - Thank-you for your kind comments, they are appreciated! :)

Andy - Thanks for the good wishes!
With the 'foundation' I'm trying to be as careful and accurate as I can at the start so I don't run into trouble later...hopefully.
That scary looking scroll saw is terrific. The other saw was the scary one! ;)  :D

Mark - Thanks for the good wishes as well!
You are right - new isn't better in this case.
IF I had scratchbuilt a ship before I would have known the enormity of the task at hand and probably wouldn't have started! This way...ignorance is bliss. :)

Frank - Thank-you for the kind words! I like my saw too...a lot. :)

Michael - Thank-you for your generous comments! You spotted the jewelers saw in my photo. :)  I have a fretsaw as well as the coping and jewelers saws...they all are useful depending on the task. But I have to say I love my scroll saw!

Carl - Thanks! I will need all the enLIGHTenment that I can find before this build is over...I'm sure. :D

i ll be looking in too. you have a big job a head of you but thats good because it means a lot of fun.

adn the good thing with scratch building is that you dont have to worry about messing up or breakign a part as you can just make a new one as long as you have enough wood in stock :)

Hey Sherry,

I've been sneaking a peak now and then.  Sure hope your brother and daughter are doing well!!!

All I can say about your work is, - - - how sweat it is!

Take Remco's admonition at heart, "treat each part as a complete model" then you can't go wrong.  One small piece at a time.

Love your scroll saw too.  I have a Proxxon and jewelers saws as well, use them a lot for all the small stuff in my scale.

Looking forward to your progress.

Cheers,

I guess I tuned in a little late for this build. You certainly go the whole nine yards when you say scratch building. You're even milling your own wood, something I don't dare even if I had the space and the budget to get the tools...... You're off on a very promising start.

Remco

Treat each part as if it is a model on its own, you will finish more models in a day than others do in a lifetime.

Adrieke: Thanks for stopping by! You're right about scratch building parts, and hopefully I won't have to re-make too many of them!

Piet: Thank-you for the good wishes for my family...they are doing better!
Thanks for the kind words on the build as well. You're right about Remco's little adage! I always read it when I'm looking at his updates - good advice.

Sjors: Thank-you! I'm glad you like what you see!
If Anja gets a saw, you could use it too though. ;)

Remco: Thank-you for your kind words! I must confess that milling some of my own wood was out of necessity. I can't find the correct thickness of wood nearby, and ordering it would be much more expensive. We already have a workshop with the tools for the job, so it made sense to mill.
I have a suspicion that if you milled your own wood it would be perfect. :)

Popeye: Thank-you for the kind comments! Sorry your scroll saw didn't turn out to be all you expected it should be - I was just so lucky with mine.

Another small update.

This is just a dry fit again...don't want to fix anything permanently until all the bulkheads have been faired (at least partially) and the decks are cut and test-fitted.

Russ: Thank-you! When I was building my Mayflower I didn't have everything faired as I should have before starting the planking. This meant scraping and sanding between courses of planks...not easy, and lesson learned!

Michael: Thank-you as well!

Sjors:  :D Thank-you for the "few more" words. I have lots of pictures so I can remember what it looks like after I cover it up...she wouldn't be very seaworthy if I left her like this!

Carl: Thank-you! I guess it wasn't a small update after all...just not many pictures. :)

Popeye: Thank-you! I am pleased with the "framed out" version as well.

Hi Sherry,

If I understand it right it's not a static model but one where you want to go sailing with it???????

Give me a call and I'll be watching when you do that.

O no, no call, send me a post pigeon then…...

  • 3 weeks later...

Here the balsa gun blocks are in place. I also added an additional filler piece at the bow.

I've also been researching led lighting and am experimenting with placement. They are just loosely in place here until I get the main deck on and holes drilled for them. I used 3mm yellow/orange led lights and 360 Ohm carbon resistors. The light wiring is too large in diameter to fit in the brass tubing for the stern lanterns...but I think I have a great idea for that when the time comes. (stay tuned for that - later on)

You might want to look into some 3v Micro LEDs. I've used them in a few of my railroad models... they'll go almost anywehere.

Looks great so far!

I just bought the San Felipe kit from some place in Italy...I have been impatiently watching it's progress via the shipping tracking provided by DHL.

It was funny watching the kit go from Italy to Brussels then to Cincinnati..I imagine it will be here mid week...I can hardly wait!

Keep up the great work!
