Hi everyone... thanks for the likes ...

Nirvana, it is very nice to have a chance to say something about our sails : those are present at all of our sailing ship models, in the kits. Those are made of natural fabric, embroidered... this means the sails are made with the stitches on already, but the modeler has to cut them off the sheet of fabric and to make a hem or two... The modeler has to add the ropes at the sails' edges  and they are ready to go ...

Finally , I finished some drawings and I can continue with this topic without pressure :

Dear friends, I would like to present MarisStella ''intermediate level'' model : Stilac..

This type of the ship is describet at our website like this:

ŠTILAC is a ship of recent times, namely of the 19th century, is welcomed by a large number of boat builders. She is built along the east coast of the Adriatic Sea to transport a wide variety of products linking the islands to the mainland. To explain and present this simple design, between the coastal people there is “a deep rooted” expression for the construction of the ship - well done. The stern and sails were taken from Bracera, the bow by the logger. This ship can be from 12 to 20 meters long. ŠTILAC still sails today, obviously with an engine and without sails and is used for the transport of passengers and for the extraction and transport of marine sands.

The keel and the posts of this model are made of solid walnut wood, like all the elements of the deck and sides. The sails are embroidered on the cloth. The structural elements are laser cut.

Hi Zoran,

I'm currently experiencing withdrawal symptoms  similar to those I had earlier in the week when the MSW site went down! I'm having problems accessing your website - I hope this is just a temporary glitch - I really appreciate and admire your models of Adriatic sailing craft!

... or is it just my aging laptop playing up?

Cheers,

Graham

So, let me continue with this topic please. I am very sorry for letting you be waiting for such a long time...
Let's continue with Stilac ...As the beginning of this log, I would say that this is a model made for the intermediate skilled modellers. The main thing here is to master the round stern. This kind of the stern demands a special care. This is why this model is, if I may say, dedicated to it...
In the beginning there are the constituent parts of the keel and the posts ... Separated and then glued together...
After this, there is the models construction put together. The round bars, dowels, are the ''trademark'' of the MarisStella constructions... When the construction is put together and when the dowels are onto its place, the frames are to be put into right positions and the glue is to be applied with a brush to the points of the elements' connections...

When the construction is firmly connected, it is the time for the fillers blocks. The blocks at the bow and stern are the main ones and it is mandatory to set them up. After some beveling is done, the spaces between the bulkheads at the bow and stern are to be filled with blocks of some soft wood… After this, the preciously sanding is required. The preciously beveling comes with this phase of development of the model…

… Here is something very interesting for the beginners as well for the experts perfectionists!  The spaces between all of the bulkheads could be filled up with the filler blocks made of some soft wood. We use the lime tree for this purpose, it is soft to fast and easy shaping, but it is still hard enough to carry on the tension of the planking… After the spaces between the bulkheads are filled up with the filler blocks, the entire construction needs to be sanded and polished. The shape of the full should be perfectly done in this phase of model’s development… It is good to treat it with putty and to polish it, leaving no any gaps… In this way the beginners will be able to set the planking strips very easily and the experts will be able to set the planking getting the perfect shape of the hull… This method is highly recommended by MarisStella…

The planking is coming next…. The initial planking strip is the one at the level of the covering board (or at the level of the deck rail in the other words)… This strip will determine the line of the planking strips, the proper curvature of it. The Garboard strake is the second planking strip to be installed. After Garboard strake, there are some more strips next to the initial one and then follows the closing of the hull. Drop in planks are to be avoided, but it is not mistake to use them … In the end there is the hull closed completely… The freeboard is to be installed in the end of the planking process…

Thanks Ross, It is a pleasure to present the modelling techniques... This is the one I have been told to use, it is specific for the area at east Adriatic coast. The precision of making is great in this way and the planking is very easy to do... We recommend this way of making structures to the modellers from the beginning of their gaining experience, but as I mention before, the perfectionists experts do this very gladly because of the high precision...

So, the freeboard (the planking above the deck) is to be installed next. The tops of the bulkheads, the parts of the bulkheads that had the task to form the freeboard while planking, need to be cut off, removed… The inner walls of the freeboard are to be grind and polished next, the glue remains have to be removed completely… At this model the base for the deck have to be installed before placing the deck planks. There is a curvature of the deck that has to be followed when sanding the top edges of the bulkheads and the curvature is shown into the drawings (this cannot be seen here at the log)… The deck base is made of several wood pieces placed between the bulkheads’ tops. Pieces of some soft plywood are ideal for this purpose…

Hi Mr. Rick, thanks for stopping ...

These are challenging comments; I wish we had more time for developing the kits and to serve all of You with the new ones at some faster tempo...

Yes, after the deck base, the deck is coming next! But the king plank and the covering board first… So, the king plank and the covering board are laser cut elements and they need to be glued onto the deck base… Then the deck planks are to be cut and placed between these elements… The main deck goes first and the forecastle deck after it … There is the inner planking at the forecastle deck, so the stanchions are to be set onto the covering board…

Altogether, there are the photos:

After the deck and stanchions are set, the topgallant rail is the next and this model is starting to look as a Stilac… The frame for the main hatch is on its place as well …

Is the area under the foredeck left open and accessible? Or is the fordeck that I see an additional deck on top of the main deck?
